If a person was reading (the Shema) and his urine began to trickle down onto his knees, he pauses (does not read) until the flow ceases, and then resumes reading. Even if it fell on his clothes and there is on them enough moisture to wet another surface in turn (which would normally be a problem), since those spots are covered by his garment, he may continue. But if the urine fell onto the ground, he must distance himself four cubits from it. The Rema adds: or the distance that will be explained further on in siman 82, or he may instead wait until it is absorbed into the ground (the Ri, chapter 2 of Berachot). And even if he tarried long enough to have finished the entire reading, he need not go back further than the place where he stopped. The Rema adds: And some say that if he tarried long enough to finish the whole reading, he goes back to the very beginning, and this is the essential ruling, as I wrote earlier in siman 65; and we measure this span of time according to the particular reader (his own pace).

(1) 'He was reading' — the same applies to (studying) words of Torah and to the Amidah prayer: he pauses until the urine finishes running out. And even if, because of this, he will have to wait a long time in the middle of the prayer — enough time to finish the whole of it — and will consequently need afterward to return to the beginning, even so, he waits.

(2) 'The water' — and even though the area below his knees is still damp from his urine, it is nevertheless permitted (to resume, once the actual flow itself has stopped).

(3) 'By his garment' — that is to say, that his outer garment did not become soiled. But if it too became soiled, then for the recitation of Shema and other matters of holiness he must go and remove his clothes, or at least cover the soiled spot with another garment. However, regarding the Amidah, where he cannot interrupt to occupy himself with this, he prays in his usual manner after the flow has stopped, since the prohibition of urine is only Rabbinic and he is already standing in prayer, they did not decree (that he must stop in such a case).

(4) 'He distances himself' — see in the Be'ur Halacha that with regard to prayer as well it is proper to be stringent and distance oneself when it fell onto the ground for him, just as one does for Shema.

(5) 'Cubits' — the correct reading of the text is: 'or he waits until it is absorbed into the ground,' along with 'the measure that will be explained further on in siman 82.' And the Magen Avraham wrote that even though it is possible that, by waiting for it to be absorbed, he will have to pause long enough to finish the entire reading and will therefore need to return to the beginning, even so, one need not be concerned about this in the case of Shema, since it is like one who is reading in the Torah (where pausing does not disqualify). But if this happened to him during the blessings of Shema, it is better that he distance himself from it and not wait for it to be absorbed into the ground. And after the fact, if he did pause during the blessings of Shema long enough to finish all of it, he does not return to the beginning, as (explained) earlier in siman 65 in the Mishnah Berurah.

(6) 'And this is the essential ruling' — see earlier, in siman 65, in the Mishnah Berurah and in the Be'ur Halacha, where we explained there all the particulars of this law.

(7) 'Earlier, siman 65' — that is to say, that the essential point depends on this: if he is unavoidably prevented (an oness) at the time of the interruption, he returns to the beginning; and here too he is indeed in such an unavoidable situation. And regarding the Amidah, if this happened in the middle and he waited for water to be brought or for it to be absorbed into the ground, long enough to finish the entire prayer, it appears to me that possibly he need not return to the beginning — (because after the fact one may rely on the opinion of the Rashba and Tosafot in Berachot 22b, on the passage beginning 'mamtin,' who hold that he need not distance himself at all, since he is already standing in prayer; and if so, he was not an oness at that time — unless, in the pause until the urine alone ceased, there was already enough time to finish the whole prayer; and see in the Be'ur Halacha, and further on in siman 90, se'if 27, in the Mishnah Berurah there). And one who has an illness from which urine constantly drips, see further on in siman 80 in the Mishnah Berurah.
