He should wrap himself in tzitzis and recite the blessing while standing.

The manner of his wrapping should be like the way people cover themselves in their garment while going about their work — sometimes with the head covered, sometimes with the head uncovered. Nevertheless it is proper that he cover his head with the tallis.

Our small tallises (talleisos ketanos) that we are accustomed to wear — even though they do not involve [full] wrapping (ittuf) — one fulfills through them the obligation of tzitzis. And it is good to place it on his head, its width along his height, and wrap himself in it, and stand thus wrapped at least the time it takes to walk four amos, and afterward draw it down from over his head and wear it [normally].

He positions two tzitzis in front of him and two behind him so that he is surrounded by the mitzvah.

He recites the blessing “lehisatef ba-tzitzis.” If two or three wrap themselves in a tallis together (that is, at one time) they all recite the blessing; and if they wish, one recites and the others answer amen.

Over a tallis katan one may recite “lehisatef,” even though he does not wrap himself in it but only wears it. The Rema adds: Some say that one blesses over it “al mitzvas tzitzis,” and so is the custom, and one should not deviate. (The source references given by the Rema; the abbreviated citations are left as they appear.)

One must separate the strings of the tzitzis one from another.

He should have in mind, as he wraps himself, that the Holy One, blessed be He, commanded us to wrap ourselves in it, so that we remember all His commandments to perform them.

Before he blesses he should examine the tzitzis strings [to see] whether they are valid, so that his blessing not be in vain.

If he puts on a tallis katan while his hands are not clean, he wears it without a blessing, and when he washes his hands he handles the tzitzis and blesses over it; or, when he dons another tallis, he blesses over that one and intends to include this one too, and he need not handle the tzitzis of the first one.

The essence of the mitzvah of a tallis katan is to wear it over his garments, so that he will always see it and remember the commandments.

If he has several four-cornered garments, they are all obligated in tzitzis; and if he put them all on without interruption and had them all in mind from the outset, he recites only one blessing; but if he interrupts between them, he must bless over each and every one. And the same applies if he did not have them all in mind from the outset — it is as if he interrupted between them. The Rema adds: And likewise, if he removed the first before donning the second, he must go back and bless again. (Terumas ha-Deshen, siman 45.)

One who puts on a tallis katan and blesses over it when he goes to the synagogue, and [then] wraps himself in a tallis gadol, must bless over it [the tallis gadol], for the walk from his home to the synagogue is considered an interruption. But if he prays within his home, [then] if he had in mind from the outset the tallis gadol too, and did not interrupt in between with speech or with other matters, he need not go back and bless.

And if he removed his tallis, even if he intended to return and wrap himself in it immediately, he must bless when he returns and wraps himself in it. The Rema adds: Some say that one does not bless, if he intended to return and wrap himself in it (Agur, siman 35); and some say [this is] only when a tallis katan remained on him — and so is the custom (ibid.). (See later, siman 25, se’if 12.)

If his tallis fell off unintentionally and he wraps himself again, he must bless — but that is [only] when all of it fell off; however, if not all of it fell, even though most of it fell, he need not bless.

One who sleeps in his tallis at night must bless over it in the morning, even if he did not remove it, and it is good to handle it at the time of the blessing. And so shall one do who puts on his tallis before the day grows light. (The source references; the abbreviated citations are left as they appear.)

If one covered himself with a garment that is obligated in tzitzis and did not place tzitzis on it, he has nullified [i.e. failed to fulfill] the mitzvah of tzitzis.

[The dibbur ha-maschil:] “He should wrap himself in tzitzis” — immediately after washing the hands, so that he not walk four amos without tzitzis.

[On the word] “while standing” — that is to say, the wrapping and the blessing — both of them are done standing. The wrapping, because it is written “lachem” (for yourselves), and we derive a gezeirah shavah from the Omer, regarding which “lachem” is also written; and regarding the Omer it says, “from when the sickle is first put to the standing grain (ba-kamah),” which we expound as “be-komah” (upright, standing). And the blessing — because every blessing over a mitzvah must be [said] standing. And this is only le-chatchilah, for bedi’eved he has fulfilled his obligation in both, in every case. And most of the Acharonim agreed that le-chatchilah the blessing should come before the wrapping — that is, at the moment he holds it in his hand and is about to wrap himself in it, for that is “over la-asiyasan” in the fullest sense (immediately before the act). And he should not do it earlier, while the tallis is still folded, for that is “over de-over” (before the “before”).

