If a person does not wear a garment that has four corners, he is not obligated in the mitzvah of tzitzis at all. Even so, it is good and proper that every person take care to wear a small tallis (tallis katan) throughout the entire day. By wearing it constantly, he will be reminded of the mitzvos at every moment. And therefore it has five knots on each corner, corresponding to the five books of the Torah. And it has four corners, so that in whichever direction he turns he will be reminded. It is proper to wear it over one's outer clothing, so that it remains visible. At the very least, one should take care to be dressed in tzitzis at the time of prayer.

It is a mitzvah to hold the tzitzis strings in one's left hand, opposite the heart, during the recitation of the Shema. There is an allusion to this in the verse, "And these words... shall be upon your heart" — hence they are held against the heart.

It is good to gaze at the tzitzis at the moment one wraps oneself in the tallis. That is, at the time one recites the blessing over it.

Some have the practice of gazing at the tzitzis when they reach the words "and you shall see it" in the third paragraph of Shema. And to place the strings upon their eyes. This is a fine custom and expresses one's cherishing of the mitzvah. The Rema adds: Some also have the practice of kissing the tzitzis at the moment they look at them. All of this is an expression of cherishing the mitzvah. [Beis Yosef]

When one gazes at the tzitzis, he looks at the two front tzitzis. For together they have ten knots, an allusion to the Divine emanations. They also contain sixteen threads, which together with the ten knots total twenty-six, the numerical value of the Divine Name (Havayah).

Great is the punishment of one who neglects the mitzvah of tzitzis. Concerning such a person the verse says, "to grasp the corners (kanfos) of the earth," alluding to the corners on which tzitzis are placed. But one who is careful in the mitzvah of tzitzis merits to behold the presence of the Divine.

On the words "so that he will remember, etc.": An analogy for this: it is like a person who, wanting to be reminded of a certain matter, ties a knot in his belt. He does this so that the knot will bring the matter to mind. [Tur]

On the words "over the clothing": See earlier, in Siman 8 in the Mishnah Berurah, what we wrote there on this matter.

On the words "at the time of prayer": And this applies to the recitation of the Shema as well. It is stated in the Zohar, Parashas Shelach Lecha, that one who recites the Shema without tzitzis bears false testimony against himself. For he reads the paragraph of tzitzis yet does not fulfill what the verse says. The Ch"A wrote that the common people do not act properly when they pray while traveling without a large tallis (tallis gadol). For in most cases their small tallis (tallis katan) is not made according to all the halachic details required for it to be fit to recite a blessing over. And, moreover, he sleeps in it at night, which is a further problem. And see earlier, Siman 8, se'if 16, in the Mishnah Berurah.

On the words "in the left hand": It is written in the writings of the Arizal that one should grasp them between the ring finger and the little finger. And when he reaches the paragraph of tzitzis, he should take them in his right hand as well and gaze at them. They should remain in his hand until he reaches the words "trustworthy and pleasant forever." At that point he kisses the tzitzis and releases them from his hand.

On the words "upon your heart": And the heart is located on the left side of the body, which is why the tzitzis are held in the left hand. This mitzvah saves a person from sin. As it is written, "and you shall not stray... in order that you shall remember... and you shall be holy." And even though the other mitzvos do not possess this special power to save one from the evil inclination, tzitzis is superior in this regard. As is found in the incident related in Menachos (44a), "There was an incident with a certain man, etc."

On the words "when he recites the blessing": The reason to gaze is that the verse says, "and you shall see it and you shall remember." Seeing brings a person to remembrance, and remembrance brings a person to action.

On the words "upon the eyes": It is found in the name of the early authorities that whoever passes the tzitzis over his eyes when reciting the paragraph of tzitzis, is assured that he will not come to blindness. A blind person should hold the tzitzis in his hand during the Shema, even though the verse says "and you shall see it." Since the tzitzis are subject to being seen by others, he too is included in the mitzvah. But he should not pass the tzitzis over his own eyes, for in his case it appears as mockery and ridicule.

On the word "to the Havayos (Divine emanations)": This means to the sefiros, which are bound and unified one with another.

On the words "one who is careful in the mitzvah of tzitzis": It is a mitzvah to make a beautiful tallis and beautiful tzitzis. And the same applies to all mitzvos: one must perform them in a beautified manner as much as possible. As it is said, "This is my God and I will beautify Him" — beautify yourself before Him through the mitzvos. However, it is forbidden to embroider verses of the Torah onto a tallis. Nevertheless, if verses were already embroidered on it, one is permitted to recite the blessing over it. And even regarding cloths, one does not permit at the outset to embroider words of Torah upon them.
