A garment that does not have four corners is exempt from tzitzis. If it has more than four corners it is obligated. And he makes four tzitzis on the four corners that are farthest from one another.
If it had four corners and he cut one of them diagonally, making it into two, it has thereby become a five-cornered garment, and it is obligated.
If he folded over the corners of his garment and tied them, or sewed them, so that it looks as though he trimmed them off and it has no corners even so it is not exempted.
A garment made of cloth whose corners are of leather is obligated. If it is of leather and its corners are of cloth, it is exempt.
If it had three corners and he made three tzitzis on them, and afterward he made it a fourth corner and made a tzitzis on it too, it is invalid, because of the rule of "you shall make" and not from what is already made.
One does not fold the garment over and place tzitzis on its corners while it is folded. The Rema adds: but he must place them on the four corners that are spread out (open). [Beis Yosef] [The Mechaber continues:] unless he sewed it up entirely, and even from one side. The Rema adds: and some say that one is obligated even without sewing, and it is good to place tzitzis on it but not to make a blessing over it. [the Rif and the Rosh and the Tur] [The Mechaber:] If he placed a tzitzis over a tzitzis: if he intended to nullify the first one, he cuts off the first and it is valid. And if he intended to add, then even if he cut off one of the two, it is invalid. The Rema adds: and some validate it in any case, and this is the main ruling. [the Tur in the name of the Rosh and Rabbeinu Yerucham, ני"ח ח"ג] And before he cut from the first one it is invalid in any case. [ב"י]
Garments that are open at the sides at the bottom and have four corners at the lower part, while at the top they are closed: if the greater part is closed, it is exempt. And if the greater part is open, it is obligated. And if half of it is closed and half is open, we treat it stringently, and it is obligated in tzitzis. But one may not go out with it on Shabbos.
A cape (קאפ"ה) that is open in such a way that it has four corners: if one fastens onto it a string-fastener (אשטרינג"ה) to make it like a closed garment, in order to exempt it from tzitzis, this remedy does not help unless it is fastened from the middle of its length and downward, at the very least, and also that it be fastened below the belt, so that the closed majority will be the majority that is visible to the eye; for if not, it will be forbidden because of appearance (maris ayin).
The corners must be square, and not rounded.
A turban is exempt, even the kind of the western lands whose two ends are thrown over their shoulders and body; and even though one covers his head and the greater part of his body with it, it is exempt, since its main purpose is to cover the head, for the Torah said "your garment" and not a head-covering.
A scarf that they place on the neck in the kingdom of Eretz Yisrael, which is called in Arabic שי"ד, and likewise a ביק"א that they used to place in Spain on their shoulders - these are exempt.
Garments in Egypt called גוח"ש, and likewise מינטי"ני and דולאפאני"ש and קפטאני"ש and פידוני"ש that are in Turgema, even though they have four corners, are exempt. The Rema adds: and the same applies to the garments of the regions of the Ashkenazim and Sefardim, since their corners are not made so that there be two in front of them and two behind them aligned one opposite the other. (They are exempt.) (Beis Yosef, according to the reasoning of the Mahari"k.)
"That does not have, etc." - This applies whether from the outset of its making it lacked four corners, or whether afterward he cut one corner and made it round.
"It is exempt" - This is explained in the verse, which writes "on the four corners of your covering," and we expound in the Sifri: four, and not three; and more than four we include from "with which you cover." And we cannot say the opposite, that a five-cornered garment includes four while a three-cornered one does not include four. And it is not specifically a five-cornered garment; the same applies to one of six or seven.
"It is obligated" - But some exempt it; therefore one should not make a five-cornered garment at the outset. And the Pri Megadim wrote that according to the view of those who exempt, those small tallisos of ours that have a neck-opening are nonetheless mostly closed; however, if it happened that the majority is open, he should make in the collar (קאלנע"ר) that the tailors make it slightly rounded.
"On four" - And if he made five, he transgresses "do not add." And if he cut one of them off it is valid, provided that the four most distant corners remain with tzitzis, as [explained] further on.
"That are farthest from one another" - For it is reasonable that one should make them on those that are more distinguished than the rest. And some say that this is a Torah requirement, and one should be stringent if possible; but if he already made it on the nearer corner and it cannot be fixed, such as when the time for prayer has arrived, he may rely on those who are lenient and make a blessing.
"One diagonally" - The same applies if he cut two corners diagonally, it becomes a six-cornered garment.
"A five-cornered garment" - And likewise if it originally had three and he cut one corner into two, it becomes a four-cornered garment and is obligated in tzitzis. And the cut must be large and recognizable. And see the Pri Megadim, who wrote that this is specifically if he cut part of the cloth so that thereby that place appears as two corners; but if he did not cut anything, only a notch with a knife tore into the corner until that place split into two, it does not thereby become a four-cornered garment until the majority is open, as [explained] further on in se'if 7.
