It is permitted to enter a cemetery while one is wearing tzitzis, and this leniency is on condition that the tzitzis do not drag on the graves; but if the tzitzis are dragging on the graves it is forbidden, because of lo'eg larash — mocking the helpless dead, who can no longer perform mitzvos. When was this said, i.e. that dragging is the only concern? In their times, when it was the custom to attach tzitzis onto a garment that a person wore for his own everyday need. But as for us, who wear such a four-cornered garment with no purpose other than the mitzvah itself, it is forbidden [to enter a cemetery wearing it] even when the tzitzis are not dragging. And this ruling — that even non-dragging tzitzis are forbidden — applies specifically when the tzitzis are exposed and visible; but if they are covered, it is permitted.
There are those who have the custom to tie the two tzitzis of two adjacent corners to one another when they enter the cemetery [so the tzitzis will not show]; but they accomplish nothing at all with this arrangement of theirs.
One who enters within four amos of a corpse or of a grave — his law is the same as one who enters a cemetery.
In a place where the custom is to remove the tzitzis from the deceased's garment in the house before burial — if the pallbearers are wearing tzitzis, there is cause for concern regarding them on account of lo'eg larash.
“Mocking the helpless” — for he appears to be taunting the dead, who are no longer able to fulfill the mitzvos.
“For their own need” — for at that time it was the accepted custom that their garments were made as four-cornered garments [so the tzitzis served an everyday wearing need, not the mitzvah alone].
“They are covered” — such as when he tucks the tzitzis of the tallis gadol (ט"ג) underneath the folds of his outer clothing. And for this same reason, with a tallis katan (ט"ק) as well, which he wears beneath his garments, there is no concern of lo'eg larash, since it is covered — unless he goes about without his outer garment, in which case they too are forbidden, until he tucks them into the corners [so they are hidden]. [And from the פמ"ג it is implied that one should be stringent with a tallis gadol even when it is covered, since it is designated specifically for prayer; however, from the ב"י it does not appear so, and the דה"ח likewise wrote without qualification that when covered it is permitted.]
“With their arrangement” — for even though they tie the tzitzis one onto the other, the mitzvah of tzitzis is not thereby nullified, since this is not a permanent knot, for his intent is to untie the knot immediately upon leaving the cemetery — similar to what was written in siman 10, se'if 3. And furthermore: according to their own view, who hold that the tzitzis have become nullified by this tying, it turns out that they are wearing a garment without valid tzitzis [and thus gain nothing].
“Of a grave” — and even at the grave of a minor one should be stringent because of lo'eg larash, for perhaps it is the soul of a great person; but at the grave of a woman, who even during her lifetime was likewise exempt [from tzitzis], there is no concern of lo'eg larash.
“His law is like one who enters a cemetery” — see further on, in siman 45, in the Mishnah Berurah.
“In a place where the custom is, etc.” — and the later authorities agreed that even in a place where the custom is not to remove [the tzitzis from the deceased], there is likewise a concern of lo'eg larash, since the dead are exempt from the mitzvos [and so wearing tzitzis before them looks like mockery regardless of local custom].
“Mocking the helpless” — that is, this concern applies only if the tzitzis are exposed, as [explained] above.
