Blessed are You, Hashem our God, King of the universe, who forms light and creates darkness. The Sages instituted mentioning the trait of night during the day (i.e., 'and creates darkness'), in order to remove from the hearts of the heretics who say that the One who created light did not create darkness.
If one erred and said '...who by His word brings on evenings' (the nighttime opening), but immediately caught himself and said 'who forms light' (the daytime opening), and also concluded with 'who forms the luminaries,' he has fulfilled his obligation. But if he said 'by His word brings on evenings' and did not say 'who forms light,' or did not conclude with 'who forms the luminaries,' he has not fulfilled his obligation. And if he said 'who forms light and creates darkness,' but then '...who by His word brings on evenings,' and also concluded with 'brings on evenings,' he has not fulfilled his obligation. The Rema adds: and likewise, if he initially said only 'who forms light' (with no nighttime error), if he then concluded with 'brings on evenings,' he has not fulfilled his obligation (these are the Rema's own words, explaining that this is how the Tur and the Rosh are to be understood); but if he concluded with 'who forms the luminaries,' since he opened with 'who forms light,' he has fulfilled his obligation, even though he interrupted with 'brings on evenings.'
Some say that the Kedushah found within the Yotzer blessing may be recited by an individual (praying alone), because it is merely a recounting of what the angels say, not a Kedushah requiring a quorum; and others say that an individual skips it, and it is recited only with a congregation. One should take their view into account and be careful that an individual recite it with the melody and cantillation of one reading from the Torah (rather than as a formal Kedushah). The Rema adds: the custom has already spread in accordance with the first opinion, and an individual does recite it; and when responding to this Kedushah (with the congregation), one recites it aloud. (Hagahot Maimoniyot, in the text of the prayers.)
The blessings of Yotzer (in the morning) and Ma'ariv (in the evening) one recites together with the chazzan (prayer leader), quietly. The Rema adds: he should hurry to finish before the chazzan finishes, so that he can answer Amen after the chazzan (Hagahot Maimoniyot, chapter 1 of the Laws of Blessings, and the Rokeach, siman 218). However, even if he did not recite it himself but only heard it from the chazzan, he has fulfilled his obligation, for these blessings the chazzan discharges the obligation of the individual, even if the individual is expert (and able to recite them himself); however, the chazzan does not discharge the individual's obligation with fewer than ten (a minyan) (the Ri, in the chapter 'Mi Shemeto'). And he should not answer Amen after concluding 'who chooses His people Israel with love,' because it would be an interruption (between the blessing and the Shema) (and see below, siman 61).
If someone erred (or could not continue) during the Yotzer blessing, in a case where another must stand up in his place (to continue for the congregation): if the error occurred from the Kedushah onward, the second person need only begin from the place where the first stopped. The Rema adds: that is, he begins from the Kedushah onward; and if the error occurred before the Kedushah, he must begin from the start of the blessing (the Ri and the Rosh in the chapter 'Ein Omdin,' Hagahot Maimoniyot chapter 10 of the Laws of Prayer, and the Tur).
(1) 'light' — one must pause between the words 'yotzer' and 'or,' so that it should not sound like a single slurred word, 'yotzror.' And see the Be'er Heitev and the Sha'arei Teshuvah for what they wrote further on this.
(2) 'immediately' — specifically immediately, meaning within 'toch kedei dibbur' (the span of a short utterance); but after that interval he has not fulfilled his obligation, for the blessing that he opened with 'Blessed are You, Hashem our God, King of the universe' no longer applies to what he went back and said, 'who forms light,' since he did not say it immediately. And that which the Shulchan Aruch wrote afterward, 'and did not say who forms light,' the same applies if he did say it, but not immediately; so wrote the Pri Megadim in the name of the Bach and the Prishah. But the Derech HaChaim rules that even if he did not catch himself until near the end of the blessing, nevertheless, since he had not yet completed it, he need not begin the Yotzer Ohr blessing again from the start; rather he says 'who forms light and creates darkness,' and so on, until the end of the blessing 'who forms the luminaries,' and he thereby fulfills his obligation. And this is how one should act in practice, as we wrote in the Be'ur Halachah.
(3) 'and did not say,' etc. — that is, even though he concluded with 'Blessed are You... who forms the luminaries,' since its beginning and middle were not said properly, he has not fulfilled his obligation, and he must return to the start, 'Blessed are You, Hashem our God, King of the universe,' in order, until after 'who forms the luminaries.' And see the Be'ur Halachah.
