By Torah law, the obligation of tzitzis applies only to a garment of linen (pishtim) or of the wool of ewes (sheep's wool). But garments made of the other materials are obligated in tzitzis only by Rabbinic law. And some say that all of them are obligated by Torah law, and so is the halacha. The sources cited for this second view: Tosafos on daf 39, the Rosh, the סמ"ג, and the Mordechai.

(1) On the Mechaber's 'only': As the school of R' Yishmael taught, we derive it from nega'im (leprous garments). For regarding nega'im the verse specified 'wool and linen.' So too anywhere the Torah writes 'beged' (garment), the intent is wool or linen.

(2) On the Mechaber's 'ewes': Or of rams, the males. But all the other materials — such as camel's wool, goat's-hair down, shirin (silk), rabbit's wool, and likewise kanbos (hemp) and anything of this sort — are not included in 'wool and linen,' and are obligated in tzitzis only Rabbinically. As for the wool of a rachel bas ez (a ewe born to a goat), the ב"י writes that its wool too is not considered [true] wool, and is only like the other materials. It follows automatically that with all of these, if one made tzitzis from them, each discharges the obligation only on a garment of its own kind. Sheep's wool or linen that one blended with other materials — we follow the majority: if the majority is wool or linen it is obligated by Torah law, and if not, only Rabbinically. This is specifically where he blended them, spun them, and made a garment from the mixture. But if the warp is wool or linen and the woof is of the other materials, or the reverse, it is obligated according to this view only Rabbinically, even if the majority is wool or linen — for warp alone, or woof alone, is not considered a [full] garment. As to which tzitzis to make on such a garment, see below in s"k 13, and see the Biur Halacha.

(3) On 'only Rabbinically': Even though one must recite a beracha on a Rabbinic mitzva as well, there is still a practical difference in several matters. First: it is more fitting to make a garment with which one fulfills the mitzva by Torah law. Second: if tzitzis spun lishmah got mixed up with ones not spun lishmah and he has no others, or he is in doubt whether the garment is obligated at all — if it is only Rabbinic, a Rabbinic doubt is resolved leniently. Third: if he is sitting in the congregation and one of his tzitzis tore on a weekday — if it is only Rabbinic we can invoke human dignity (kevod habrios), which overrides a Rabbinic law, and he need not remove his tallis at once; see siman 13. And there are many more practical differences; see the פמ"ג.

(4) On 'and some say that all of them, etc.': They rule like Rava; for Rava raised a difficulty: it is written 'on the tzitzis of the kanaf (corner),' implying the kind of the corner-garment. That is, even if it is not of wool or linen, the tzitzis must nonetheless be of the garment's own material. And it is [also] written, 'You shall not wear shaatnez, wool and linen together — you shall make yourself gedilim (twisted fringes) from them.' How are they reconciled? Wool and linen discharge both on their own kind and not on their own kind. The other materials discharge on their own kind, but not on kinds other than their own. The Rema decides like this view, since most of the later authorities hold like Rava to expound 'the kind of the corner.' And we learn from this that every kind of garment is obligated in tzitzis by Torah law, and [the tzitzis] must be of the garment's material.

(5) On 'and so is the halacha': A God-fearing person should be stringent upon himself to take the first view into account and make a wool tallis, so that he is obligated in tzitzis by Torah law according to all. And it is proper that he make both the tallis gadol (ט"ג) and the tallis katan (ט"ק) of wool.

Tzitzis of linen, or of sheep's wool, discharge the obligation on any type of garment. The exception is linen tzitzis on a wool garment, or wool tzitzis on a linen garment. This exception applies specifically nowadays, when we do not have techeiles. The reason is that wool and linen together are the forbidden mixture of shaatnez. The Rema adds: Some say one should not make linen tzitzis at all, even for garments of the other materials. And this is the accepted practice; the Rema cites the סמ"ק, siman 31.

(6) On 'of wool, etc.': The ב"ח writes that since there are authorities stringent here — not to make even wool tzitzis for the other materials, since it is not the garment's own kind, as explained in the ב"י — therefore one should recite a beracha only on a wool tallis with wool tzitzis. But the world is accustomed to make wool tzitzis for the other materials. And in the sefer א"ר it too is written that one may be lenient in this, and so it is implied in the sefer Maaseh Rav.

(7) On 'nowadays': That is: in the time when there was techeiles, when one had to place four threads — two threads of white and two threads of techeiles (techeiles being wool dyed with the blood of the chilazon) and through this the mitzva of tzitzis was fulfilled properly, the Torah permitted us to place the two white threads, whether of wool or of linen, whether on a wool garment or a linen garment. And according to the view the Rema cited in se'if 1, that all garments are obligated by Torah law, even on them it was then permitted to us by Torah law to have tzitzis of wool and linen together. But now that we have no techeiles, it turns out we do not fulfill the mitzva in its completeness, so shaatnez is not permitted to us.

