Between the paragraphs (of the Shema and its blessings) — one may initiate a greeting of peace to a distinguished person, and may return a greeting of peace to anyone (who greets him). But in the middle of a paragraph he may initiate a greeting only to someone he fears, such as his father or his teacher, or someone greater than he in wisdom, and all the more so a king or a violent oppressor; and in the middle he may return a greeting to a distinguished person. This is permitted even in the middle of a verse, except for the verse 'Shema Yisrael' and 'Baruch Shem Kevod Malchuso L'olam Va'ed,' in which he may not interrupt at all — unless it is because of someone he fears may kill him.
If one forgot to put on tzitzis and tefillin, he may interrupt between the paragraphs to put them on and recite the blessing over them. The Rema adds: Some say that he should not recite the blessing over them until after the prayer, and this is the practice with regard to a tallis (Beis Yosef).
For Kaddish, for Kedushah, and for Barchu one interrupts, even in the middle of a verse; and likewise for Modim, but he says only the single word 'Modim' and no more. The Rema adds: Likewise for Barchu he does not say 'Yisbarach v'Yishtabach' and so on. And some say that the Amen answered after the blessing 'HaKel HaKadosh,' and after 'Shomea Tefillah,' has the status of a matter of sanctity (davar shebikdushah), and one may answer them during the Shema; and so is the essential ruling. And for all these one interrupts — all the more so when he is saying supplications — (Responsum of the Rashba).
A kohen who was reciting the Shema and was called up to read from the Torah — there is one who says that he interrupts (his Shema to go up), and there is one who says that he does not interrupt; and the halacha follows his words (the latter view).
And these are the points 'between the paragraphs': between the first blessing and the second, between the second blessing and the Shema, between the Shema (first paragraph) and 'V'haya im shamoa,' and between 'V'haya im shamoa' and 'Vayomer.' But between 'Vayomer' and 'Emes v'yatziv' he does not interrupt, so as not to separate between (the word) 'Hashem' and 'Emes' (true); rather he says 'Ani Hashem Eloheichem Emes' (I am Hashem your God — true), and then he may interrupt according to the law of the middle of a paragraph.
If he interrupted (before completing 'Emes') because of fear or honor, after he had already said 'Emes,' or he finished before the chazzan and joined 'Hashem Eloheichem' to 'Emes,' and he waits for the chazzan to begin so he can say it with him — he need not go back and say 'Emes' a second time.
He does not say Amen after 'Ga'al Yisrael,' because it would be an interruption (between redemption and prayer). The Rema adds: Some say that one does answer Amen, and so is the custom — to answer Amen after the chazzan; but if one prayed alone, he does not answer Amen, as (explained) below in siman 215 (Tur).
One must juxtapose (the blessing of) redemption to the prayer (Shemoneh Esrei), and he may not interrupt after he has said 'Ga'al Yisrael.' Only if a circumstance beyond his control befell him and he had not put on tefillin, and they became available to him between redemption and the prayer, he puts them on then, but he does not recite the blessing over them until after he prays. A tallis, however, he does not put on then. But if, before he said 'Ga'al Yisrael,' a tallis and tefillin became available to him, he puts them on, but does not recite the blessing over them until after the prayer. The Rema adds: Some say that before 'Ga'al Yisrael' he may recite the blessing over the tefillin, and so is the practice (Mordechai, Tosafos, and Hagahos Maimoni in the laws of Kri'as Shema).
One may not answer Kaddish or Kedushah between redemption and the prayer. So how does one manage (to answer them)? He waits at 'Shirah chadashah' (a point still within the blessing) in order to answer.
Whoever did not say 'Emes v'yatziv' in the morning and 'Emes ve'emunah' in the evening has not properly fulfilled his obligation of the mitzvah as it was ordained. The Rema adds: One who is under duress and pressed, with no leisure to pray immediately after the Shema, should recite the Shema up to (the word) 'Emes,' and wait to say the rest of the blessing until he prays, for then he says 'V'yatziv v'nachon' and so on, and prays, so that he juxtaposes redemption to prayer (Beis Yosef in the name of the Rokeach, siman 321).
