One should recite the Shema with concentration (kavanah), with awe and fear, with trembling and quaking.

'Which I command you this day' (Devarim 6:6) — that is to say, each day they should be new in your eyes (fresh and beloved), and not like one who has already heard it many times, for whom it is no longer dear.

In the recital of Shema there are 245 words, and in order to complete the count to 248 — corresponding to the limbs of a person — the chazzan (prayer leader) concludes aloud, 'Hashem your God is true (Hashem Elokeichem emet),' and then repeats aloud, 'Hashem your God is true,' (adding three words to reach 248). The Rema adds: Through this every person fulfills the obligation, since they hear these three words from the mouth of the chazzan (the Beit Yosef in the name of the א"ח). And if an individual also wishes to say these words together with the chazzan, there is no prohibition in it (the Rema's own words). And if he recites alone, he should have in mind the fifteen vavs in 'Emet v'yatziv,' which total 90, and they correspond to the three Divine Names (of the Tetragrammaton), for each Name equals 26 and its four spelled-out letters come to 30 (making 90). The Rema adds a further reason: the fifteen vavs total 90, and the reciting itself counts as one, making 91 — the numerical value of the Name as read and as written (together) so it is as though he said, 'Hashem, my Lord (Ado-nai), is true.' (the Maharik, root 42, and the Agur). And some have written that anyone reciting Shema alone should say 'Kel Melech Ne'eman' (God, faithful King) before 'Shema...,' for these three words complete the count of 248, and it stands in place of the 'Amen' one would answer after the blessing 'who chooses His people Israel with love.' And so is the custom. But it seems to me that nevertheless, when reciting with the congregation, one should not say 'Kel Melech Ne'eman'; rather he should answer 'Amen' after the chazzan concludes the blessing — and so is the custom, and this is correct.

It is customary to recite the first verse aloud in order to awaken concentration.

It is customary to place one's hand over one's face during the recital of the first verse, so that he not gaze at something else that would keep him from concentrating.

One must prolong the ches of 'echad' (One) so as to enthrone the Holy One, blessed be He, over heaven and earth — for this is hinted by the hump in the middle of the roof of the ches. And he should prolong the dalet of 'echad' long enough to reflect that the Holy One, blessed be He, is unique in His world and rules the four directions of the world; but he should not prolong it beyond this measure. And some have the custom to tilt the head according to the thought — up and down and to the four directions.

He should stress the dalet so that it not sound like a reish.

He should not rush the ches, and should not prolong the alef.

It is forbidden to say the Shema twice, whether he doubles the words, saying 'Shema, Shema,' or repeats the first verse.

When one recites the Shema upon his bed (before sleep), he may read the whole passage and then read it again; and there is one who says that even in this case one should be careful not to say the first verse The Rema adds: (twice).

Those who, at the pre-dawn watch during Selichot, and on Yom Kippur at the Ne'ilah prayer, say the verse 'Shema Yisrael' twice — one should teach them not to say it (twice).

'Hashem, He is God,' which is said on Yom Kippur at the Ne'ilah prayer seven times — is a proper custom. The Rema adds: Some say one should be careful not to answer 'Amen' twice to any blessing (the Beit Yosef in the name of the Ohel Mo'ed).

After the first verse one must say 'Baruch shem kevod malchuto le'olam va'ed' quietly (in an undertone).

One must pause slightly between 'le'olam va'ed' and 'Ve'ahavta,' in order to separate accepting the yoke of Heaven's kingship from the rest of the mitzvot. The Rema adds: One should pause in the first verse between 'Yisrael' and 'Hashem,' and between 'Elokeinu' and the second 'Hashem,' so that it be heard as: 'Hear O Israel, that Hashem, who is our God, is the one Hashem' (the Rokeach). And one should pause slightly between 'echad' and 'Baruch,' for the essence of accepting Heaven's kingship is the first verse (the Abudraham).

One must pause between 'hayom' (today) and 'al levavecha,' and between 'hayom' and 'le'ahavah,' so that it not seem to mean 'today, but not tomorrow.'

One must pause between 'nishba' and 'Hashem,' in order to sound the ayin well, so that it not seem like a hei.

One must clearly enunciate the zayin of 'tizkeru,' so that it not sound like 'tishakru' (you will lie) or 'tiskeru' (you will be hired), which would make it like servants who serve in order to receive a reward. And likewise he must clearly enunciate the zayin of 'uzchartem.'

