We recite Baruch She'amar before Pesukei D'Zimra and Yishtabach after them.

If one finished Baruch She'amar before the chazzan finished it he answers Amen after him.

After Yishtabach one may answer Amen after his own blessing (and see above, siman 215).

One must be careful not to interrupt with speech from when he begins Baruch She'amar until the end of the Shemoneh Esrei. And even for the sake of a mitzvah one should not speak between Baruch She'amar and Yishtabach (Beit Yosef in the name of the Kol Bo) (and see above, simanim 53 and 54).

Between these psalms one may greet someone out of respect and return a greeting to anyone and in the middle of a psalm one may greet out of fear and return a greeting out of respect.

One must pause between 'elilim' (idols) and 'and Hashem made the heavens.'

One must concentrate at the verse 'Potei'ach et yadecha' (You open Your hand) and if he did not concentrate he must go back and say it again. The Rema adds: We also say the verse 'Va'anachnu nevarech Yah' after Tehillah L'David (Ashrei) (Tur and Kol Bo) and we repeat the verse 'Kol haneshamah tehallel Yah,' since it is the end of Pesukei D'Zimra (Tur) and likewise the verse 'Hashem yimloch le'olam va'ed' (Abudarham). When one reaches 'And now, Hashem our God, we thank You,' or at the verse 'And every erect body shall prostrate before You' one should not bow or prostrate there, as [explained] below in siman 113 (the Ri, end of the chapter Ein Omdin, and Rabbeinu Yerucham, netiv 1). And the custom is to stand while saying Baruch She'amar, Vayevarech David, and Yishtabach.

One should not say the verses of praise (zemirot) hurriedly but rather calmly.

Mizmor L'Todah should be said with a melody for all songs are destined to be nullified in the future except for Mizmor L'Todah. The Rema adds: And we do not say Mizmor L'Todah on Shabbat and Yom Tov (Tur) nor during the days of Pesach, since the thanksgiving-offering is not brought during them because of chametz nor on the eve of Pesach; and see above siman 429 nor on the eve of Yom Kippur; and see above siman 604 and such is the custom in these lands (Minhagim).

(1) 'Baruch She'amar' — This praise was instituted by the Men of the Great Assembly by means of a note that fell from heaven, which they found written upon it. It contains 87 words, and its mnemonic is 'his head is like finest gold (paz),' the numerical value of 'paz' being 87 that is to say, the beginning (rosh) of the prayer is a blessing of 87 words therefore one should neither reduce nor add to the 87 words. It is proper to say it standing, even when praying alone. One holds the two front tzitzit while reciting Baruch She'amar and after finishing Baruch She'amar he kisses them. The word 'peh' (in 'b'feh') is vocalized with a segol and 'bi-tishbachot' with a chirik.

(2) 'If he finished' — But if he did not finish, he does not answer Amen and it is obvious that this applies specifically from the moment he began 'Baruch atah Hashem…' for the opening is merely praise. And all this applies only to the Amen of Baruch She'amar or of Yishtabach but as for other Amens, the Magen Avraham concludes in note 3 that one may answer even in the middle of the blessing of Baruch She'amar or Yishtabach since this blessing is not mentioned in the Gemara; however, if he is standing after the words 'Baruch atah Hashem' before he has finished 'melech mehullal ba-tishbachot,' the Chayei Adam writes that he may not answer, for by this he completely ruins the blessing.

(3) 'The chazzan' — But if he finished together with the chazzan simultaneously, he does not answer Amen for it looks like answering Amen after his own blessings, which we hold to be improper. And likewise the law is so for all the blessings except for Yishtabach, or Yehallelucha after Hallel, or after 'Shomer amo Yisrael la'ad' if he finished together with the shaliach tzibbur, or if another person answers Amen for many poskim hold that in this case one answers even after his own blessing; and although we do not follow this practice, as written in siman 215 nevertheless, in such a case one may certainly rely on this. And if he finished one blessing, whichever it may be, and the shaliach tzibbur a different blessing, he may answer Amen (Magen Avraham and Sha'arei Teshuvah, and so it is implied from the commentary of the Vilna Gaon, unlike the Yad Aharon).

(4) 'Amen after him' — This is not an interruption between the blessing and the matter it introduces for Pesukei D'Zimra is praise and Amen is praise and akin to song, so it is not an interruption. And if he spoke idle words between Baruch She'amar and Hodu it is possible that he must repeat the blessing because of the interruption and even a single word is an interruption (the Pri Megadim). And it seems to me that accordingly, even in silence it is good to be careful, ideally, not to delay much in between (see siman 206 in the Magen Avraham note 4 and in the novellae of Rabbi Akiva Eiger there).