(2) 'One may initiate a greeting of peace' — even in a foreign language. This applies specifically to a fresh encounter (someone he has not yet greeted today): he initiates and returns a greeting, for if he did not respond it would lead to enmity. And Sefer HaChinuch likewise wrote that concerning one whom we do not expect to take offense at his friend at all, he should not interrupt even between the paragraphs. Therefore, according to our custom today — that we do not greet one another in the synagogue during the time of prayer — God forbid that one should greet or respond, even words of Torah, neither between the paragraphs nor during the Pesukei d'Zimra. If one transgressed and interrupted during the Shema — even in a place where he was not permitted to interrupt — and did not pause long enough to have finished the whole of it, all agree that he goes back only to that verse; and some say (he returns) to the very word from which he stopped, if it is at a place where the topic concludes.
(3) 'A distinguished person' — one to whom it is fitting to extend a greeting first, such as one who is elderly or a Torah scholar; and likewise if he is wealthy, one whom it is fitting to honor on account of his wealth.
(4) 'To anyone' — who greeted him first. It is implied in the novellae of the Rashba that it is permitted even at the outset to greet one who is reciting the Shema, even though one knows he will be forcing him to respond. See above in se'if katan 2.
(5) 'His father or his teacher' — that is to say, his primary teacher, from whom the main body of his Torah learning comes, even though he himself is now greater in Torah than his teacher. Reverence applies to them, as it is written, 'Every man shall revere his mother and his father,' and we learned in the Mishnah, 'The reverence for your teacher shall be like the reverence for Heaven.'
(6) 'Greater than he' — but if they are equal, it falls under (the category of interrupting) for the sake of honor; and if the one reciting the Shema is greater than the other, he does not interrupt at all, even for a Torah scholar.
(7) 'In wisdom' — the later authorities ruled that even if he is greater than him, it is only (a case of interrupting) for the sake of honor, unless he is an outstanding Torah scholar of his generation, in which case it falls under (interrupting for) reverence.
(8) 'And all the more so a king' — even a Jewish king falls under (interrupting) because of fear, as it is written, 'You shall surely set a king over you' — that his awe should be upon you.
(9) 'Or a violent oppressor' — or an informer.
(10) 'The verse' — some say that in the middle of a verse he does not interrupt, except at a place where the topic concludes; and if he did interrupt, he afterward returns to the beginning of the verse. As a practical matter, when he interrupts to answer Kaddish or Kedushah, as will be explained further on, if he is unable to hurry and finish the passage, he may interrupt even in the middle of the passage and rely on those who hold the first opinion, who did not distinguish in this matter — for the sake of so great a mitzvah — to answer together with the congregation; and afterward he returns to the beginning of the verse.
(11) 'Except for the verse' — for there is nothing as great as the acceptance of the yoke of Heaven's kingship. For this reason he likewise does not interrupt between 'Shema Yisrael' and 'Baruch Shem Kevod Malchuso,' for it too is part of the (declaration of God's) unity (Beis Yosef).
(12) 'In them at all' — this implies that even for Kaddish, Kedushah, and Barchu he does not answer; and see the Biur Halacha. And it is possible that if the recitation is after the third (halachic) hour — so that it is merely like reading in the Torah — he must interrupt.
(13) 'Unless, etc.' — its law is the same as (that of an interruption) during the Shemoneh Esrei, below in siman 104.
(14) 'If one forgot' — or if he was prevented (by circumstance), in that he had no tzitzis and tefillin from the outset.
(15) 'Between the paragraphs' — and if they became available to him in the middle of a paragraph, he should delay putting them on until between the paragraphs, so that he will be able to recite the blessing over them. This applies only if they became available to him in the middle of the blessing of 'Yotzer Or' or 'Ahavah Rabbah'; but if tefillin became available to him in the middle of the Shema itself, he puts them on immediately, for at every single word of the Shema it is a mitzvah that tefillin be upon him. And the putting-on is to be with the blessing (Pri Megadim).
