When one rises to pray: if he was standing in the Diaspora (chutz la'aretz), he should turn his face toward the Land of Israel, and also direct his heart toward Jerusalem, the Temple, and the Holy of Holies. If he was standing in the Land of Israel, he should turn his face toward Jerusalem, and also direct his heart toward the Temple and the Holy of Holies. If he was standing in Jerusalem, he should turn his face toward the Temple, and also direct his heart toward the Holy of Holies. If he was standing behind the kapporet (the cover of the Ark), he should turn his face toward the kapporet.
(1) 'In the Diaspora,' etc. — This means: when one is standing in the Diaspora to the east of the Land of Israel, he should direct his face to the west, which is toward the Land of Israel; and when one is standing to the west, as in our countries, he should turn his face to the east; and so too for all the directions. This is likewise the explanation of what he writes further on: 'If he was standing in the Land of Israel, he should turn his face,' etc., 'If he was standing in Jerusalem, he should turn his face,' etc.

(3) 'And he should direct his heart,' etc. — That is to say, he should direct his heart even though it is impossible for him to turn his face toward them; and it means that he should imagine in his heart and mind as though he were standing in the Temple that is in Jerusalem, at the place of the Holy of Holies.
(4) 'Toward Jerusalem' — for it is said, 'and they pray to the Lord toward the city that You have chosen.'
(5) 'His face toward the Temple' — for it is said, 'and they pray toward this House.'
(6) 'Behind the kapporet' — that is, to the west of the Temple.
(7) 'His face toward the kapporet' — for it is said, 'and they pray toward this place,' and he should picture himself as though he were standing before the kapporet.
If one is praying toward one of the other directions (because he cannot face directly toward Jerusalem), he should at least angle his face toward the Land of Israel, if he is in the Diaspora; toward Jerusalem, if he is in the Land of Israel; and toward the Temple, if he is in Jerusalem. The Rema adds: As for us, who turn our faces to the east — this is because we live to the west of the Land of Israel, so that facing east means our faces are toward the Land of Israel (Tur and Semag). We do not position the place of the Ark and the direction of prayer directly toward the actual sunrise, for that is the way of the heretics; rather, we orient toward the point of midday (due east) (the New Glosses on the Rif). And one who wishes to fulfill the saying of the Sages, 'One who wishes to become wealthy should face north, and to become wise should face south,' should nevertheless angle his face toward the east.
(8) 'Toward one of the other directions' — for example, when one wishes to become wise or to become wealthy; for the Sages said, 'One who wishes to become wise should face south, and to become wealthy should face north'; or, for example, when one is riding on a donkey and cannot turn himself toward the side of the Land of Israel. In any case, he should angle his face, to fulfill what is said, 'and they pray to You toward their land.'
(9) 'As for us, who turn,' etc. — Since one must pray toward the east, the custom is to place the Ark, in which the Torah scrolls are kept, on the eastern wall. And if it is impossible to place it in the east, it should be placed in the south, but in any case not in the west, for then the Ark would be behind the people. However, even if they placed the Ark on a different wall, the one praying must still turn his face to the east.
(10) 'Our faces to the east' — If one stood facing north or south and was reminded, he may not uproot his feet to turn toward the east; rather, he should bend his face toward the east, and that suffices, even if he is praying together with others whose faces are toward the east. And if that is impossible, or if he is standing with his face to the west, he should direct his heart toward the Holy of Holies and not uproot his feet. But if he is praying in a synagogue, where the matter would become conspicuous, the Pri Megadim inclines to say that he should turn himself toward the congregation, and so ruled the Shulchan Shlomo. A synagogue in which they placed the Holy Ark toward the south, and everyone prays facing the Holy Ark, which is to the south — even though this is improper, as stated above in se'if katan 9 — nevertheless, one who comes to pray there should pray toward the side that the congregation prays, but should angle his face to the east.

(11) 'Toward the midpoint of the day' — This wording is not to be taken literally; rather, it means approximately half an hour or an hour afterward, when the sun has already moved considerably from its place. One estimates all this at the time when the equinox of Nisan or Tishrei falls, or one week before it. See the Bei'ur Halacha, where I have quoted the language of the Levush on this. See the later authorities, who all agreed with the words of the Levush: that in our countries we do not sit directly to the west of the Land of Israel, exactly, but rather also lean to its north; therefore they should set up the wall of the synagogue inclined somewhat toward the southeast of the world, for then it will stand aligned toward the Land of Israel, the Temple, and the Holy of Holies. And likewise every land, according to its location, should set up the synagogue in accordance with its bearings. In the Sefer Lechem Chamudot he justified the prevailing custom, but even so, it is implied from him too that it is better to act according to the words of the Levush. And if one happens to be in a place where the wall faces due east, he angles his face toward the southeast; see there. But if he happens to be standing and praying to the south of the Holy Land, he should not do so, for then he would appear to be turning the back of his neck, and not his face, toward the Holy Land. See there in the Lechem Chamudot. The Pri Megadim wrote that in places where they make the wall exactly toward the east, it is good to make the rabbi's place to the north of the Holy Ark, so that he can face south and become wise — for in the south one could not face south, as explained above. And in places where they build according to the Levush, it is proper to seat the rabbi to the right of the Ark; but if it would be to remove strife, he should not be particular about it.
(12) 'He should angle his face,' etc. — Rashi explained the opposite: that he should stand facing east and angle his face to the south or to the north; and such is our custom, and it is correct, so that he not differ in his stance from the congregation. The Pri Megadim wrote that in places where they build according to the Levush (the wall toward the southeast), one need not face south, since it is so in any case; and one also cannot face north, for that would appear as turning his face away from the Land of Israel.

