The place for wearing the hand-tefillin is on the left arm, on the raised muscle of the bone that lies between the elbow and the armpit. One tilts the tefillin slightly toward the body, so that when he bends his arm downward they will lie opposite his heart, and he thereby fulfills 'and these words shall be upon your heart.' The Rema adds: One must place it on the top of the bone, the part near the elbow, but not on the half of the bone that is near the armpit. (Semak.) One whose hand is amputated, having no hand but only the upper arm, should put it on without a blessing. Tosafot in chapter HaKometz wrote that such an amputee is obligated, while the Or Zarua wrote that he is exempt.

The proper custom is that the yod of the knot of the hand-tefillin should face toward the heart, with the tefillin-box beside it on the outer side. One should take care that the yod of the knot does not slip away from the box.

The proper custom is to arrange that the ma'avarta (the loop through which the strap passes) lie toward the shoulder, and the box (ketzitzah) toward the hand.

Nothing may interpose between the tefillin and his flesh, whether it be the hand-tefillin or the head-tefillin. The Rema adds: This applies specifically to the boxes themselves, but with the straps one need not be particular. (Rashba in a responsum, siman 827.)

A person who is prone to head-colds (a running of the nose), who, if he had to place the head-tefillin directly on his flesh, would not put them on at all, may be permitted to place the head-tefillin over a thin cap that lies close to his head, and he should cover them because of onlookers. The Rema adds: One who wears them in this way should not recite a blessing on the head-tefillin, but should recite only the blessing 'lehaniach' on the hand-tefillin. (According to the view of the Rashba.)

A left-handed person (whose right hand is the weaker one): if he does all his work with his left hand, he wears them on his left, which is everyone else's right hand, and if he is ambidextrous, he wears them on what is everyone else's left hand. But if he writes with his right hand yet does all his other actions with his left, or writes with his left yet does all his other actions with his right — some say he wears the tefillin on the hand of weaker strength, since we require the 'weak' hand; and some say that the hand with which he writes is considered his 'right' for this matter, so he wears the tefillin on the opposite hand. The Rema adds: And this is the accepted practice.

Even though a person has a sore at the place where tefillin are worn, he should still put on tefillin, for there is room on the arm to set two tefillin, since the bone near the armpit, from its midpoint down to the elbow, is all a valid place for wearing tefillin.

The strap of the hand-tefillin should be long enough to encircle the upper arm, and from it he ties the knot and extends it onto the middle finger, winding it around his finger three times and then fastening it. It is the widespread custom to wind six or seven windings around the forearm. The Rema adds: One should not wind the strap over the titora (the base of the box) in order to hold the tefillin tight on the arm. (Maharil.)

The place for the head-tefillin runs from where the roots of the hair begin, above the forehead, up to the end of the area where an infant's skull is soft.

The knot must sit behind the head, high up on the nape, and one must position the box so that it is centered, directly opposite the point between the eyes; the knot too should be centered on the nape and not lean this way or that. And the part of the knot that appears like the letter dalet must face outward. The Rema adds: And likewise with the knot of the hand-tefillin, one must take care that it does not flip over. (Mordechai, folio 96.)

The black side of the straps must face outward, and they should not become turned over, whether of the hand or of the head. He should let the straps hang down in front of him, reaching to the navel or a little above it. The width of the straps, both of the hand and of the head, must be at least the length of a barleycorn. If the straps fall short of the proper measure in length or width, and he cannot find others, he wears them as they are until he finds others of the correct measure. It is good for the head-tefillin to be exposed and visible, but for a student in his teacher's presence it is not respectful to expose his tefillin before him. The Rema adds: And with the hand-tefillin one need not be particular whether they are exposed or covered. (Mordechai there.) And it seems to me that nowadays, when we wear tefillin only during the Shema and the prayer, even a student in his teacher's presence may expose them, even the head-tefillin, and such is the custom, not to be strict about it. (His own words.)

(1) 'The left' — because the verse writes 'yadecha' with an added heh, which is read as 'yad keihah,' the weak hand, meaning the left, which is the feebler and weaker one. They further derived from 'and you shall bind them' and 'and you shall write them': just as writing is with the right hand, as is people's way, so too the binding is with the right hand; and since the binding is with the right, the placing is perforce on the left. And if he placed it on the right, he has not fulfilled the mitzvah, even after the fact. (Acharonim.)