[On “] with the head uncovered” — for even though we bless “lehisatef” (to wrap oneself), covering the body by itself constitutes “wrapping,” and that is the essence of the wrapping. And travelers, who leave the tallis folded and drape it around their necks upon their shoulders, do not fulfill the obligation of tzitzis this way, for in such a manner — by all opinions — it is not “wrapping.”

[On “] with the tallis” — for this covering subdues a person’s heart and brings him to fear of Heaven. And see the Taz, whose view is that it is proper not to remove the small cap on his head during the prayer, even though he is [also] covering his head with the tallis. And the Bach wrote that the tallis must be upon his head from the beginning of the prayer until its end. And in any event he should stand thus wrapped at least the time it takes to walk four amos. It is written in the Kavanos of the Arizal, of blessed memory: he would cover the tallis over the tefillin shel rosh. And see the end of siman 27 that, in any event, he should not cover [them] entirely. At the time of wrapping he covers his head with the tallis until it reaches down to his mouth, and throws all four tzitzis to the left side [and stands so] for the time it takes to walk four amos. And afterward he removes the wrapping [from over the head], until the shel rosh is somewhat visible, as [mentioned] above. And he sets each of the tzitzis in its place, as stated in se’if 4. And this is the wrapping through which one fulfills the obligation according to all opinions — and not as some people do, who draw the tallis over themselves until the head reaches the middle of the tallis’s length and wrap themselves in it, for that is not called “wrapping”; see Moed Katan 24a. It is implied in the Gemara that an unmarried young man would not cover his head with a tallis, even if he is a talmid chacham.

[On “] small tallises” — that is, provided they have the measure whereby a child of nine years could cover his head and the greater part of his body with it, and an adult of thirteen years would at least not be embarrassed to go out in it occasionally in the street, as [explained] later in siman 16; see there in the Mishnah Berurah.

[On “] one fulfills the obligation with them” — for nowadays all our garments are worn in the manner of covering, and [full] wrapping is not [even] alluded to in the Torah.

[On “] wrapped” — in order to satisfy also the view of those who hold that specifically [full] wrapping is required. And it appears that those who practice not to bless over the tallis katan at all, but rather include it in the blessing of the tallis gadol, need not wrap themselves in it at all. And see the Magen Avraham and the Bi’ur ha-Gra.

[On “] and afterward” — for the main concern is at the time of wearing.

[On “] tzitzis” — they were accustomed to make an “atarah” (a collar) from a piece of silk, as a marker so that the tzitzis that are in front of him will always remain in front of him, as Chazal said: a beam that merited [a place in] the north always remained in the north. But in the writings of the Arizal, of blessed memory, it is stated that the Arizal was not particular about this.

[On “] ba-tzitzis” — with a sheva under the beis.

[On “] in a tallis” — and the same law applies to tefillin and to every blessing over a mitzvah.

[On “] together” — meaning: each one wraps himself in his own separate tallis, but all the wrappings were done at one time — to exclude [a case] where [one wrapped] after the span of a “kdei dibbur” from his blessing, which is an interruption, and [then] each must bless for himself. And see later, siman 206, se’if 3.

[On “] and if they wish” — from this wording it is implied that it is better that they all bless. But in truth the opposite is so: le-chatchilah it is better that one bless and thereby discharge the others, because of “be-rov am hadras melech” (in a multitude of people is the King’s glory), as [explained] later in siman 298, se’if 14. However, nowadays they do not practice this way, and perhaps [it is] because not everyone is expert in intending to be discharged and to discharge [others]. And see the Sha’arei Teshuvah.

