Yishtabach does not open with the word 'Baruch' (as most blessings do), because it directly adjoins Baruch She'amar, since both of them were instituted over the Verses of Praise (Pesukei DeZimra) — this one (Baruch She'amar) as the blessing before them and this one (Yishtabach) as the blessing after them; a blessing that follows immediately upon another blessing does not begin with 'Baruch.'

One should not answer Amen after the words 'the King who is lauded with praises,' but rather only after 'Life of the worlds' (Chei HaOlamim), for that is where the blessing actually concludes.

One who converses between Yishtabach and Yotzer (the blessing before Shema) has a sin in his hand, and on account of it he is turned back from the ranks of those going out to war (like one guilty of a transgression). And there is one who says that for communal needs, or to pledge charity for someone who has come to be sustained from charity, it is permitted to interrupt. The Rema adds: From this ruling there spread the custom in many places, to bless a sick person, or for someone to lodge a public complaint in the synagogue, demanding that justice be done for him, between Yishtabach and Yotzer, for all of this is considered a need of a mitzvah. And afterward, when they resume praying, the chazzan (sheliach tzibbur) should say a portion of Pesukei DeZimra and then say Kaddish over them, for one never recites Kaddish without some praise (of God) preceding it. This is also why we begin the evening prayer (Arvit) without a Kaddish [Kol Bo]. Likewise, one who did not have tzitzit or tefillin, and they were brought to him between Yishtabach and Kaddish, may put them on and recite the blessing over them (since this too is a mitzvah need). But between Kaddish and Barchu he may not interrupt for anything [so writes the א"ז, in the chapter Tefillat V'HaShachar]. And all the more so he should not interrupt after the chazzan has already said Barchu, before they begin the blessing of Yotzer. [the ב"י at the end of siman 57, in the name of the Manhig; and see further at the end of siman 56].

(1) 'Because it is adjacent' — even though verses (of Pesukei DeZimra) intervene between them (Baruch She'amar and Yishtabach), this is not considered an interruption that would sever the connection, just as with the final blessing recited within the Shema, or the one within Hallel, which likewise do not begin with 'Baruch' for this very reason (they follow a preceding text and are treated as adjacent to it).

(2) 'With praises' — this was the Shulchan Aruch's version of the text, but our version reads 'God, the great King who is lauded with praises.' That is to say: after the chazzan finishes Yishtabach with 'Blessed are You, Hashem, God, the great King who is lauded with praises,' no person should answer Amen at that point, for the blessing has not yet ended until he also says 'God of thanksgivings,' and so on, until 'Life of the worlds.' In the phrase 'Chei HaOlamim,' some vocalize the first word with a tzeirei ('Chei') and some with a patach ('Chai'); and even according to this latter opinion, one nonetheless says 'HaOlamim' with the letter hei (i.e., 'the worlds'), for its meaning is that He lives in both worlds and rules over this world and the World to Come.

(3) 'For that is where it is (the conclusion of the blessing)' — it requires further study whether one may then interrupt to answer Yehei Shmei Rabba (the Kaddish response) and Kedushah, since it is all one continuous statement until the very end; and see the Chayei Adam, principle 5, paragraph 13, that in any short blessing it is forbidden to interrupt in the middle, even for Yehei Shmei Rabba and Kedushah — though there is room to distinguish, and the matter requires further study.

(4) 'One who converses' — in the Kabbalistic writings it is stated to recite, during the Ten Days of Repentance, the psalm 'From the depths I called out to You, Hashem' (Psalm 130), between Yishtabach and Yotzer; and the matter requires further study (given the prohibition to interrupt there).

(5) 'From the ranks of those going out to war' — that is to say, as the verse states: 'Who is the man who is fearful and fainthearted? Let him go and return to his house' (Deuteronomy 20:8), and our Sages of blessed memory expounded: 'fearful' means fearful because of the transgressions in his hand; and this (idle talk here) is likewise included in the category of a transgression. And the Eliyah Rabbah wrote in the name of the Mateh Moshe, that the forces of impurity (kelipot) prevent the prayer from ascending, and through Pesukei DeZimra one cuts them off, so when one talks, those legions that array battle against us, in our many sins, return upon him because of this transgression. Therefore it is fitting not to converse.

(6) 'To pledge charity' — and the same applies to any matter of a mitzvah; but this is specifically between Yishtabach and Yotzer, which is a separate matter (a break between distinct sections), whereas between Kaddish and Barchu, or between the paragraphs of the Shema and its blessings, or of Pesukei DeZimra, it is forbidden to interrupt even for communal needs or for a matter of a mitzvah, as stated above in siman 51, se'if 4. [the Eliyah Rabbah and the Vilna Gaon, above in siman 51 there; see there].

(7) 'The chazzan' — this implies that even if only he alone (the chazzan) said the verses, he may still say Kaddish.