(16) 'A tallis' — for tzitzis is not a personal obligation — if one has no garment (requiring tzitzis) he is exempt from tzitzis, and he can recite the Shema without tzitzis — therefore (reciting) its blessing is considered an interruption. But tefillin is an obligation of the body, and moreover, without tefillin one is, God forbid, as though bearing false testimony against himself, since he says 'And you shall bind them' yet is not binding; therefore we adopt the first opinion, that (its blessing) is not considered an interruption. All this is with regard to the blessing; but the mere donning (of the tallis) is permitted, and after the prayer he handles the tzitzis and recites the blessing. It is implied in the Beis Yosef that even in the middle of a paragraph the mere donning is permitted, except during the first paragraph of the Shema. And the Pri Megadim wrote that this is what we adopt, in accordance with the Rema's ruling. And where he is sitting in the synagogue and is embarrassed to sit without a tallis, all agree that he may recite the blessing over it between the paragraphs.
(17) 'For Kaddish' — that is, for 'Amen, yehei shmei rabba' up to 'almaya'; he does not say 'yisbarach,' and he answers Amen after 'da'amiran b'alma.' But for 'Tiskabel,' 'Yehei shlama,' and 'Oseh shalom' he does not answer Amen, for that is only a custom. For Kedushah he says only 'Kadosh' and 'Baruch,' which are the essence of the Kedushah, but not 'Yimloch'; and all the more so he does not say 'Nekadesh' or the other passages that are added on Shabbos. And all of this he does not say even between the paragraphs.
(18) 'And for Barchu' — that he answers 'Baruch Hashem HaMevorach l'olam va'ed.' And for the blessing over the Torah he answers likewise, and also Amen at the end of the blessing; some are hesitant about this Amen, but between the paragraphs one may be lenient.
(19) 'He interrupts' — for if he interrupts to greet on account of the honor of flesh and blood, all the more so for the honor of the Holy One, Blessed be He. And for this reason it would seem that if he heard the sound of thunder, he interrupts and recites the blessing, since it is a mitzvah that will pass (if delayed). But others disagree: since he is engaged in the praise of the Omnipresent, he should not interrupt for the sake of another praise, and this is unlike all those (matters of sanctity) which are a davar shebikdushah (Tevuos Shor, Eliyah Rabbah, and the rest of the later authorities.) The מח"א likewise implies that if he heard them (the thunderclaps) in the middle (of a paragraph), he should not recite the blessing over them, but only when he heard them between the paragraphs.
(20) 'The word Modim' — meaning 'Modim anachnu lach' (only), and not the entire 'Modim d'Rabbanan,' for that would be a lengthy interruption. And it would seem that the same applies even between the paragraphs.
(21) 'HaKadosh' — because it (HaKel HaKadosh) is the conclusion of the first three blessings (of the Amidah), and 'Shomea Tefillah' is the conclusion of the middle blessings. But the Amen after the conclusion of 'Sim Shalom,' even though it is the conclusion of the entire Shemoneh Esrei, many later authorities agreed that he does not answer it in the middle of the Shema. See the Magen Avraham for the reason.
(22) 'These matters' — at first glance this is not precise, for the same applies to any Amen — he must interrupt for it when he is saying supplications. But in truth the Rema's words are quite correct, for he is speaking of the supplications customarily said at the end of the Shemoneh Esrei; therefore it is specifically these (two) Amens (that one answers). (So I found explicitly in a responsum of the Rashba, from which this ruling is derived.)
(23) 'Supplications' — and all the more so during the Pesukei d'Zimra. As to whether one may answer Amen between the paragraphs of the Shema and its blessings: the Chayei Adam, in section 20:4, wrote that one may answer only the Amen of the very blessing he has just concluded; but the Pri Megadim in siman 51, and likewise Rabbi Akiva Eiger in his novellae on this siman, agreed that one may answer any Amen between the paragraphs. If he relieved himself, he does not recite 'Asher Yatzar'; rather he washes his hands, and after the prayer he recites the blessing (Derech HaChaim).
(24) 'The Shema' — or he was engaged in its blessings; and whether he is standing in the middle of a paragraph or between the paragraphs (the following applies). The Eliyah Rabbah and the Derech HaChaim wrote that between redemption and the prayer he does not go up (to the Torah) even if they called him, and needless to say (he does not go up) in the middle of the Shemoneh Esrei.