If one was riding on a donkey, he need not dismount in order to pray, even if he has someone to hold his donkey for him; rather, he prays while continuing on his way. Likewise, if he was in a boat or on a wagon: if he is able to stand, he stands, and if not, he sits in his place and prays. Or if he was traveling on foot, he prays as he walks, even if his face is not toward Jerusalem, and even when he is not in a place of danger. For if he were to stop and stand to pray, the delay of his journey would trouble him, his mind would be distracted, and he would be unable to concentrate. It all depends on the journey, the place, his fear, and his peace of mind. Some are stringent to stand for the blessing of Avot (the first blessing), and it is proper to be concerned for their words when he is not in a place of danger.

(17) 'To stand for Avot' — for in the blessing of Avot the intent (kavanah) is indispensable, as is stated below in siman 101, and while walking one cannot concentrate as well. Likewise, one who is riding on the animal should halt it until the completion of the blessing of Avot, but he need not dismount from it.

If one was sitting in a boat or a wagon: if he is able to stand at the points where one bows, he stands, so that he may bow from a standing position and take the three steps (at the end of the Amidah). The Rema adds: Even though he sits for the entire prayer, nevertheless, if it is possible for him to stand, he should stand in order to perform the bowings and the steps in their proper manner (Beit Yosef in the name of Sefer Chasidim). And if it is impossible for him, such as when he is riding on an animal, he should move the animal three steps backward, and it counts for him as though he took the steps himself (the New Glosses on the Rif, end of the chapter Tefillat HaShachar).

(21) 'He should meditate it in his heart' — It is possible that with this he fulfills his obligation after the fact, and need not go back and pray, even if he recovered while the time for prayer remained, since he is presently under compulsion. See the Pri Chadash and the Pri Megadim; and see above in siman 62, se'if 4, in the Mishnah Berurah and the Bei'ur Halacha there. And if he cannot concentrate his mind, he should recite the Shema alone, if that is possible for him, since the required concentration for the Shema is only for the first verse, and he can easily concentrate.

And even though one is required to take three steps at the end of the prayer, he sits, prays, and bows.

(22) 'Not to lean,' etc. — The reason is that prayer requires standing, as stated below in siman 98, and standing that is achieved by leaning is not considered standing. According to this, slight leaning — that is, when he leans partially, such that if that object were removed he would not fall — is permitted. But some say the reason is that prayer must be with a sense of awe, and according to this it is forbidden in all cases. In a pressing situation one may be lenient in accordance with the first reason. See below in siman 141, se'if 1, and in what I wrote there.

One who was compelled to pray while sitting must, when he is able, go back and pray again standing, and he need not add anything new to it. The Rema adds: One who is traveling on the road and is near an inn: if he can step off the road to a place where passersby will not interrupt him, he should step aside there, and not pray in a non-Jew's inn, so that the members of the household will not confuse him. But if he is unable to step off the road to a place where he will not be interrupted, he should pray in the inn, in some corner (Terumat HaDeshen, siman 6; Beit Yosef, siman 90).

(27) 'And he need not,' etc. — That is to say, this is not like one who prays as a voluntary prayer, regarding which we hold below in siman 107 that he must add something new to it. As for the law, the later authorities agreed that he need not go back and pray a second time; and such is the custom, that travelers who prayed on the road while sitting do not go back and pray a second time. Nevertheless, if he wishes, he may pray a second time as a voluntary prayer, if he is confident that he will concentrate his heart in his prayer, as I wrote at the end of siman 107, and he need not add anything new to it, for the fact that he is now praying while standing is itself like a novelty — so wrote the Sefer Magen Giborim. But from the words of the Pri Megadim it is implied that it is not worthwhile to pray a voluntary prayer nowadays.

(29) 'In a non-Jew's inn' — for it certainly contains idols and abominations, and one should not bring anything holy into it; for Moshe Rabbeinu said, 'When I go out of the city,' etc., and he did not wish to pray within Egypt because it was full of idols.
(30) 'So that the members of the household will not confuse him' — This phrase should be placed at the end, after the words 'a corner,' and it means that he should be concerned only to find a corner where they will not confuse him, but he need not be concerned about the idols, for indeed all of our prayer takes place in towns that are full of idols. And if idols are hanging there on the eastern wall, he should not pray toward that side but toward another side, even though it is not the east. And if it is impossible to step off the road, and he must pray while walking or sitting, and he also knows that in the inn he will not find a corner where they will not confuse him, it is better to pray on the road while sitting or walking, since then he can concentrate better. Nevertheless, if he is able to pray at the inn in an open field, or in a courtyard, or in a garden, that is better, and he will satisfy both concerns — he should pray standing and with concentration.