(5) 'Siman 215' — for there it is explained in the gloss (Rema) that our custom is not to answer Amen [after one's own blessing].

(6) 'To be careful' — for Baruch She'amar is the blessing before Pesukei D'Zimra and Yishtabach is the blessing after it and between Yishtabach and Yotzer it is surely forbidden to interrupt, as below in siman 54 and from Yotzer onward these are the blessings of Kri'at Shema. The responsum Makor Baruch, siman 1, writes that it is proper to abolish the custom some have of interrupting between Baruch She'amar and Yotzer in order to bring the groom to the synagogue and the force of this custom is not sound enough to follow it; see there.

(7) 'From interrupting' — In every place where it is forbidden to interrupt, it is forbidden to speak even in the holy tongue (Hebrew). And when one must interrupt because of some unavoidable circumstance, or in a case like that of se'if 5, he should, before he speaks, say these verses: 'Baruch Hashem le'olam amen ve'amen…' until 'Vayevarech David'; and when he resumes from the place where he stopped, he likewise says these verses for they serve like a blessing before and after them.

(8) 'With speech' — Even 'Baruch Hu u-Varuch Shemo' one may not say, since it is not mentioned in the Gemara but Amen one may answer to any blessing he hears, even in the middle of a verse of Pesukei D'Zimra, if it is at a place where the subject concludes and likewise any blessing of thanks one may recite, such as Asher Yatzar after relieving himself, and the like and likewise to respond Modim D'Rabbanan and likewise to recite Kri'at Shema with the congregation, for one must read the first verse with them and all the more so that one may interrupt for Kaddish, Kedushah, and Barchu.

(9) 'The end of the Shemoneh Esrei' — And when there is Nefilat Apayim (Tachanun), one should not speak until after Nefilat Apayim (the Eliyah Rabbah and the Chayei Adam in the name of the Shitah Mekubetzet).

(10) 'For the sake of a mitzvah' — It is obvious that if one fears the time for Kri'at Shema will pass before he reaches it in the order of the prayer, and he forgot to say it before Baruch She'amar, he may interrupt and recite it and likewise if he forgot to recite Birkat HaTorah before davening, he may recite it in the middle of Pesukei D'Zimra and afterward say the customary verses for some say it is forbidden to say even Pesukei D'Zimra before Birkat HaTorah. One who stands in the middle of Pesukei D'Zimra should not, ideally, be called up to the Torah except for a kohen if there is no other kohen present, and likewise for a levi if he is the only one present and he may read quietly along with the reader but he should not interrupt to tell the chazzan to make a Mi She-Berach; and if the chazzan began on his own and forgot his name and asks him, he may answer him out of respect. And if he is near the end of a paragraph such that he can finish to the end of the paragraph without delay before he goes up, he should do so but if this requires delay, he should not tarry, because of the burden on the congregation (ש״א). It is forbidden to say the verse 'Mi yemallel gevurot Hashem…' after Baruch She'amar before Hodu and after the psalms are concluded some have the custom to say it. Some have the custom to say Kaddish before Baruch She'amar, and some have the custom to say it before Hodu.

(11) 'To Yishtabach' — But between Yishtabach and Yotzer, for a matter of mitzvah it will be explained at the end of siman 54 that some permit it.

(12) 'Out of respect' — [This refers] to greeting a distinguished person to whom it is fitting to extend a greeting first. In the verse 'Hashem melech, Hashem malach, Hashem yimloch le'olam va'ed' one should not pause in the middle, just as one should not between 'Hashem Eloheichem' and 'emet' (the Eliyah Rabbah). The Derech HaChaim writes that when one must interrupt and he is near the end of a paragraph, he should take care to hurry and finish to the end of the paragraph for it is better to interrupt between the paragraphs than in the middle of a paragraph; and see below in siman 66 in the Magen Avraham note 1, that nowadays, when we are not accustomed to exchange greetings in the synagogue during the prayer, Heaven forbid to greet or to respond, neither between the paragraphs of Kri'at Shema nor in Pesukei D'Zimra.