He should stress the yud of 'Shema Yisrael,' so that it not be swallowed and not appear as an alef; and likewise the yud of 'vehayu,' so that it not sound like 'veha'u.'

One must leave a breath (slight pause) between 'vecharah' and 'af,' so that it not sound like 'vecharaf.'

One must leave a space between a word whose beginning is like the end of the word before it, such as: 'bechol levavecha,' 'al levavchem,' 'bechol levavchem,' 'esev besadcha,' 'va'avadtem meherah,' 'hakanaf petil,' 'etchem me'eretz.'

For every alef that follows a mem one must pause between them, such as 'ulmadtem otam,' 'ukshartem otam,' 'vesamtem et,' 'ur'item oto,' ('uzchartem et,' 'va'asitem et'), so that it not appear as though reading 'motam met.'

Even in Pesukei d'Zimra and in the Amidah one must be precise in this. The Rema adds: And likewise one who reads in the Torah, the Prophets, and the Writings should be careful (the Beit Yosef in the name of the Radak).

One must be precise not to soften a letter that has a dagesh (strong), nor harden one that is soft (without dagesh), nor leave still a sheva that should move (na), nor move one that should rest (nach).

One should read the Shema with the cantillation (te'amim) as they are in the Torah. The Rema adds: But this was not the custom in these lands; nevertheless, the meticulous are stringent in this.

When he says 'Ukshartem le'ot al yadecha,' he should touch the tefillin of the hand; and when he says 'Vehayu letotafot bein einecha,' he should touch that of the head; and when he says 'Ur'item oto,' he should touch the two tzitzit in front of him (and see above, siman 24, se'if 5).

Some have the custom to recite the Shema aloud, and some have the custom to recite it in an undertone. The Rema adds: In any case, they should say the first verse aloud, and so is the custom (the Kol Bo).

(1) 'Shema' — This means the entire Shema recital; for what was explained at the end of the previous siman applies only after the fact (b'diavad).

(2) 'With concentration' — the Eliyah Rabbah brought in the name of the Kolbo, and it is in the Yerushalmi at the end of the first chapter of Berachot, that the Ten Commandments are alluded to in the Shema. In 'Hashem Elokeinu' is alluded 'I am Hashem your God.' 'Hashem Echad' — the commandment 'You shall have no other gods.' And in the verse 'Ve'ahavta' is alluded the commandment 'You shall not take [Hashem's Name in vain],' for one who loves the King does not swear falsely by His Name. And in 'Uchtavtam' — 'You shall not covet,' as it is written 'your house,' and not your fellow's house. And in 'Ve'asafta deganecha' — 'You shall not steal,' for it is your own grain, not your fellow's grain, that you gather. And in 'Va'avadtem meherah' — 'You shall not murder,' for one who kills will be killed. And in 'Lema'an yirbu yemeichem' — 'Honor your father.' And in 'Velo taturu... and after your eyes' — 'You shall not commit adultery.' And in 'Lema'an tizkeru...' — 'Remember the Shabbat day,' which is weighed against the entire Torah. And in 'I am Hashem your God' — 'You shall not bear false witness against your fellow.' Therefore a person must contemplate them while saying the Shema, so that he not come to transgress any one of them.

(3) 'With awe and fear' — It appears that this awe and fear is achieved thus: that he should intend, while reading the Shema, to accept upon himself the yoke of the kingship of Heaven, to be slain for the sanctification of the Unique Name — for this is 'with all your soul,' even if He takes your soul. And of this the verse says, 'For Your sake we are killed all the day.' For then, with this intention, he will read it with awe and fear, with trembling and quaking.

(4) 'With trembling and quaking' — the Tur wrote in the name of Rav Amram: a person should regard the Shema, whenever he reads it, as a new royal decree (that is, the written command of the king upon the citizens of his province). And he should think in his heart: if a flesh-and-blood king were to send a new decree, surely all the citizens would read it with awe and fear, with trembling and quaking; how much more so the Shema, which is the decree of the King of kings, the Holy One, blessed be He, that each person is obligated to read it with awe and fear, with trembling and quaking. And the Prishah wrote that they compared it to the written decree and command of a king in order to tell you that you should not read the Shema hastily, in a rush, with jumbled words, but calmly, word by word, and with a pause between one matter and the next, like a person reading the king's command with great deliberation, each command by itself, to understand it properly. So too he should read the Shema — each and every command, and each punishment mentioned in it, he should take to heart, to understand it, for it is the command of the great King, blessed is He.