[On “] one blesses” — and discharges the others, even if they are expert — provided the listener intends to be discharged and the one saying [the blessing] intends to discharge. And more than this: even if the one blessing has already fulfilled his own obligation, or is not wrapping himself at all, he can discharge others with his blessing, for all Israel are areivim (guarantors) one for another. But in this [latter case] some say that he discharges only one who is not expert. The Pri Megadim wrote: if several men bought new tallises and made tzitzis on them, and had not [yet] recited “Shehecheyanu” — which is recited at the first wrapping, as explained in siman 22 — although one may recite “lehisatef” on behalf of them all, nevertheless the blessing of “Shehecheyanu” — each one must bless it himself.

[On “] they answer amen” — even though in any case one must answer amen after every blessing, nevertheless in this [blessing], by which he wishes to be discharged, the obligation [to answer] is greater, for by [answering] he actively shows that he intends to be discharged by it. However, bedi’eved, even if he did not answer amen, he has fulfilled his obligation, as [explained] later in siman 213, se’if 2.

[On “] but only wears it” — and [yet] the blessing is “lehisatef,” for such is the fixed text of the blessing — just like “leisheiv ba-sukkah” [is said even though one does not literally “sit” at that moment].

[On “] and one should not deviate” — this refers to our tallis katan, in which one does not wrap himself. But with a tallis katan in which one does wrap himself, as explained in se’if 3, he may le-chatchilah bless “lehisatef.” And bedi’eved: if he blessed “lehisatef” over any tallis katan, or blessed “al mitzvas tzitzis” over a tallis gadol, he has fulfilled his obligation. And know that one should not bless over a tallis katan unless its length is at least three-quarters of an amah on each side, and the neck-hole opening does not count toward the measure; and also that its greater part be open [at the sides]. And men of [pious] deed are accustomed to [have] an amah in front of them and an amah behind them. And see in the Mishnah Berurah and the Bi’ur Halachah in siman 16 what I have further written on this matter.

[On “] one from another” — each string on its own, so that they not be tangled one with another. And if he would be delayed in coming to the synagogue, and through this he would miss praying with the congregation, the Magen Avraham wrote that he need not be meticulous about this. And see the Bi’ur Halachah. The Arizal wrote: “tzitzis” is an acronym for “tzaddik yafrid tzitziyosav tamid” (a righteous man always separates his tzitzis-strings).

[On “] he should have intent as he wraps himself” — and this is in addition to the intent one must have upon wearing it, [namely] to fulfill the mitzvah of tzitzis. And the Bach wrote that the same law applies to tefillin and sukkah: although for other mitzvos one fulfills his obligation even without intending anything specific — so long as he performs the mitzvah for the sake of Hashem who commanded it to be done — these [three] are different; for regarding tzitzis it is written “so that you shall remember,” regarding tefillin “so that the Torah of Hashem be in your mouth,” and regarding sukkah “so that your generations shall know.” Nevertheless it appears that all this is [only] le-chatchilah, in order to fulfill the mitzvah in its completeness; but bedi’eved, even if he did not have all these intentions, [but] only to fulfill the positive commandment, he has fulfilled his obligation. And afterward I found in the Pri Megadim in siman 25 that he wrote so (and so too is implied in the Olas Tamid and the Bi’ur ha-Gra, that even for tzitzis the intent is not indispensable).

[On “] he should examine” — it is implied from the words of the Bach and the Eliyahu Rabbah that even on Shabbos one should check the tallis. And see in siman 13, in the Bi’ur Halachah.

[On “] the strings of the tzitzis” — one must also check them up above, at the place of the garment’s hole up to the knot, for there it is invalid even if [only] a single string is severed. And see the Bi’ur Halachah.