"It is not exempted" - For if he did not need the corners he would cut them off and throw them away; rather certainly he intends eventually to undo the sewing, therefore it is considered as though he already undid the sewing, and it is obligated in tzitzis. And for this reason he may now place the tzitzis on the fold even below a thumb's-knuckle from the edge, if when it is spread out it will be above the thumb's-knuckle. And all this is where he folded it and sewed it in a rounded shape; but if he folded and sewed it in a square shape, since even now there is a corner, it is the view of the Levush and the Magen Avraham that he may place the tzitzis there on the fold even though it is more than three fingerbreadths from the edge of the corner - since he sewed it it is permitted, just as in se'if 6 regarding folding the tallis, where the sewing helps. But many disagree with this and hold that here too the sewing does not help, and that case in se'if 6 is different, for it deals with folding the whole garment and that is the way it is worn, unlike here where he folded only part of the cloth.
"Of cloth, etc." - For it is written "with which you cover," and a person covers himself only with the main body of the garment, therefore we follow it; and even if the place of the cloth is entirely round and there is no corner there, only that leather corners are attached to it, it is obligated, for we follow the main body of the garment.
"Whose corners are of leather" - And the same applies if the majority of the tallis was cloth and the rest leather, it is obligated.
"Whose corners are of cloth" - And the same applies if only the majority of the tallis is of leather, even though the minority which is cloth also has the measure of a tallis, it is exempt from tzitzis, for since the main part of the garment is not of cloth, the verse "on the corners of their garments" does not apply to it. And leather is exempt even rabbinically, for it is not at all in the category of cloth. And such is the law with a tallis that has leather sewn beneath it: it is obligated; but if the upper part is of leather it is exempt, for the lower part is subordinate to the upper, which is the main body of the garment.
"Three corners" - Even if it originally had four corners with tzitzis and afterward one corner was cut and became round, even though he later fixed that corner, nevertheless these three tzitzis were automatically nullified, as is proven further on in siman 15, se'if 3, and he must untie them and tie them again.
"Three tzitzis" - It is not exactly that he made three tzitzis whose majority was made in an invalid state, that is, before it became a four-cornered garment; rather, even if he tied only a single knot with its winding and afterward completed the four corners, that knot too is invalid, and he must untie it and tie it again.
"Because of 'you shall make'" - That is to say, it is written "you shall make for yourself twisted threads on the four corners, etc.", implying that the corners should already be made four before the tzitzis are made, not that the tzitzis be made before the corners; and this is "you shall make" and not from what is already made, and they are invalid. Therefore he must untie them and tie them again; and this is specifically the three first tzitzis whose making was in an invalid state, but the tzitzis he made on the fourth corner need not be untied, since it was made properly, and the invalidity of the first ones does not invalidate it.
"That is folded" - For if it is spread out the tzitzis will be found in its middle, and we require the tzitzis to be on the corner.
"The spread-out ones" - And if he folded it because the cloth is very long, twice its height, so that he cannot wear it unless he folds it, some rule that they exempt it entirely from tzitzis, for it has no status of a garment; and the Taz and the Pri Megadim conclude that he should place tzitzis on it on the spread-out corners and not make a blessing.
"And even from one side" - See the Biur Halachah.
"That one is obligated" - to place [tzitzis] on the corners of the folded part, for as long as it is folded and not spread out, it has the status of a tallis just as it is folded.
"Not to make a blessing" - All the Acharonim were puzzled: what did he remedy by not making a blessing? For still, perhaps [the halachah is] like the Mechaber, and he must place [them] on the spread-out corners, and how may he wear this garment - more than four tzitzis is forbidden to add according to all! [and see the Pri Megadim] And they conclude for practical halachah that one should be careful at the outset not to make a folded tallis at all, unless he sewed it, and even with wide stitches, for since he sewed it it is no longer liable to become spread out; and then, whether with a squared tallis or with a tallis that was originally too long, he places tzitzis on the folded corners and makes a blessing.
"The first one" - It is possible that he stated this precisely, but if he cut off the second ones it is invalid, since he already nullified the first ones.
"In any case" - That is, whether he intended to nullify or intended to add, and whether he cut off the first ones or the second ones.
"And this is the main ruling" - And so the Acharonim ruled.
"The first ones" - He stated "the first ones" because it refers to what the Shulchan Aruch wrote earlier, "he cuts off the first ones," and to this he wrote "and before he cut the first ones"; but in truth, according to the Rosh, whom we rule like, all the more so that if he cut the second ones it is valid, as is stated in the Beis Yosef.
"Exempt" - Even if the open minority has the measure of a tallis. And if he made tzitzis on it and afterward opened its majority, they are invalid because of "you shall make" and not from what is already made, as above in se'if 5, and he must untie them and tie them again.