(25) 'That he interrupts' — for indeed he interrupts on account of human honor and the fear of people, as stated above, and all the more so for the honor of the Torah. Accordingly, even if they called a Yisrael to go up to the Torah, he too interrupts, even in the middle of the Shema. The Shulchan Aruch specified 'a kohen' only for the sake of the novelty of the second view, which holds that he does not interrupt even for a kohen. Their reasoning is that this is no disgrace to the Torah, since he refrains from going up only because he is engaged in the mitzvah of the Shema and its blessings. And moreover, even though he is a kohen, there is no concern for a blemish (to his lineage) if he does not go up — that people would spread a rumor about him that he is disqualified — since the reason he does not go up is that he is at a point where he is not permitted to interrupt, there is no blemish in this, and all will know that it is for this reason; and even a Yisrael goes up in his place if there is no other kohen present.
(26) 'And the halacha follows his words' — The later authorities wrote that nowadays the world follows the first view; and even when they called a Yisrael while he stands in the middle of the Shema, even though we could obtain another Yisrael, nonetheless the custom is that they interrupt, for the honor of the Torah. The one exception: if he is standing at the verse 'Shema Yisrael' or 'Baruch Shem Kevod Malchuso,' he does not interrupt in the middle of them, but finishes them and then goes up. And one should not change the custom on account of the dispute. However, if he can hurry and finish up to the (end of the) paragraph, he should hurry; and if he cannot finish to the end of the paragraph, he should at least finish to a point where the topic concludes, but he should not hold things up for this. He should not read (the Torah portion) along with the chazzan; rather he should take care to incline his ear and listen to him. And all the more so he should not interrupt to tell the chazzan to make a 'Mi Shebeirach.' And it seems that if, in the middle of the 'Mi Shebeirach,' the chazzan forgot his name and asks him, all agree that he may answer him, on account of honor. And when he afterward returns to the Shema, he need only go back to the place where he stopped, even if it was a long passage and he thereby delayed enough to have finished the whole of it. All this is after the fact, when they have already called him up; but at the outset, even if he is (only) in the blessings of the Shema — and all the more so during the Shema itself — they should not call him up, even if there is no kohen present but him — for there is no concern here for a blemish, since he is engaged in the Shema — rather they call a Yisrael in his place, and it is permitted to call him by name and say 'in place of a kohen.' But some disagree and say that even in this there is a blemish to the kohen, since not everyone knows that he is engaged in the Shema; and it seems that one may rely (on the lenient view) and be lenient to call him up if he is standing between the paragraphs. It is better, if there is no kohen present but him, that he leave the synagogue before they call up the first (aliyah); and the same law applies to a Levi. And it seems obvious that if the Torah scroll is lying on the table and they have no one able to read from it except this one who is standing in the Shema and its blessings, all agree that he may interrupt for the honor of the Torah; but if it is easy for him to first finish to the (end of the) paragraph, he should finish. He should also then refrain from being the one who calls out the names of those called to go up to the Torah, because of the interruption.
(27) 'Between the paragraphs' — the points between the paragraphs of the evening Shema also have the same law as those of the morning (Magen Avraham in siman 236). And see the Biur Halacha.
(28) 'He does not interrupt' — the reason is that it is written, 'And Hashem, God, is truth,' therefore one may not interrupt within it (the joining of 'Hashem' to 'Emes'), and it is more stringent even than the middle of a paragraph. And see the Biur of the Vilna Gaon.
(29) 'Not to interrupt' — even with a mere pause (of silence).
(30) ''Eloheichem Emes'' — this implies that he need not say more (than the word 'Emes'). But some hold that since 'V'yatziv' is also an expression of truth, one should not interrupt between 'Emes' and 'V'yatziv.' In the Biur of the Vilna Gaon he agrees with the Shulchan Aruch, but it is good to be careful at the outset (and not interrupt there).
(31) 'And he waits' — meaning that if he did not pause, we silence him when he goes back and repeats 'Emes' — just as with one who says 'Shema Shema' or 'Modim Modim' (twice); but if he did pause, although we do not silence him, nevertheless he need not repeat it, for why should he double it a second time. And likewise, in every case where he interrupts during any of the blessings of the Shema, when he returns afterward he need only go back to the word from which he stopped. As for the Shemoneh Esrei, see below in siman 104:5.
(32) 'He does not say Amen' — whether after his own (blessing) or after the chazzan.