[On “] in vain” — even though, apart from this, there is [also] a concern of transgression — that he might [be] wearing a four-cornered garment without tzitzis — nevertheless we establish it upon its presumptive status (chazakah) that it was valid; it is only because of the severity of “lo tissa” (taking [the Name] in vain), which attaches to a blessing in vain, that they ruled stringently to check it. And according to this, one who wears several garments with tzitzis would need to check only one of them, since one blessing serves them all. But the Acharonim wrote that he must check all of them: first, because we do not rely on a chazakah in a place where one can verify [the matter]; and also because it is a weak chazakah, since the strings are apt to become severed. Therefore he must check [them] every day, in the morning, when he puts them on; and then, even if he removed them and diverted his attention from them — [and] even though he needs a [new] blessing when he goes back and puts them on — even so he need not check again, for in such a short time [the strings] are not apt to become severed, and we rely on the chazakah. And even in the morning, if through the checking he would miss praying with the congregation, or [if] he was called up to the Torah, he may put on his tallis without checking — provided he knows that the strings were intact yesterday. And nevertheless it is proper to inspect somewhat, as much as is possible. And if he borrowed a tallis from another in order to be called up to the Torah — regarding which our custom is not to bless over it — he need not check it at all (and see the Bi’ur Halachah). And if he checked the tallis when he removed it from upon himself and placed it in his own bag, he need not go back and check it the next day when he wraps himself in it.

[On “] he handles the tzitzis” — for through this it is reckoned somewhat as though he is putting it on then. And although we hold, regarding all the mitzvos, that one must bless immediately prior to their performance, here it is different, because the man is as yet not fit [to bless, since his hands are not clean].

[On “] and he intends to include it” — and so is the practice in our times: to bless over the tallis gadol and to intend thereby to include the tallis katan. And this is far preferable to the practice of some people, who bless over the tallis katan and immediately [afterward] bless over the tallis gadol, thereby causing an unnecessary blessing. Moreover, even if he would interrupt for a long time between the tallis katan and the gadol, there are many times when it is not fitting to bless over it [the katan]: because its greater part is not open, or [because] it is smaller than the measure explained later in siman 16, or [because] he sleeps in it at night — as [explained] later in siman 16 in the Mishnah Berurah.

[On “] over his garments” — but in the [kabbalistic] writings it is stated that the tallis katan is [worn] under his garments. And the Magen Avraham wrote that in any event the tzitzis must be outside, and not like those who tuck them into the corners. However, men who go about among the non-Jews fulfill [their obligation] this way. Nevertheless, at the time of the blessing they should be uncovered [for the span of walking] four amos.

[On “] he will see it” — as it is written: “and you shall see it and remember,” etc. And those men who put their tzitzis into their trousers — not only do they avert their eyes from what is written, “and you shall see it and remember,” etc., but they even degrade the commandment of Hashem, blessed be He, and they are destined to give a reckoning for this. And as for what they say, that they go about among the gentiles — for that it would have sufficed for them to place the tzitzis inside the corner. And were they to have some gift from a king of flesh and blood, upon which the king’s name was engraved, how they would constantly adorn themselves with it before people; and how much more so with tzitzis, which alludes to the Name of the King of kings of kings, the Holy One, blessed be He, as [explained] later in siman 24, se’if 5 — how honored is the person who bears His Name upon himself! And Chazal said: “one who is careful in the mitzvah of tzitzis merits to behold the face of the Shechinah.” And it is implied from the verses that the Jews who remain at the end of days will be distinguished by this mitzvah, as it is written: “and ten men, from all the tongues of the nations, shall take hold of the corner of a Jewish man,” etc. (Zechariah 8:23). And Chazal said on this (Shabbos 32b): whoever is careful in the mitzvah of tzitzis merits that two thousand eight hundred servants attend upon him, etc.

[On “] all of them are obligated” — that is to say, if he wears them all. But if they are lying in his chest, they are exempt, for we hold that tzitzis is an obligation of the person (chovas gavra) and not an obligation of the vessel [i.e. the garment], as [explained] later in siman 19.

[On “] he interrupts between them” — this means a long interruption that falls under [the category of] diversion of attention. But for a mere pause of some time, the Magen Avraham and the rest of the Acharonim ruled later, in siman 206, that silence is not deemed an interruption bedi’eved, even if he paused far longer than a kdei dibbur. And if he spoke in between: if the speech was for the need of the wearing — such as saying “give me a garment to wear” and the like — it is obvious that he need not go back and bless. But if it was not for the need of the wearing, there are [differing] views among the poskim. And the opinion of the Mechaber later in se’if 13, and [that of] the Magen Avraham and many of the Acharonim (see the Shach, Yoreh De’ah, siman 19, s.k. 7), follows those poskim who hold that even ordinary speech is also included in [the category of] an interruption for this matter. But there are Acharonim who rule that, since there are those who hold in this [case] that he need not go back and bless — [regarding it] as one who spoke in the middle of a meal — it is better not to enter into a doubtful blessing. And so the Pri Megadim agreed. Therefore let every person be careful not to speak; and if he did speak, he does not go back and bless. And all the more so should he be careful not to make a long interruption, for it is forbidden to cause an unnecessary blessing, as [explained] later in siman 215.