(4) 'and likewise' — all authorities hold this way, as explained in the Beit Yosef, for the concluding formula must certainly be said properly. And where the Shulchan Aruch mentioned earlier 'or did not conclude with who forms the luminaries,' its intent is not specifically a case where he erred and said at the outset 'who by His word brings on evenings'; rather it stated it merely to round out the matter of the opening clause. And likewise where it stated 'and if he said who forms light and creates darkness, who by His word brings on evenings,' etc., this is because it wished to conclude with the latter clause, that if he concluded with 'who forms the luminaries,' he has fulfilled his obligation, even though he interrupted with 'brings on evenings,' as explained in the Beit Yosef.
(5) 'only who forms light' — that is, he recited the entire text of the blessing correctly, except that he erred in the concluding formula; even so he has not fulfilled his obligation, for in the conclusion he did not bless over the light that begins to shine on this day.
(6) 'concluded with brings on evenings' — if within 'toch kedei dibbur' he caught himself and said 'who forms the luminaries,' he has fulfilled his obligation; but if he paused for the span of 'kedei dibbur' after saying 'brings on evenings,' he has not fulfilled his obligation, even though he then said 'who forms the luminaries' after that interval, and he must recite the Yotzer Ohr blessing again from its beginning.
(7) 'he has not fulfilled his obligation' — and if he erred and did not catch himself until he had begun the next blessing, Ahavah Rabbah, he should not interrupt in the middle; rather he finishes the Ahavah Rabbah blessing in order, and afterward recites 'who forms light' before the Shema.
(8) 'he has fulfilled his obligation' — the essence of this se'if is that there are two things in the morning Yotzer Ohr blessing that are indispensable (me'akev): first, the opening of the blessing or its middle must be said properly; second, the concluding formula of the blessing. And know that the same applies to the evening Ma'ariv Aravim blessing, as explained in Berachot 12a; see there.
(9) 'that he interrupted with Ma'ariv Aravim' — within 'toch kedei dibbur' of the opening of 'who forms light,' and he recited the entire text of the evening blessing except for its conclusion — even so we do not say that the opening words of 'who forms light' were thereby uprooted.
(10) 'skips it' — rather he recites the connecting phrases 'and they say with awe: Kadosh,' and 'the Ofanim...' etc., and 'and they say: Baruch' (skipping only the Kedushah verses themselves). The Pri Chadash wrote: even if he happens to be praying alone because he came late, since there is a congregation present, he recites them (the Kedushah verses) even in an undertone, according to all opinions.
(11) 'the custom has spread,' etc. — in the commentary of the Vilna Gaon he agreed, as a matter of law, with the latter opinion (that an individual skips it); and since one should not depart from the established custom (that an individual does recite it), it is proper, as a fine practice, that if one recites it alone he do so with melody and cantillation, like one reading verses; and so wrote the Pri Megadim in the name of the Levush, that it is good to be scrupulous in this.
(12) 'and when responding,' etc. — and this Kedushah, if possible, is best recited while seated.
(13) 'aloud' — specifically with a congregation, but an individual recites it in an undertone; so wrote the Eliyah Rabbah. But the Sha'arei Teshuvah wrote that there is no objection even for an individual if he recites it aloud.
(14) 'the Yotzer blessing' — and likewise for all the blessings of the Shema.
(15) 'together with the chazzan' — for although by strict law one may intend to fulfill his obligation through the chazzan's blessing, even an expert — since it is only in the Amidah that the chazzan does not discharge the obligation of an expert, as explained below in siman 124, because it (the Amidah) is a plea for mercy, and each person must beg mercy for himself — nevertheless, one should regularly recite it together with the chazzan, quietly, for since these are long blessings, a person cannot always concentrate along with the chazzan in silence. And nowadays people are not careful to recite it specifically in an undertone; and see the Be'ur Halachah.
(16) 'before' — for in the middle of the blessings it is forbidden to answer Amen, as explained in siman 66.
(17) 'he answers Amen' — but 'Baruch Hu u'Varuch Shemo' (Blessed is He and blessed is His Name) he should not say, for even during Pesukei DeZimra one does not interrupt for this, as the Magen Avraham wrote in siman 124.
(18) 'after the chazzan' — and likewise if he heard the end of a blessing from another person, whether this blessing or another one.