(5) 'Dear to him' — the Pri Megadim wrote that all the more so one must strive to understand each time what he is saying, and not read it in a rush out of habit, merely to discharge the obligation of reciting.

(6) 'To complete 248' — as it is stated in the Midrash HaNe'elam: R' Yehudah began and said, 'It shall be healing for your body and marrow for your bones' (Mishlei 3:8) — the Torah is a healing for body and bones, in this world and the next. For R' Nehorai said in the name of R' Nechemyah: in the Shema there are 248 words, like the number of a person's limbs, and whoever recites the Shema properly, each and every limb takes one word and is healed by it — and this is 'It shall be healing for your body,' etc. But behold, in the Shema there are only 245 words! etc. What is its remedy? They ordained that the chazzan repeat three words — and which are they? 'Hashem Elokeichem emet' — to complete 248 words for the congregation, etc. And anyone who says the Shema not with the congregation does not complete his limbs, since he lacks the three words that the chazzan repeats. What is his remedy? He should intend the fifteen vavs in 'Emet v'yatziv.' Yet even so, Abba would apply to him, 'What is crooked cannot be made straight' (Kohelet 1:15), 'and what is lacking cannot be counted' — those three words of Shema that the chazzan repeats cannot be counted for him to complete the 248 like the rest of the congregation. So ends the citation, in brief (the Beit Yosef).

(7) 'The chazzan concludes' — and the individual, praying quietly, also concludes with the word 'emet'; but afterward he does not repeat 'emet'; rather he begins 'V'yatziv v'nachon,' etc., as explained later in siman 66, se'if 10, in the Rema's gloss.

(8) 'Hashem your God is true' — In the Sefer Asarah Ma'amarot it is written that the chazzan should not conclude quietly with the word 'emet,' but only when he repeats it aloud; for in this way the count comes out to 248, since otherwise it would be 249. But the custom follows the Shulchan Aruch, that one says 'emet' also the first time, so as not to separate it [from 'Hashem your God']; and the second 'emet' is not part of the count, but is [the start of] the blessing 'Emet v'yatziv.' So wrote the Pri Megadim; but the Vilna Gaon wrote that the main view is like the Asarah Ma'amarot.

(9) 'And repeats and says' — but in a place where the custom is not to repeat, we protest against them (they ought to repeat).

(10) 'Hashem your God is true' — and he should not repeat the word 'Ani' (I) either [when repeating aloud].

(11) 'In the matter' — but he should not say 'emet' alone together with the chazzan, for that would be like saying 'Shema, Shema' (a forbidden repetition); and even so, we do not silence him if he paused in between.

(12) 'The fifteen vavs' — and in the evening (Ma'ariv) he should intend that 'emet' stands in place of the three aforementioned Names.

(13) 'Making 91' — the numerical value of 'Amen,' and the numerical value of, etc. (the Darchei Moshe).

(14) 'He should say Amen' — see the Magen Avraham and the Bach, that it is a holy custom (the Pri Megadim).

(15) 'He should say Amen' — Nevertheless, one should not derive from this a ruling concerning one who recited a blessing over fruit, or who finished the blessing of 'HaMotzi' but has not yet eaten, and meanwhile his fellow finished that same blessing — that he should answer 'Amen' after him; see the Pri Megadim; and so it is proven above in the commentary of the Vilna Gaon, siman 59, letter 12, see there — that the reason for the Rema's ruling here is that the blessings were not instituted specifically for the Shema.

(16) 'And so is the custom' — see the Pri Megadim, and see what we wrote above, that ideally (l'chatchilah) it is better to finish together with the chazzan, so that he need not answer 'Amen' after him — see there.

(17) 'Their hand' — that is to say, the right hand.

(18) 'To prolong the ches' — the Magen Avraham wrote in the name of the מ"ע that he should prolong the ches for one-third of the measure, and the dalet for two-thirds. And some say that he should not prolong the ches at all, but direct his entire intention during the dalet; and so wrote the Vilna Gaon in his commentary.