(2) 'On the raised muscle' — this is the spot the Sages call the 'kibboret' (the biceps), and it is indispensable, as the Gemara derives it from a verse.

(3) 'The elbow' — which is called in the vernacular 'elbogen.'

(4) 'On the top of the bone' — this does not mean the very top of the bone, for there the flesh is still low, and until it begins to rise it is not a place for tefillin, since it does not yet bear the name 'kibboret'; rather it means the raised part of the flesh on the bone. The Rema, in saying this, came to add nothing new except in his concluding words, 'but not on the half of the bone near the armpit' — meaning that even though there too there is still some raised flesh, one may not use it. The Mechaber holds this way too, that only from the middle of the bone and below is valid, as is proven from se'if 7. And what the Mechaber wrote at the outset, 'on the raised flesh of the bone,' must likewise mean from the middle of the bone and below. The Vilna Gaon in his commentary agreed, as a matter of law, that the entire area of the kibboret is fit for placing tefillin, and so it is implied in the Perishah; in any case, below the kibboret it is invalid according to all. Therefore it is proper to avoid using oversized tefillin, for with large tefillin it commonly happens that the lower edge of the box comes to rest below the kibboret, unless he binds them from the outset on the upper half of the bone. Yet even this is not a fitting leniency at the outset, since the Mechaber and the Rema hold strictly on the matter. However, if he has only large tefillin, it is better that he bind them on the upper half of the bone, at a spot where raised flesh is still found, for thereby he at least satisfies the Vilna Gaon and like-minded authorities, rather than have them rest below the kibboret, which would not be valid according to all, and the blessing too would be in vain.

(5) 'One who has no hand' — this means his left hand was removed along with the entire forearm up to the elbow (the 'elbogen'); but if some of the forearm remains, even the Or Zarua concedes to Tosafot that he is obligated in tefillin and recites the blessing as well. So I found in the Or Zarua, whose light we have lately been privileged to have.

(6) 'Without a blessing' — see the Biur Halacha. And if he has no left hand at all, or even if the tip of the upper arm above the kibboret remains but he has no kibboret area whatsoever, he is exempt from the hand-tefillin even on the right; and some are stringent in this. All this is where he became an amputee on the left, which is the place for tefillin; but if he became an amputee on the right, even if his whole hand was severed, he is obligated in tefillin, and should ask others to put them on him.

(7) 'The proper custom' — see the Vilna Gaon's commentary, who wrote that this is the law of the Gemara according to the Geonim's interpretation.

(8) 'That the yod...' — see the Biur Halacha, where we wrote that it is proper to be careful not to widen too much the loop of the knot through which the strap passes, so that the point where the strap is tightened will also be close to the tefillin, on the side toward the heart.

(9) 'Beside it...' — this does not mean that the box rests on top of the yod, for certainly we require the yod to be alongside the box, level with it, and not beneath it. Rather it means: since he tilts the tefillin toward the body, as stated in se'if 1, the yod, being on the body-side, is called the 'lower' one, with the box 'above' it on the upper side.

(10) 'One should take care' — in the Zohar, parashat Pinchas, great stringency is expressed on this matter. And some are stringent that even while the tefillin are in their bag one must be careful that the yod not move at all. For this reason some have the practice of tying the yod to the box with a sinew-thread; but it is fitting to abolish this, for through such tying the sinew-thread encircles the titora and interposes between the arm and the tefillin. And the Levushei Serad wrote that one should likewise abolish the custom of winding the strap at the kibboret beneath the titora, since that too is an interposition.

(11) 'From the box' — he should make a notch in the titora above and press the yod tight against the box.

(12) 'And the box...' — regarding a left-handed man who borrows tefillin from a right-handed one, or the reverse, and cannot remove the strap and reset it properly, see the Biur Halacha.

(13) 'Nothing may interpose...' — for the verse says 'on your hand,' and of the head-tefillin it says 'between your eyes' (implying direct contact).