(8) 'A portion of Pesukei DeZimra' — and if he did not say any verses, he should not say Kaddish, but should rather begin with Barchu without a Kaddish, for you will never find a Kaddish without verses preceding it, except for the chazzan's Kaddish after the repetition of the Amidah, or the silent Amidah at Arvit, where the Kaddish refers back to the prayer (which stands in place of the verses). And the Magen Avraham wrote that this is why the custom arose to recite 'Perisat Shema' (Barchu and its blessing) [Barchu is called 'Perisat Shema,' as explained below in siman 69] after concluding the silent Amidah (Shemoneh Esrei), so that the Kaddish may be said over the Amidah; but afterward it is not fitting to say Kaddish unless he first said some verses. Now, recently, newcomers have arisen who recite Perisat Shema after the final Kaddish and then say another Kaddish, which is not correct — for what sense is there in saying two Kaddishes right next to each other? In any case, one should teach them to recite some verses between the two Kaddishes.

(9) 'Without praise (preceding it)' — or after a prayer (the Amidah), as we wrote in the previous se'if katan; and likewise, after one has learned some matter of the Oral Torah, he may say the Rabbis' Kaddish (Kaddish DeRabbanan). And see the Magen Avraham, who concludes that this is specifically if he afterward said at least a bit of Aggadah (a homiletic teaching), and then he may say the Kaddish DeRabbanan, for this Kaddish was primarily instituted over Aggadah. This is why the universal custom of Israel is to recite, after Pirkei Avot and after 'Bameh Madlikin,' the teaching of Rabbi Chananya ben Akashya, or 'Said Rabbi Elazar, said Rabbi Chanina: Torah scholars increase peace,' and so on (which are Aggadah). According to this, one must take care, when studying Mishnayot, to recite at the end of the study the teaching of Rabbi Chananya ben Akashya, or the like, so that through it they will then be able to say the Kaddish DeRabbanan. And after (studying) Tanach, one says a full Kaddish (Kaddish Shalem), even after only three verses. And one may not say Kaddish unless there were ten men in the synagogue at the time the verses were said and the learning took place, as will be explained in siman 55, in the Mishnah Berurah, se'if katan 2. And even if only two or three are actually learning, they may say Kaddish, as long as ten are present there. And even one who did not learn may likewise say the Kaddish, just as with Perisat Shema, below in siman 69.

(10) 'The evening prayer without a Kaddish' — see below in siman 69 what we wrote there on this matter.

(11) 'Likewise, one who did not (have tzitzit or tefillin)' — since all of this is a need of a mitzvah, therefore it is permitted to interrupt after he has finished the blessing of Yishtabach.

(12) 'And they brought them to him' — whether for an individual or for the chazzan. And even though it is a disgrace for the congregation to wait, nonetheless, since it cannot be avoided otherwise, it is permitted; and in this case the chazzan need not go back and repeat verses, since it is only a brief pause [Derech HaChaim]. And it appears that, regarding an individual, this refers to a case where he will be able to finish donning the tallit and tefillin before the chazzan reaches Yehei Shmei Rabba and Barchu, or where he has already heard Kaddish and Barchu; for otherwise, it is an established ruling in siman 25 that it is forbidden to interrupt between the hand-tefillin and the head-tefillin, even to answer Yehei Shmei Rabba and Barchu — rather he stays silent, listens, and directs his mind to what is being said; and it is not proper to do this as a first choice, to fulfill his obligation in this way, even according to the accepted principle that 'one who hears is as one who recites,' as is proven in Berachot 21b in Tosafot beginning 'Ad,' and in the Rosh there. In such a case it is better that he wait, rather than don the tefillin, until the chazzan finishes Barchu, and then put them on; and regarding the blessings (over them), see the next se'if katan.

(13) 'Between Kaddish (and Barchu)' — that is to say, from the moment Kaddish began, for the Kaddish belongs to Barchu as well (they form one unit). And see the later authorities who wrote that the status of the interval between Kaddish and Barchu is, in all respects, like that of 'between the paragraphs.' And immediately after Barchu, even though he has not yet begun the blessing of Yotzer, it is already like the middle of a paragraph, for from there onward it is like the beginning of Yotzer, since the chazzan's main intent in saying 'Barchu et Hashem' is that they should bless Him afterward in the blessing of Yotzer. Therefore, whether an individual or the chazzan, if a tallit did not come into his hands until Kaddish had already begun, he may wrap himself in it immediately, but he should not recite the blessing until after the prayer, and then he handles it and recites the blessing. As for tefillin, if they came to him before Barchu, he may recite the blessing over them, according to what the later authorities agreed in siman 66, that one may bless on tefillin between the paragraphs; but if they did not come to him until Barchu had begun, then he may no longer recite the blessing over them, rather he puts them on without a blessing, and when he reaches the point just before Ahavah Rabbah, he handles them and recites the blessing over them. And see the next se'if katan.

(14) 'After (the chazzan) has said (Barchu), etc.' — from this wording it is proven that even an individual should not interrupt, and see the previous se'if katan. And it appears that all this applies specifically in the case the Shulchan Aruch is discussing in the main text — namely, that he has already finished the blessing of Yishtabach and is standing ready to begin the blessing of Yotzer Or — but if he is still occupied with Pesukei DeZimra — and all the more so if he has only now come to pray, and wishes to pray in order and not skip Pesukei DeZimra by opening with the blessing of Yotzer — and he heard Kaddish and Barchu, then his status here is not like the middle of a paragraph, and according to all opinions he may don tallit and tefillin and recite the blessing over them. And see the glosses of the Gaon Rabbi Chaim Tzanzer.