[On “] he did not have [them] in mind” — that is to say, that he did not have [them] in mind explicitly, but merely blessed without specification.

[On “] it is as if he interrupted” — since [the Mechaber] wrote it without qualification, it implies that this applies even if all the four-cornered garments were lying before him at the time of the blessing, and even so he must go back and bless; for it speaks of one who is accustomed to wear only one [such garment], and therefore, without specification, the blessing does not cover them all — for it is like one who reconsiders (nimlach) — unless he had them explicitly in mind. And the same law applies if he blessed “al mitzvas” over a tallis katan, as is our custom, and immediately took the tallis gadol: if he explicitly intended to include [it] with the “al mitzvas,” he need not go back and bless; but without specification he goes back and blesses, for without specification his intent in the “al mitzvas” is only upon the tallis katan. Yet in any event, le-chatchilah one should certainly be careful not to bless over a tallis katan if he intends to put on the tallis gadol immediately afterward, because of causing an unnecessary blessing. If he put on a tallis without checking and found it invalid, or its tzitzis became invalid afterward, and he puts on another tallis, he must bless a second time — unless at the time of the blessing he explicitly had in mind everything that he would wear afterward.

[On “] if he removed” — the Acharonim disagree with this, and hold that the removal is not an interruption according to all opinions. And it is not comparable to what the Mechaber wrote in se’if 14, that the removal is an interruption, for there he did not have in mind at the time of the blessing that he would remove it and go back and put it on; but here he had in mind at the time of the blessing the wearing of the second garment.

[On “] to bless over it” — even if he immediately went to the synagogue and did not divert his attention at all in between.

[On “] for the walk” — and the Acharonim agreed that the walk itself is not considered an interruption. Even so, they wrote that one must bless over the tallis gadol, because of a change of place. And according to this, the same law applies if, after leaving his home, he immediately returned to his home and put on the tallis gadol there — he too must bless over it, even though at the time of the blessing he had the tallis gadol in mind too; for it is like foods that do not require a blessing after them, where a change of place is an interruption, as is written [in] siman 178. And see the following s.k.

[On “] is considered an interruption” — and the Chayei Adam was concerned for the view of those who hold that a change of place is not an interruption in this [case], and therefore he ruled stringently not to bless — unless the synagogue was far from his home, or he did not have it too in mind at the time of the blessing, or he diverted his attention in between.

[On “] within his home” — even if he put on the tallis katan in this room and the tallis gadol in another room — for a change of place does not apply [going] from room to room, since he had this in mind — as [explained] later in siman 273, end of se’if 1. And that which [the Mechaber] wrote, “with speech,” [applies] even to a single word. And see above in s.k. 28, in what we wrote in the name of the Acharonim for the practical ruling.

[On “] he must bless” — even if a tallis katan remained on him, and even if he immediately wrapped himself in it again and did not change his place at all in between — for the removal itself is an interruption in this [case]. And see above in this siman, s.k. 31, what we wrote there.

[On “] that one does not bless” — even if, at the time of the removal, no tallis katan remained on him. And so the Acharonim ruled. And the reasoning of the “some say” is: since, at the time of the removal, his intent was to put it back on immediately — and so he did — the removal is not an interruption. And even if he changed his place in between — such as [where] he removed it in order to enter the lavatory, and all similar cases — the change of place in this [case] is not an interruption, since he went back and put on that very same tallis. And it is not comparable to what the poskim agreed in siman 25 [in se’if 12; see there in the Mishnah Berurah], that if one removed tefillin with the intent of entering the lavatory it is an interruption thereby; for there it is different, since — because the lavatory is forbidden [to be entered] in tefillin — it is a complete interruption; which is not so with a tallis, since by law it is not forbidden, only that it is not proper to do so, and therefore it is not an interruption thereby. And know: that if at the time of the removal his intent was not to put it on immediately, but [only] after some time — even though he afterward went back and wrapped himself in it at once — by all opinions he must go back and bless, and even if a tallis katan remained on him; for as soon as he removed it, the mitzvah departed. And the same law [applies] in the reverse: if at the time of the removal his intent was to put it on immediately, and afterward he tarried some time and diverted his attention, in this too, by all opinions, he must go back and bless, even if a tallis katan remained on him.