(14) 'Something interposing' — even the slightest interposition disqualifies. It is proper to be careful at the outset, even about a live louse, that nothing separate the tefillin from the flesh, and in any case one must be careful about a dead louse or dirt. Therefore some have the custom to wash the place where the tefillin are worn. The sefer Ravid HaZahav wrote that it seems a strap that at times comes between the tefillin and the flesh is not deemed an interposition, since a substance does not interpose against its own kind. But from the Levushei Serad, which I cited above in se'if katan 10, it is implied that it is proper to be strict about this at the outset.

(15) 'Whether the head-tefillin' — the sefer Machatzit HaShekel wrote: the practice of those men who grow long forelocks is distressing to me, quite apart from its being a way of haughtiness and pride. See what is written in Yoreh De'ah, siman 176; there is a prohibition involved in putting tefillin over them, for since they are very long, one cannot say of them 'this is their natural growth,' and so they interpose. See there. And even apart from the interposition, because of all that abundant hair it is impossible to fix the tefillin so that they are tight and resting in their proper place as required.

(16) 'One need not be particular' — the Acharonim wrote that one may be lenient only regarding the windings, but for whatever pertains to the actual binding one must be strict, even with the straps, both of the hand and of the head. And they wrote open rebuke against those who put tefillin over a wig (called a 'peruke'), even if only the strap rests upon the wig. Nevertheless, it is implied from the Magen Avraham and the Chayei Adam that if one has a sore on his head, but only where the straps rest and not where the box sits, he may place the straps over the rags on the sore, or over a thin cap, and recite the blessing, even though there is an interposition under the straps, since at the place of the box there is no interposition. And likewise with the hand-tefillin: if he has a sore even where the loop of the knot goes around his hand, he may place that loop of the knot over rags and recite the blessing, but here he should be careful to cover it from above, so that 'it shall be a sign for you' is fulfilled — for you and not for others.

(17) 'Prone to head-colds' — this means he has an ache or ailment in his head, and if he were to uncover it the cold would harm him. Since he is under compulsion, he may rely on the Rashba, who holds there is no concern of interposition here, and that 'between your eyes' was stated only to define their place. And the concern of 'a sign for you and not for others' does not apply to the head-tefillin, for of them it is written, 'and all the peoples of the earth shall see that the name of Hashem is called upon you.' Even so, he must cover them because of onlookers who do not know that he is acting under compulsion.

(18) 'The head-tefillin over...' — if he has a sore on his arm at the spot where the box rests, and the sore spreads over the whole kibboret, he may place it over the bandage, if there is no other way, but he should not recite a blessing, since most authorities hold that interposition disqualifies. He should instead recite both blessings on the head-tefillin, as above in siman 26 in the Rema's gloss. But he should put another garment over the hand-tefillin to cover it, for it is written of them 'and it shall be a sign for you,' and we expound: a sign for you and not for others. This is specifically over a bandage; but to place tefillin over his shirt, some say is forbidden even where he has a sore, and even if he puts another garment over it.

(19) 'A thin cap' — but over a thick cap it is forbidden to place them, since he could not aim and confine them to the spot where an infant's skull is soft.

(20) 'He should recite only...' — he should intend that this blessing cover the head-tefillin too, for in any case many authorities hold that one recites only a single blessing on both. And see the Bach and the Olat Tamid, from whom it is implied that it is proper to take care that at least during the Shema and the Amidah there be no interposition at all.

(21) 'A left-handed person...' — see above in se'if katan 12.

(22) 'His right hand' — even one who became left-handed by later training himself so, and was not born that way, still wears them on his right; and all the more so if Heaven made him so — that is, an illness came upon his right hand and its strength was taken from it, or his right hand was severed and he must do all his work with his left — certainly his status is that of a full left-hander, and he wears them on the impaired hand. And if he recovered and became equally able with both hands, he is like everyone else.

(23) 'All his work' — the same is true even if he does merely most of his work with it.

(24) 'He wears them on his left' — and if he placed them on his right, which is everyone's left, he has not fulfilled the mitzvah, even after the fact. (Chut HaShani, siman 28.) And see the Biur Halacha.