(13) 'And in the middle of the psalm' — that is to say, in the middle of the paragraph and these are the [boundaries of the] middle of the paragraphs: from 'Hodu' until 'amen ve-hallel la-Shem'; from 'Tenu oz…' until 'baruch Elokim'; from 'Kel nekamot' until 'al ge'im'; from 'Nafsheinu chiketah la-Shem' until 'yichalnu lach'; from 'Yehi shem' until 'al ha-shamayim kevodo'; and between one Halleluyah and another; and from 'Baruch Hashem le'olam' until 'amen ve'amen'; and from 'Vayevarech David' until 'le-shem tif'artecha'; and from 'Atah hu Hashem levadecha' until 'be-mayim azim'; and from 'Vayosha' until 'Hashem yimloch le'olam va'ed' (the Derech HaChaim).

(14) 'To pause' — [that is, pause] a little and likewise one should pause between 'ki' and 'kol,' for there is a pesik (a mark separating them) between 'ki kol'; therefore the kaf [of 'kol'] takes a dagesh. And between 'ha-amim' and 'elilim.' And between 'shamayim' and 'asah' one must also pause, so that the mem is not swallowed.

(15) 'One must concentrate' — for the main reason they established saying Tehillah L'David (Ashrei) every day is for the sake of that verse in which he mentions the praise of the Holy One, blessed be He, that He watches over His creatures and sustains them.

(16) 'Another time' — See the Chayei Adam, who cites in the name of the Levush that one must say from the verse 'Potei'ach' until the end of the psalm, in order. And if he did not remember until he had already said other psalms, and he has no time to go back, nevertheless he should say, after the prayer, from the verse 'Potei'ach' until the end of the psalm.

(17) 'Le'olam va'ed' — In the name of the Arizal they wrote that one should also say the Targum (Aramaic rendering) of this verse that is, he says the Scriptural text twice and the Targum once; and that one should say the verse 'Ki va sus Par'oh,' for this passage too is part of the essence of the Song [at the Sea] (but in the name of the Vilna Gaon they wrote not to say 'Ki va…'). In the second 'Mi kamocha' the kaf takes a dagesh, but in the first 'Mi kamocha,' and likewise 'Kol atzmotai tomarnah Hashem mi kamocha,' the kaf is soft (rafeh). In 'Am zu ga'alta' the gimel takes a dagesh. In 'Yidmu ka-even' the kaf takes a dagesh. One should pause between 'ba-mayim' and 'adirim,' for 'the mighty' refers to the Egyptians. One should say the Song of the Sea with joy and picture in his mind as if on that very day he crossed the sea and whoever says it with joy, his sins are forgiven.

(18) 'When they say Baruch She'amar' — It is implied in the Beit Yosef that on Shabbat it is likewise proper to stand when saying the verse 'Hashem melech, Hashem malach…' and so wrote the Magen Avraham in the name of the בע״ה; and he further wrote in the name of the Arizal that when the congregation would say 'Hashem melech…' he would stand with them, even though he himself had not yet reached that point.

(19) 'Vayevarech David' — [one stands] until he says 'Atah hu Hashem ha-Elokim.' The Arizal, of blessed memory, when he said 'Ve-atah moshel ba-kol,' would give tzedakah while standing.

(20) 'Hurriedly' — that he not skip any word nor slur them, but rather bring them forth from his mouth as if counting coins. And Rabbi Yehudah HeChasid wrote that one who is not well dressed should pray at home calmly in the winter (and this requires further study from siman 52 below; and perhaps it means that because of the cold he cannot concentrate properly even in the Shemoneh Esrei).

(21) 'On Shabbat and Yom Tov' — for the thanksgiving-offering is not brought then. There are places that say Mizmor L'Todah on Rosh Hashanah and Yom Kippur, because it contains 'Hari'u la-Shem kol ha-aretz.' But in our lands the custom is not to say it (the Pri Megadim).

(22) 'Because of chametz' — for with the thanksgiving-offering they had to bring ten loaves of chametz. Also on the eve of Pesach they could not bring a thanksgiving-offering, lest they be unable to eat it before the time chametz becomes forbidden and would have to burn it and it is forbidden to cause consecrated items to come to be burned. And for this reason too it is not [said] on the eve of Yom Kippur, because that reduces the time for eating them and brings them to become invalid (pasul). And for this reason too, one who is accustomed to say each day the passage of the offerings that pertain to an individual should not say it on the eve of Yom Kippur, since they are not brought on the eve of Yom Kippur, like the thanksgiving-offering except for the passage of the olah (burnt-offering), which he may say (the Pri Megadim in the name of the תבו״ש). And we do say Mizmor L'Todah also on the eve of Tishah B'Av and on Tishah B'Av (the Acharonim). One should not skip on Yom Tov the verse 'Mizmor shir le-yom ha-Shabbat,' for Yom Tov too is called Shabbat (the Be'er Heitev).