[On “] only when [a tallis katan] remained” — the Acharonim ruled like this “some say,” but they concluded that this “some say” speaks only where the removal of the tallis was without specification (bi-stama); therefore we say that if a tallis katan remained on him he has not yet diverted his attention from the mitzvah, and if not, he presumably diverted his attention. But if his intent was explicitly to go back and put it on immediately, he need not go back and bless when he puts it on immediately, even if no tallis katan remained on him; and likewise, in the reverse, the tallis katan does not help — as we wrote above. And it appears that if he removed it in the midst of the prayer, then even without specification it is like one who removed it with the intent to go back [to it]; and likewise, if he folded it and placed it in his bag, it is like one who removed it explicitly with the intent not to go back [to it].

[On “] unintentionally” — even according to what we rule — that where he removed his tallis with the intent to put it back on he need not bless — in this [case] it is worse, since it fell off without [his] intent and its mitzvah has departed. And even if a tallis katan remained on him it does not help.

[On “] he must bless” — even if he puts it on immediately. And if it fell off him in the middle of the Shemoneh Esreh, and others put it back on him — when he finishes the Shemoneh Esreh he handles the tzitzis and blesses.

[On “] even though most of it fell” — the Taz and the Eliyahu Rabbah disagree about this, and the Gra too inclines to the words of the Taz. And according to all opinions, if it fell off the entire body, even though it remained in his hand, he must bless, since its mitzvah has departed — for the essence of the mitzvah of wrapping is upon the body. If he blessed over the tallis and it fell from his hand before he wrapped himself in it, and he lifted it up and put it on, he need not bless a second time. And even if its tzitzis then became invalid, and he had tzitzis ready and fixed them at once, he need not bless a second time; for since he had not yet performed his mitzvah, he did not divert his attention [as with tefillin, later in siman 25, se’if 12; see there in the Taz, s.k. 12]. And one who took a tallis to wrap himself in it and began to bless over it, and before he finished the blessing it was taken from him, and tefillin were before him, may finish the blessing “…who sanctified us with His commandments and commanded us to don tefillin,” and he fulfills [his obligation] thereby [Halachos Ketanos, siman 153, and the [work abbreviated] “ha-A”H” agreed with him as a practical ruling].

[On “] he must bless” — for we hold that night is not the time of tzitzis, and so [the night] is an interruption. And some disagree in this, since a daytime garment is obligated even at night according to a few of the poskim, as [explained] later in siman 18, and [in] a doubt regarding blessings we are lenient. And nevertheless it is proper to intend to include it [i.e. exempt it] with the tallis gadol. And all this is [only] so long as he did not remove it; but if he removed it with the intent not to put it on again immediately, he must bless afterward, when he puts it on, according to all opinions. And nevertheless, le-chatchilah it is not proper to adopt this stratagem in order that he become obligated in a blessing according to all opinions, because of [the concern of] a blessing that is unnecessary according to those who exempt. As for one who sleeps during the day, the afternoon nap, and removes the tallis katan from himself — there are [differing] views among the poskim as to whether this falls under [the category of] diversion of attention. Therefore it is proper that, in any event, he cover himself with it at the time of the sleep, and [then] when he puts it on afterward no blessing is needed, according to all opinions.

[On “] shall one do” — see the Taz, who wrote that this “and so [shall one do]” is not [entirely] precise, for in this [case] he is required by law to handle [the tzitzis] in the morning when he blesses over the tallis.

[On “] the mitzvah of tzitzis” — for tzitzis is an obligation of the person (chovas gavra), with respect to this: that if he covered himself with a tallis, then the obligation takes effect upon him. See siman 17.