(25) 'Ambidextrous' — this means one who does all his tasks with both hands equally well; but if it is merely easier for him with his left, even though he could do them with his right as well, that is not called ambidextrous. (So it is proven below in siman 651 in the Sha'arei Teshuvah; see there.)

(26) 'Of weaker strength' — this means that writing has no special standing over any other single kind of work, and we follow the majority of his actions; the hand that does them is called his 'left.'

(27) 'Is considered the right' — for the verse says 'and you shall bind them and you shall write them,' implying that with the very hand one writes he must bind the tefillin — onto the opposite hand. However, when he was not born so but later trained himself to write with his left while doing his other actions with his right, he wears them on what is everyone's left. And for a person who cannot write at all, all agree that we follow his other tasks: whichever hand does them is called his 'right.'

(28) 'And this is the practice' — see the Biur Halacha.

(29) 'Down to the elbow' — this means the raised flesh on the side toward the elbow, but not literally reaching the elbow itself. And if the sore has spread over all the raised flesh on the elbow-side, he may rely on the lenient view to place the tefillin on the raised flesh in the upper half of the bone. And if the sore is large and it pains him to wear the tefillin, he is exempt from the hand-tefillin, even if a valid spot remains; he wears the head-tefillin alone, as above in siman 26; see there. And see what we wrote on se'if 5 in se'if katan 18.

(30) 'Three windings' — two on the lower joint of the finger and one on the middle joint; and some say: first one on the middle joint, and then two on the lower joint. These windings should be made after donning the head-tefillin.

(31) 'Or seven' — and our custom is seven. (Acharonim.) And see the Sha'arei Teshuvah, who concludes that these seven windings should be made only on the forearm, unlike some who have the practice of making three windings on the kibboret and four on the forearm.

(32) 'One should not wind' — for 'and you shall bind them' has already been fulfilled by the strap on the ma'avarta, just as with the head-tefillin, which hangs by the strap within the ma'avarta; and since there is no mitzvah at all in the winding, one should not lay it over the titora, which has greater sanctity than the strap. As for those who don the head-tefillin before winding on the forearm, some say he may wind the strap over the box so that the hand-tefillin does not shift from its place until he dons the head-tefillin, and afterward he removes it and makes the seven windings. And one whose arm is thin, so that the tefillin slip from their place, may on that account wind around the titora to hold them firm. (Aruch HaChaim.)

(33) 'The roots of the hair' — this explains that 'between your eyes' is not meant literally, for we learn a gezeirah shavah from 'you shall not make a bald patch between your eyes,' stated regarding mourning for the dead: just as there it refers to a spot where baldness is made, which is on the head, so too here the place for tefillin begins from a place relevant to baldness — namely, from where the hair of the head begins to grow. Many stumble in this prohibition, mistakenly saying that the upper edge begins at the hairline while the main body of the tefillin rests on the forehead, and they thereby transgress a Torah prohibition, for the entire tefillin must rest in the area relevant to baldness. That is, even the lowest edge of the titora must sit at the place where the roots of the hair begin; but one should pay no heed to someone with long hair lying down to the middle of his forehead, to place the tefillin there, for the tefillin's place must begin from where the roots of the hair start on the forehead and upward. It is even better to place them a bit above this measure, since there is room on the head for two tefillin, so that they not slip down onto the forehead. Anyone who wears them on the forehead follows the practice of the Karaites and has not fulfilled the mitzvah. Every conscientious person should warn his fellows and teach them not to stumble in this, so that they not, God forbid, be among 'the sinners of Israel with their body' — for such a one is a 'skull that has not worn tefillin,' and the blessing too is in vain, since tefillin resting out of place are as though still lying in their bag. And if they slipped from their place he must restore them at once; concerning the blessing, see above in siman 25, se'if 12.

(34) 'Up to the end of the area' — this means that the edge of the tefillin's ma'avarta should not rest higher than the spot where an infant's skull is soft.