(33) 'After Ga'al Yisrael' — in the past tense, because it refers to the redemption from Egypt; but in the Shemoneh Esrei one says 'Go'el Yisrael' (present tense), because those are words of supplication and he is praying for the future. As for the evening piyut in which the custom is to say 'Baruch Atah Hashem, King, Rock of Israel and its Redeemer,' the Taz labored greatly to resolve it, and the Dagul MeRevava settled his difficulty. Nevertheless, because of this difficulty, men of (scrupulous) deed have the practice to say 'Ga'al Yisrael' in the evening service as well.
(34) 'And some say' — This 'some say' holds that one answers Amen even to his own blessing, since it is the conclusion of the order of the Shema's blessings, and they do not consider it an interruption between redemption and prayer. And therefore the Rema says that on the one hand our custom too follows this 'some say,' in that we do not consider it an interruption between redemption and prayer; and therefore the custom is to answer Amen after the chazzan; but if one is praying alone, our custom is not to answer Amen, as (explained) below in siman 215, see there.
(35) 'To answer, etc.' — and this applies specifically if he has not yet begun the verse 'Ado-nai sefasai tiftach' (which introduces the Amidah), for from there onward it is already like the prayer itself. There are meticulous ones who, wishing to satisfy all opinions, wait at 'Tzur Yisrael' or at 'Shirah chadashah' in order to answer Amen after the chazzan; but all the later authorities wrote that they do not act well, for that is in the middle of the paragraph of 'Emes v'yatziv,' and one should not answer any Amen there except the two Amens mentioned above in se'if 3 in the Rema's gloss. Also, at the outset it is fitting to begin the Shemoneh Esrei together with the chazzan and the congregation, all at once. Rather, there is another counsel, proper to follow in order to satisfy all opinions: that he aim to finish together with the chazzan at the same time, so that he is then not obligated to answer Amen; or that he begin the Shemoneh Esrei a little before the chazzan — namely the verse 'Hashem, sefasai...' and so on — for with this small amount there is surely no objection, since his getting ahead is not noticeable at all.
(36) 'After the chazzan' — that is to say, if it happened that he finished before the chazzan and had not yet begun the Shemoneh Esrei, and in the meantime the chazzan finished (then he answers). But he need not wait for this, according to all opinions.
(37) 'One must juxtapose' — see below, siman 111.
(38) 'And he may not interrupt' — even with a mere pause of silence between them.
(39) 'That he said Ga'al Yisrael' — and it is more stringent than the middle of a paragraph, in that one may not interrupt there even because of fear, just as in the Shemoneh Esrei, unless in a situation where there is a concern of danger (to life).
(40) 'Had not put on (tefillin)' — and he could not wait during the Shema until tefillin should become available, because he feared the time for the Shema would pass; and likewise, if he fears the time for prayer will pass, he prays without tefillin, and as soon as they later come to his hand — in the middle of the day or at Minchah — he puts them on and recites some psalm. It requires examination: one who has no tefillin at the time the congregation is praying — is it better that he pray with the congregation, even though he is without tefillin, and afterward, when tefillin reach his hand, fulfill the mitzvah of tefillin by itself; or is it better that he delay past the congregation's prayer in order to borrow tefillin from his fellow, so that he may recite the Shema and pray with tefillin? The Magen Avraham ruled that it is better he delay past the congregation's prayer and borrow tefillin, so that he may recite the Shema and pray with tefillin.
(41) 'He puts them on then' — for tefillin have a greater connection to the Shema and the prayer than tzitzis does.
(42) 'Over them' — The Pri Chadash disagrees and holds that since it is permitted to put on tefillin between redemption and prayer, he may also recite the blessing, and it is not considered an interruption; and so ruled the Even HaOzer. Nevertheless, the Derech HaChaim, the Chayei Adam, and many other authorities all cited the words of the Shulchan Aruch as the halacha.
(43) 'Until he prays' — at which point he handles them and recites the blessing over them.
(44) 'He does not put (a tallis) on then' — for perforce, if he wishes to wrap himself in a tallis, he would be compelled to stand in silence without beginning the Shemoneh Esrei, and that silence would be an interruption; and (this) was permitted only for tefillin.
(45) 'He puts them on' — for the putting-on of tefillin and the donning of a tallis is not an interruption, since he may even recite (the Shema) while engaging in his work as he reads, as (explained) above in siman 63:1.