(19) 'And he should not prolong more' — so [writes] the Pri Megadim in the name of the Pri Chadash.

(20) 'The thought' — Although we say that one reading the Shema should not wink with his eyes, etc., that is because there the winking and gesturing are for another purpose and nullify the concentration; but here the gesturing is for the sake of the concentration itself. And the tilting should be east, north, west, south, and he should not tilt the head east, west, north, south, for that would form, God forbid, [the shape of] warp and woof (a cross).

(21) 'The dalet' — but he should not stress it excessively, so that it not seem as though the dalet were vowelized with a sheva or a tzere; rather the intent is that he should sound it well with his mouth.

(22) 'Shema twice' — because it appears as though he is accepting upon himself two authorities, God forbid. And if he lacked intention the first time, he should go back and read it quietly; and if there is no one listening, it is permitted even aloud; but if he had intention the first time, it is forbidden even quietly. And during Selichot it is permitted to say 'Shema' each time one recites 'Vaya'avor,' for since he pauses greatly in between, it does not look like two authorities. And see the Taz in siman 63, se'if 3, who likewise wrote that if he waits some time between the first reading and the second it is permitted, and we do not silence him, unless he reads it twice consecutively; and it is not even considered unseemly.

(23) 'Whether he doubles' — After the fact, if he doubled the verse he has fulfilled his obligation; but if he doubled only the words, it requires further study — see the Biur Halachah.

(24) 'The first verse' — it is stated in the Beit Yosef that from the first verse onward there is no concern; but from the wording of the Rif it would seemingly not appear so — see there. And see the Magen Giborim, that the Meiri too is stringent in this; but upon his bed (before sleep) there is certainly no need to be stringent in this.

(25) 'Upon his bed' — This implies specifically upon his bed, in order to sink into sleep out of [reciting] the Shema, for protection; but elsewhere it is forbidden to read even the whole passage twice. And even upon his bed it is only permitted if he reads the [whole] passage, and not the first verse alone (the Vilna Gaon). And it seems to me that all this is specifically if he reads the Shema passage by itself; but if he also reads the other passages, there is no concern in the matter.

(26) 'That they should not say it' — but the Bach wrote that one should not abolish the custom in a place where they have practiced it, and so wrote the Eliyah Rabbah; but the Levush, the ל"ח, and the Magen Avraham forbid it, and from the words of the Vilna Gaon it likewise appears that he forbids it.

(27) 'It is a proper custom' — for they are praising the Creator, may He be blessed, who dwells above the seven heavens. We also find in Scripture, twice, 'Hashem, He is God,' regarding Eliyahu. And saying 'Baruch shem...' three times on Yom Kippur is likewise permitted, for it is not regarded as two authorities — for [that concern applies] only to the verse 'Shema,' which is the essence of accepting the yoke of Heaven's kingship; and since he has accepted the yoke of Heaven once, there is no concern in saying 'Baruch shem...' more than once, for it refers back to the verse 'Shema Yisrael,' and there is no one who would come to err.

(28) 'Amen twice' — for this too appears like two authorities; and see the Magen Avraham, who is lenient in the matter, but the later authorities have agreed to forbid it. And if he says 'Amen v'amen' [as one phrase] it is permitted, as it is written, 'Blessed is Hashem forever, Amen and Amen' (Tehillim 89:53). And see the Pri Megadim, who wrote a novel point in this: that there are two types of 'Amen' — one meaning 'I believe and affirm that this is the truth,' and the second, which has the sense of a request — that is to say, may the words be confirmed and may He fulfill our requests. Accordingly, in a blessing that contains two matters — for example, 'Heal us, Hashem, and we shall be healed... who heals the sick,' etc. — one may well say 'Amen' twice. And if it happened that he needed to answer to two matters, it is possible that a single 'Amen' counts for both; and if he says 'Amen v'amen' it is preferable.

(29) 'Baruch shem kevod...' — and if he did not say it, there are differing opinions among the decisors as to whether we make him go back; see the Magen Avraham, and see the Biur Halachah.