(35) 'On the nape' — which is the bottom of the skull, opposite the face, and not so low as to be level with the throat. It is good for the main part of the knot to rest above the hollow of the neck. In any case one must take care that not even part of the knot rest on a spot bare of hair, for there begins the back of the neck, which is not the 'oref' (nape). Therefore one must be careful that the strap encircling the head be snug and tight around it, and that the loop of the strap not be larger than the circumference of the head, for then there are two drawbacks. First, real tightening is required, for we need 'and you shall bind them for a sign,' and this tightening is the true fastening. Second, if they are loose around his head, the box will slip forward onto his forehead, or the knot will fall backward down onto his neck, and they will not be in their proper place.

(36) 'That it be centered' — centered across the width of the head, not leaning to one side, so that 'they shall be for frontlets between your eyes' is fulfilled. Many Acharonim wrote that if he deviated in this he has not fulfilled the mitzvah of tefillin, so one must be careful about it. It is also proper to take care at the outset that the tefillin not be overly large, for then it is nearly impossible for them to be both tight on the head and resting in their proper place; for if they rest high on the head as required they are not tight, and the knot too will not come to its proper place. And see above in siman 32, se'if 41, what is written there.

(37) 'That appears like a dalet' — for two straps come out from the knot downward: the one emerging on the wearer's left runs sideways, like the roof of the dalet, and the one emerging on the right runs lengthwise downward, like the leg of the dalet. (Eliyah Rabbah.) One should see that the knot does not turn over, both when making it and when wearing it. And see below in siman 32, se'if 52, what we wrote there.

(38) 'And they should not turn over' — and if they did turn over, it is a mark of piety to fast or to redeem it with charity. One need only insist against turning over the part that encircles the head and the biceps one time around; but the part he winds afterward, and likewise the part of the head-tefillin's strap that dangles in front of him, one need not insist at all that it not turn over, since it is not part of the essence of the mitzvah. Nevertheless, for the sake of beautifying the mitzvah it is fitting to turn even the non-essential part so that the black faces outward.

(39) 'Whether of the hand...' — with the hand-tefillin, which he sees as he puts it on, he can make sure that neither the knot nor the strap turns over; but with the head-tefillin, which he does not see as he places it around his head, he should feel carefully with his hand from the box outward on every side and sense whether they rest properly. (Bach.)

(40) 'To the navel' — if he added beyond this, there is no concern.

(41) 'Or above it' — see the novellae of Rabbi Akiva Eiger and the Aruch HaChaim, who conclude that the right strap should reach the navel and the left the chest. And the Tur wrote further: some say the right reaches the circumcision and the left the navel.

(42) 'The length of a barleycorn' — that is, with its husk but without its point, for it has very long points. And some say a width of the length of a wheat-grain, less than a barleycorn, suffices, and in pressing circumstances one may rely on this. The Acharonim wrote that one must be very careful at the fold where the strap is tightened, for the strap commonly creases there or splits, so that it no longer retains the required width.

(43) 'He wears them...' — because some authorities validate deficient straps and others disqualify them even after the fact, as explained in the Beit Yosef; therefore he ruled this way.

(44) 'As they are' — the Acharonim conclude that if the hand-strap falls short of the length mentioned above in se'if 8, he wears it without a blessing; and if there is enough to extend to the middle finger, the windings are not indispensable. As for the length of the head-straps, the Aruch HaChaim wrote that only if there is, beyond what encircles the head, at least two handbreadths' worth is it valid; otherwise he wears them without a blessing. And regarding the width of the straps, of the hand and of the head, he was likewise stringent: if it was only the length of a wheat-grain, he wears them without a blessing. See there. And as to whether it helps to repair the straps, see below at the end of siman 33 and in the Mishnah Berurah there.

(45) 'It is good for them to be...' — for it is written, 'and all the peoples of the earth shall see...' It is good that the knot too be exposed, but the custom is not so. (Eliyah Rabbah.) And after the fact, even if they were entirely covered, he has fulfilled the mitzvah.

(46) 'It is not respectful' — for tefillin are a mark of honor, as it is written, 'and all the peoples of the earth shall see,' and it is not proper to make oneself equal to one's teacher; therefore he should cover them with his tallit or with a hat.

(47) 'One need not be particular' — nevertheless, at the outset it is better to cover them.

(48) 'Whether they are exposed' — meaning that if his garments happen to be torn so that they show, there is no concern, but it is forbidden to place them upon the garment, as above in se'if 5.