(19) 'he heard it from the chazzan' — and this is only if he intended to fulfill his obligation and the chazzan intended to discharge it for him, as explained above in siman 6, se'if 4.
(20) 'these' — the blessings of the Shema; and likewise for all blessings, as explained above at the end of siman 6 [and see there in the Pri Chadash, and in siman 8, se'if 5 — see there in the Machatzit HaShekel and the Artzot HaChaim — and siman 219, se'if 5, and siman 298, se'if 14] — except for the blessings of the Amidah, for the chazzan does not discharge the obligation of an expert, as explained below in siman 124.
(21) 'that he is expert' — and even if he has already fulfilled his own obligation he may still discharge it for another, as explained below in siman 69; and likewise for all blessings, as explained below in siman 585 and siman 692, except for blessings over enjoyment (such as food), for one who has already fulfilled his obligation cannot discharge it for another who is still obligated in the blessing, as explained below in siman 213, se'if 2 — and this is so even for one who is not expert.
(22) 'the individual' — even if he is not expert.
(23) 'with fewer than ten' — and this applies specifically to the blessings of the Shema; and also regarding the morning blessings the Levush is stringent, treating them like the blessings of the Shema [and see the Be'ur Halachah]; but other blessings, such as blessings over mitzvot and blessings over enjoyment — even a lone individual may discharge the obligation of another individual, even for an expert, as explained above in siman 8. However, regarding blessings over enjoyment there are several distinctions: for regarding the first blessing over bread and wine, all agree the law is as we wrote, as stated at the beginning of siman 193, se'if 1; but they must formally settle themselves for this, meaning that they sit down together. And regarding Birkat HaMazon (Grace after Meals), if only two ate, it is a mitzvah to separate and for each to bless for himself, unless one of them is not expert, in which case the expert discharges his obligation, as stated in siman 193; see there. And regarding other things besides bread and wine, whether the first blessing or the after-blessing, there are differing opinions among the authorities whether one may discharge the obligation of his fellow, as explained below in siman 213; see there.
(24) 'that it would be an interruption' — between the Shema and its blessing, just as it is forbidden to interrupt between any object of a mitzvah or enjoyment over which one blesses and its preceding blessing; but regarding the Yotzer Ohr blessing, he too concedes, as a matter of law, to the Rema on this, that if he finished before the chazzan, he should answer Amen after him. And see the Be'ur Halachah.
(25) 'siman 61' — in se'if 3, in the Rema's gloss, where it is explained that also for the blessing 'who chooses His people Israel with love,' the custom is to finish before the chazzan and answer Amen after the chazzan, as the Darchei Moshe wrote in this siman. And the reason is that the blessings of the Shema are unlike other blessings over mitzvot, for we do not bless 'who sanctified us with His commandments and commanded us to read the Shema'; rather they are independent blessings in their own right, which were instituted to be recited before the Shema; therefore there is no concern in interrupting between them and the Shema. And see the later authorities, who all cited the Rema's words as the law, that if one finished the blessing 'who chooses...' before the chazzan, he should answer Amen after the chazzan; but ideally it is better to finish evenly together with the chazzan, so that he need not answer Amen after him. And see the Derech HaChaim, who wrote that one should not answer Amen after any other blessing between Ahavah Rabbah and the Shema.
(26) 'in his place' — that is, a case where the first person does not know how to return to his place (in the blessing).
(27) 'from the Kedushah onward' — that is, in 'the Ofanim' or in 'to the God, blessed, who is pleasant' (the passages following the Kedushah).
(28) 'onward' — if he erred in 'the Ofanim,' he must begin from 'and the Ofanim,' and if in 'to the God, blessed, who is pleasant,' he must return to the beginning of 'to the God, blessed, who is pleasant.' And although we hold as law below in siman 126 that the second person must begin from the start of the blessing in which the first erred, here it is different, for since they answered 'Kadosh, Kadosh,' from there onward it is considered like the beginning of a blessing.
(29) 'from the beginning' — for one does not split a single blessing into two; and this applies only in the time when it was the practice to discharge others' obligation with the blessings of the Shema. But nowadays, when the custom is that each person blesses for himself, and no one fulfills his obligation through the chazzan's blessing, if the chazzan fell silent during the Yotzer Ohr blessing, and similarly in all the blessings [except for the Amidah], the second person standing in his place is forbidden to go back and begin from a place that he himself had already recited earlier.