(46) 'That before Ga'al Yisrael' — that is to say, before he has said 'Baruch Atah Hashem,' for after that it is certainly forbidden to interrupt for anything; rather he finishes 'Ga'al Yisrael' and puts on the tefillin without a blessing. And see nearby what we wrote in the name of the Maamar Mordechai.
(47) 'He recites the blessing, etc.' — it seems obvious that here it is forbidden to say 'Baruch Shem Kevod...' and so on, which is customarily said after the blessing 'al mitzvas (tefillin)'; it is also proper that he recite here only the single blessing 'lehani'ach,' for in any case many authorities hold this way, as (stated) above in siman 26, see there.
(48) 'And so is the practice' — and it is proven from the words of the later authorities that this is how we rule.
(49) 'And Kedushah' — and likewise Barchu and Modim. And he should take care to time it so that he bows at the beginning of the (Shemoneh Esrei) prayer at the moment the congregation bows themselves at Modim (thereby joining them without a verbal interruption).
(50) 'Between redemption' — some of the later authorities wrote that on Shabbos it is permitted to answer Kaddish, Kedushah, and all those similar things mentioned above in se'if 3, (even) between redemption and the prayer. And see below in siman 111.
(51) 'And how does he manage' — that is to say, if he has not yet heard Kedushah or Barchu (and wishes to be able to answer).
(52) 'He waits at Shirah chadashah' — after he has said 'oseh feleh.' All this is at the outset; but after the fact, as long as he has not said 'Baruch Atah Hashem,' he may answer. And afterward he must begin again from the start of 'Shirah chadashah,' or at least from 'Tzur Yisrael,' which is the beginning of the passage — similar to what the Magen Avraham wrote in se'if katan 3. And besides, one must, at the outset, say something of the theme of the concluding blessing just before the conclusion (Maamar Mordechai).
(53) 'As it was ordained' — but not that he has not fulfilled his obligation of the Shema at all, for we hold that the blessings do not hold back (i.e., are not indispensable to) the Shema; rather, through this (omission) his Shema too is not as it ought to be, and he should at least go back and recite it after the prayer, if he did not recite it before the prayer, as (explained) above in siman 60:2. And it is good that he recite the Shema once more (Birkei Yosef). The Tur wrote in the name of the Yerushalmi that in 'Emes v'yatziv' one must mention the Exodus from Egypt, (God's) kingship, the splitting of the Sea of Reeds, and the plague of the firstborn, see there. It is implied in the Rashba (Berachos 11) that this is indispensable, even after the fact. (But this requires examination from Berachos 14b in the Gemara: 'But he needs to mention... and v'sharnu lecha' — that is to say, from 'Mi chamocha' to the end of the blessing, according to Rashi — for according to this the plague of the firstborn is missing, and it is forced to distinguish between the morning and the evening; perhaps they had a different text at the end that also contained mention of the plague of the firstborn. And also from the Yerushalmi, Berachos ch. 1 halacha 6, it is somewhat implied that this is only at the outset, see there; and it requires examination in practice.) If he exchanged the morning blessing for the evening one, or vice versa: if he has not yet said the Divine Name of the end of the blessing, he goes back to the beginning of the blessing; and if he has (already) said the Name, he concludes (with the correct wording) and need not go back (Chayei Adam in the name of Rabbeinu Manoach).
(54) 'And he has no leisure' — this requires examination: who permitted him to interrupt (his Shema) merely because he has no leisure? Rather, one who has no leisure should recite the Shema by itself, without the blessings, and afterward, when he has leisure, recite the Shema with its blessings and pray, as (explained) above in siman 60:2 (Magen Avraham). The Nahar Shalom wrote that nevertheless the Rema's ruling is true and correct in a case where he recited the Shema because he thought he would be able to complete the entire prayer, and then, after reciting the Shema, he is compelled by some unavoidable circumstance to interrupt. In such a case he (the Rema) says that it is better that he interrupt after 'Hashem Eloheichem Emes,' and afterward, when he comes to pray, begin 'V'yatziv' and so on. But where he knew from the outset that he would not have leisure to recite the Shema and pray, and he fears the time for the Shema may pass before he has leisure, he too concedes to the Magen Avraham that he should recite the Shema by itself; and the Pri Megadim resolved (the difficulty) in a similar way, see there.