"If the majority is open it is obligated" - This means specifically the majority of the entire garment, and not as the tailors make a small tallis (ט"ק), that they sew it from the sides and leave a hole in it through which the arms are put, and sew below the hole and leave the majority open, and measure only from below the arms. And this is an utter error, for then it is not called a four-cornered garment, and it is close [to certain] that the one who blesses makes a blessing in vain; and in any case it is no better than a garment half of which is open, which is obligated in tzitzis, and it is forbidden to make a blessing over it, and forbidden to go out with it on Shabbos. Rather one must measure also what is above the arms, and the hole too is considered as though it is closed; and see the Biur Halachah.
"And it is obligated in tzitzis" - But one does not make a blessing over it.
"On Shabbos" - For perhaps it is exempt, and the tzitzis are then like a burden, as [explained] further on in siman 13. And see the Magen Avraham, who wrote that even to a karmelis it is forbidden, for one does not act leniently at the outset in a case of rabbinic doubt; but many of the Acharonim agree with the Eliyah Rabbah, who is lenient in this.
"A string-fastener (אשטרינג"ה)" - It is a thing that joins the sides of the garment one to another.
"To make it like a closed garment" - And therefore one should not make hooks on a small tallis (ט"ק) below its midpoint, for it would then be like closed; and this is where the ends of the hooks are bent over very much to the other side so that he cannot undo them except by an action, for in that case they are considered a complete joining, both regarding kilayim and regarding tzitzis; but otherwise it is not considered a joining thereby.
"Appearance (maris ayin)" - And [regarding] one who wears a small tallis (ט"ק) always beneath his clothes, and even when he walks in a public domain it is concealed, it may be said that maris ayin does not apply in this. [Chidushei Rabbi Akiva Eiger]
"That they be square" - For a rounded shape is not called a corner.
"Since its main purpose" - He prepared it from the outset only for the sake of covering the head.
"And not a head-covering" - And that which they make a crown (atarah) for the tallis is not because its main purpose is made for covering the head, but rather as a sign so that the upper tzitzis will not be switched to the bottom; and above in siman 8, se'if-katan 9, I wrote that the Arizal was not particular about this, and likewise the Eliyah Rabbah decides leniently if it tore at the top and the like.
"Exempt" - Even though that piece was as large as an amah or two amos and there is enough to cover the head and greater part of a child, even so they are exempt; and see the Biur Halachah.
"Even though they have, etc." - The reason - see the Beis Yosef.
"Since ... are not, etc." - For behold, the Beis Yosef wrote: one should scrutinize regarding our garments that have two corners near the neck and two corners near the ground, why do we not place tzitzis on them? And he answered several answers to this, and the Darkei Moshe rejected them, and he said, this is the reason for the custom: since the mitzvah of tzitzis is at the outset that he place two in front of him and two behind him, and our garments have all four corners in front of him and cannot be worn in any other way, they are not obligated in tzitzis; and this is what he wrote, "since their corners are not made, etc." And a garment they call a רא"ק, which has attached at the top a squared piece of cloth resting on his shoulders behind him, which they call a collar (קאלנע"ר) - it is obvious that it is exempt, for at the upper side it has no corners, only the corners of the collar resting somewhat behind him, and these are not [proper] corners, since the two corners behind him are not aligned opposite the corners in front of him. These are the words of the Darkei Moshe. And the Magen Avraham wrote: since this law is shaky in the hands of the Geonim and they did not find a sound reason [for even on the reasoning of the Darkei Moshe there is much to raise doubt, as the Pri Megadim wrote], therefore a God-fearing person should make one corner rounded, as the Beis Yosef wrote in the name of the elders; and such is the view of the Pri Megadim and the rest of the Acharonim. And especially in our times, with those garments that they have newly adopted to make open behind them [it is the garment called a קאפאט"ע], and it often happens that the majority is open, and according to the words of the Darkei Moshe it is obligated in tzitzis, for the two behind him are aligned opposite the two corners in front of him; therefore one who wishes to exempt himself is obligated to make there at least one of those four corners rounded, and it will be exempt from tzitzis, as above in se'if 9, and see there in the Biur Halachah; and it is even better to round off two more corners so that only three remain, for now it is a six-cornered garment.
"And two behind them" - From this wording an error has resulted for some people, who fold one part of the tallis very much until it becomes thin and does not cover at all, only the neck, their intention being that there be two tzitzis behind them, literally on their shoulders; and this is not from the choicest way, for if so there is here no covering of the body but only a covering of the head. And it is better according to the custom of the Turks, that the arm separates in the middle of the tallis in such a way that on the two sides one of the tzitzis will be in front of him and part behind him; for the sides, that are in front of him and behind him, are also called "in front of him and behind him," and therefore the separation of the arm suffices.
