One who prays must direct his heart to the meaning of the words he utters with his lips, and he should picture as though the Divine Presence (Shechinah) were opposite him, and he should remove all the thoughts that disturb him, until his thought and intention remain pure in his prayer. And he should imagine as if he were speaking before a king of flesh and blood: he would order his words and take good care with them so as not to stumble; how much more so before the King of kings of kings, the Holy One blessed be He, who probes all thoughts. And so the pious ones and the men of deeds would do: they would seclude themselves and concentrate in their prayer, until they would reach a divesting of the physical and a strengthening of the intellectual faculty, until they would come near to the level of prophecy. And if another thought comes to him in the midst of the prayer, he should pause (fall silent) until that thought dissolves; and he must dwell on matters that humble the heart and direct it toward his Father in Heaven, and he should not dwell on matters that contain frivolity. The Rema adds: Before the prayer he should reflect on the exaltedness of God, may He be elevated, and on the lowliness of man, and he should remove all human pleasures from his heart [the Ri, beginning of the chapter 'Ein Omdin']; and it is forbidden for a person to kiss his young children in the synagogue, in order to fix in his heart that there is no love like the love of the Omnipresent, blessed be He [Binyamin Ze'ev, siman 163; and the Agudah, chapter 'Keitzad Mevarchin'].
One should not pray in a place where there is something that disrupts his concentration, nor at a time that disrupts his concentration [the Tur in the name of R. Meir of Rothenburg; the Hagahot Maimoniot, chapter 4 of the Laws of Prayer]. The Rema adds: Nowadays we are not careful about all this, since in any case we do not concentrate so much in prayer.
He should pray in a manner of supplication, like a pauper begging at the door, and softly, and in such a way that it should not appear upon him as a burden that he seeks to be rid of.
Prayer stands in place of the sacrifice (korban); therefore one must be careful that it resemble the sacrifice: in intention (kavvanah) — he should not mix into it any other thought, just as an improper thought disqualifies sacred offerings (kodashim); and standing, corresponding to the Temple service (avodah); and a fixed place, like the sacrifices, for each one had a fixed place for its slaughter and for the placing of its blood; and that nothing interpose between him and the wall, corresponding to a sacrifice, where an interposition (chatzitzah) between it and the vessel disqualifies it. And it is fitting that he have handsome garments designated for prayer, like the priestly garments, except that not every person can spend money on this; nevertheless it is good that he have trousers designated for prayer, for the sake of cleanliness.
He should not think, 'It is fitting that the Holy One blessed be He grant my request, since I concentrated in my prayer,' for, on the contrary, this brings a person's sins to remembrance (because through this they scrutinize his deeds, saying that he relies confidently on his own merits). Rather, he should think that the Holy One blessed be He will act out of His kindness, and he should say in his heart: 'Who am I, poor and lowly, coming to make a request of the King of kings of kings, the Holy One blessed be He, were it not for the abundance of His kindnesses, with which He conducts Himself toward His creatures.'
(1) 'The meaning of the words' — a person should not direct his intention toward Divine Names and mystical unifications (yichudim); rather he should pray plainly, to understand the words with concentration of the heart — unless it be one who has entered the secret of Hashem and knows how to direct his intention 'within, with the heart, and with longing, and with awe' — for if it is not so (i.e. otherwise), God forbid, he causes much damage through this. See the Magen Avraham in the name of the Zohar; and in the responsa of the Maharshal (Rash"l), siman 98, he wrote at length, and testified about the Rash that he said, after he had studied the secrets of Kabbalah, that he prays like a day-old infant. And see the Pnei Yehoshua, beginning of the chapter 'Ein Omdin,' who wrote that these intentions set out here in the Shulchan Aruch cannot be attained during the prayer itself, only beforehand; during the prayer one need only intend the plain meaning of the words — see there.
(2) 'He should pause, etc.' — And in the Sefer HaGan it is written: to nullify an evil thought during the prayer, one should say three times 'Pi Pi' [this is an acronym for Palti and Yosef, who overcame the inclination of their hearts, as is stated in Sanhedrin, folio 21b], and afterward spit three times — and not spit fully, only in a gentle manner — and the tongue should be between the lips at the moment of the spitting, and the thought will surely depart. And the Magen Avraham wrote about this that it does not seem correct to him to do this in the midst of the Shemoneh Esrei, since it would be an interruption, and who knows whether it is a proven remedy. And in the Sefer Eliyah Rabbah he brought, in the name of the Kitzur Shela"h, and this is its wording: it is a segulah for removing a stray thought that, before the prayer, one pass his right hand three times over his forehead and say each time, 'Create for me a pure heart, O God, and renew within me a steadfast spirit'; and likewise, if a stray thought comes to him in the midst of the prayer, he should pause a little, pass his right hand over his forehead, and meditate on the aforementioned verse. End of quote.
(3) 'His young children' — In the Shela"h he protests against those who bring children to the synagogue — that is, small children who have not yet reached the age of training (chinuch) — for the reason that the children play and dance in the synagogue and profane the sanctity of the synagogue, and also disturb the concentration of those praying; and furthermore, even when they grow old they will not turn away from their bad habit, in which they were reared in their childhood — to run wild and to demean the sanctity of the synagogue. But once they have reached the age of training, on the contrary, he should bring the child with him to the synagogue and teach him the ways of life: to sit with awe and reverence, and he should not let him budge from his place, and he should spur him on to answer Amen, Kaddish, and Kedushah — see there, at the end of the matters of prayer and the reading of the Torah. And see in Tanna d'Vei Eliyahu, part 1, chapter 13, the greatness of the punishment that lies upon the father who lets his son utter empty and foolish things in the synagogue.
(4) 'That disrupts' — for example, fresh beer that gives off an odor, and the like.
(5) 'At a time that disrupts' — for example, when his mind is not settled upon him because of some distress, or anger, or the strain of travel.
(6) 'Nowadays, etc.' — It is obvious that, in any case, when one wishes to stand and pray while in a state of anger or the like, he should see to remove first the thoughts that distract him, as above in se'if 1.
(7) 'We are not, etc.' — And in the Pri Megadim he wrote, in the name of the Levush: even though we do not concentrate, nevertheless whatever is possible to do, we do; therefore one should not pray in a house where there is fresh beer or honey-water (mead), and all the more so a foul smell that is somewhat musty.
(8) 'Who begs at the door, and softly' — these are a single matter, that is to say, that he should say it softly, in language of supplication, like one who begs mercy for himself. And he should take to heart that it is not in the power of any created being — angel, constellation (mazal), or star — to fulfill his request, except by His will, may He be exalted.
(9) 'Like a burden' — meaning: even though he says it in language of supplication, if he does not regard it as one should — that he needs something and is coming to request it from before the King — but rather prays merely on account of the obligation, to discharge his duty, this is not proper, and one must be very careful about this. Nevertheless, after the fact (bedieved), even if he did not say it in language of supplication, he need not go back and pray again; and see the Be'ur Halachah.
(10) 'Between him and the wall' — In the Tur it is further written, 'and between him and the ground'; and the Taz wrote: specifically three tefachim (handbreadths), but with less than three tefachim there is not even a mitzvah (i.e., no concern at all); and some forbid it even with less than three; nevertheless, according to all opinions it is permitted, on Yom Kippur, to spread dry grasses on the ground and stand upon them to pray, since they are nullified relative to the ground. It is forbidden to pray in (upon) a pool.