(30) 'Quietly' — for when Yaakov our father, peace be upon him, called his sons, he wished to reveal to them the End (of days), as it is written, 'And I will tell you what will befall you at the end of days' (Bereishit 49:1), but the Divine Presence departed from him and did not let him reveal it. He said to his sons: perhaps there is among you someone unworthy? They all responded and said, 'Hear O Israel, Hashem is our God, Hashem is One.' The elder [Yaakov] then declared, 'Blessed is the Name of His glorious kingdom forever and ever.' And the Sages said: what shall we do? If we say it — Moshe did not say it [in the Torah]; if we do not say it — Yaakov did say it! So they ordained to say it quietly. And this is a marker that it is not part of the passage written in the Torah, but that Yaakov said it.

(31) 'Between le'olam va'ed' — for 'Baruch shem...' is also included in accepting the yoke of Heaven's kingship; therefore one must wait a little after it.

(32) 'So that it not be swallowed,' etc. — the Shulchan Aruch cited these particular words, and likewise throughout the whole Shema he should take care not to slur the letters and not to interchange them with other letters, for example, the verse 'Ve'ahavta,' etc. — he should not seem like one reading 've'ahafta, levafcha, nevashcha, modecha' [slurring the letters]; and similarly throughout the whole Shema he should be careful to read calmly, each word by itself, and to enunciate the word from his mouth properly, so that all his 248 limbs be completed through this, as above in se'if katan 6. And see further on in siman 62, in the Mishnah Berurah, se'if katan 1.

(33) 'Bechol levavecha' — the intent is not that he pause between them, but only that he read in a way that makes it heard that there are two lameds; nevertheless there must be a makef (hyphen) between them, for without a makef one would read 'bechol' with a cholam, whereas with a makef it is read with a kamatz.

(34) 'As though reading motam' — the Eliyah Rabbah brought in the name of the Shela"h that likewise, for every alef following a mem, one must pause, such as 'va'avadtem elohim acheirim,' 'eineichem asher zonim achareihem,' 'Eloheichem asher,' 'l'Eloheichem ani,' 'Eloheichem emet.' Also, any word beginning with an alef that one might not sound distinctly requires a pause, such as 'asher anochi,' 'metar artzechem,' 'v'atzar et,' 'asher Hashem,' 'divrei eileh,' 'vayomer Hashem el,' 'daber el,' 'mitzvot Hashem,' 'asher atem,' and all similar cases. Also, any word beginning with a yud must be stressed in pronunciation, so that it not seem drawn onto the word before it, such as 'pen yifteh' — it should not seem as though he reads 'penifteh' or 'pen ifteh'; and likewise 'yirbu,' and all similar cases.

(35) 'One should be careful' — and they cautioned specifically about the Shema only because it is entrusted to everyone and it contains the unification of God's Name.

(36) 'The resting sheva' — a sheva that is 'grabbed' [not sounded] is called nach (resting), such as at the end of a word, or mid-word after a short vowel; and a sheva na (moving) is the one that is vocalized, such as at the start of a word, or mid-word after a long vowel. And a mnemonic ('ת"ג — pituchei chotam'): only when a chirik has a yud beside it is it read as a long vowel (tenu'ah gedolah, ת"ג), and when it has no yud beside it, as a short vowel (tenu'ah ketanah, ת"ק).

(37) 'Thus [with the cantillation]' — except that he must be careful to pause at the place fitting to pause according to the meaning, so that his words have sense and understanding. Therefore he should take care to read it calmly, for otherwise the meaning of his words may sometimes be changed by this.

(38) 'In this' — provided that he concentrate, for the melody, for one not accustomed to it, causes a loss of concentration.

(39) 'When he says Ukshartem le'ot' — and likewise in the second passage, when he mentions the matter of tefillin, he should touch [them].

(40) 'Some have the custom,' etc. — regarding whether one fulfills the Shema through another who intends to discharge his obligation for him, see the Magen Avraham and the Pri Megadim; and most of the later authorities hold that one does fulfill it this way, and this is better than mere thought, for thought is not like speech, whereas here 'one who hears is like one who recites.' And the ע"ת wrote that it appears [this works] specifically when the listener understands the language, and even in the Holy Tongue we require that the listener understand — see siman 193, se'if 1. And the Knesset HaGedolah brought in the name of the Birkat Avraham that this applies specifically to an individual discharging the obligation for [another] individual; but an individual discharging the obligation for the many, or an individual discharging it for two people in the Grace After Meals (Birkat HaMazon) — even if they do not understand the Holy Tongue, they fulfill their obligation.