(8) On 'even for other materials': The reason: there is wool that looks like silk, and people might place linen tzitzis on it, thinking it is silk, and it would be shaatnez. According to this, for other materials that are not silk one could permit it. But there are other reasons as well — see the ב"י, ב"ח and ט"ז — and according to them one should be stringent even for the other materials. And in pressing circumstances one may rely on those who are lenient; so wrote the א"ר. And see the sefer Maaseh Rav, that the Gra too was among the lenient in this.

Tzitzis of the other materials discharge the obligation only on a garment of their own kind. For example, silk tzitzis for a silk garment, and cotton (tzemer gefen) tzitzis for a cotton garment. But not of their own kind, they do not discharge the obligation.

(9) On 'of the other [materials], etc.': This law holds whether one holds the other materials are obligated by Torah law or only Rabbinically.

(10) On 'only of their own kind': And if the warp was of one material and the woof of another, it is obvious this garment has no remedy except with wool tzitzis, which discharge on all garments, or with linen tzitzis in a pressing situation, as above.

(11) On 'for example silk': And all this is specifically where the silk was spun and twisted for the sake of tzitzis; otherwise, no.

(12) On 'for a silk garment': Even if beneath it a lining of wool, linen, or another material was sewn, we follow the upper [layer], which is the essence of the garment, as below in siman 10, in the מ"א, s"k 5.

(13) On 'they do not discharge': A garment whose warp is of its own kind and whose woof is wool, or the reverse — he should place specifically wool tzitzis on it, which discharge on all kinds, and not tzitzis of the other materials, even if the majority was of the other materials, since warp alone or woof alone is not considered a garment, as above in s"k 1. And even where the wool threads are not distinguishable on their own — for instance, he mixed a little of the wool threads into the warp and woof and their place is not recognizable — even so it appears better to make the tzitzis from wool threads, since some say threads are significant and are not nullified. And it is better still that he make the whole tallis of wool with no admixture at all of other materials, and in this way beautify [the mitzva] on high. And a garment mixed of cotton and linen has no remedy — unless, in a pressing situation, he makes linen tzitzis on it, as above at the end of s"k 8.

If, on a garment of the other materials, one placed... ...some tzitzis threads of the garment's own kind and some of wool or linen... ...the matter is left in doubt.

(14) On 'the matter is left in doubt': Because there is here no full 'kind of the corner,' and also 'you shall make yourself gedilim from them' is not fully [satisfied]. And see the Artzos HaChaim, who writes that if one makes two threads of the garment's own kind and two threads of wool, it is fine. See there, where he gives a reasoned explanation.

Some say the tzitzis must be made of the same color as the garment. And those who are meticulous conduct themselves this way. The Rema adds: The Ashkenazim are accustomed to make the tzitzis only white... ...even on colored garments, and one should not deviate; the Rema cites ת"ה, siman 46.

(15) On 'the color of the garment': This is on account of 'This is my God and I will beautify Him' (zeh Keili v'anveihu). And some explain it is because we require in this the 'kind of the corner.'

(16) On 'even on colored garments': Nevertheless it is fitting for the meticulous person to make specifically the four corners, or the tallis katan, white, so that he fulfills all opinions when he makes the tzitzis white. Also because it is written, 'and His garment was white as snow.' And regarding the border of the garment being a techeiles-like color in our talleisim — we follow the essence of the garment.

Some say one should not make a tallis of linen, even though the halacha is not so; a God-fearing person fulfills all views and makes a tallis of sheep's wool, which is obligated in tzitzis by Torah law, without any misgiving. The Rema adds: Nevertheless, if it is possible only with a linen tallis, it is better that he make a linen tallis with linen tzitzis than that the mitzva of tzitzis be forfeited. The source is a responsum of the Rosh, klal 2.

(17) On 'of linen': For Chazal decreed [against it], since then he would be forced to make linen tzitzis on it, and there is concern he might also make techeiles on it, which would be forbidden shaatnez when he covers himself with it at night — a time when there is no fulfillment of the mitzva. And even though nowadays we have no techeiles, this view holds the decree is nevertheless not nullified. But many authorities permitted it, holding the essence of the decree was only that one not place techeiles on it so as not to come to shaatnez — but not [a decree] on the linen threads. And also, nowadays that there is no techeiles, this decree does not apply at all. And therefore the Rema wrote in his gloss that if it is impossible otherwise, one may rely on them.

(18) On 'a linen tallis': And all the more so it is permitted to make a tallis of the other materials with linen tzitzis, when he has no other tzitzis, so that the mitzva not be lost.

(19) On 'and linen tzitzis': And he may rely on those who permit, even regarding the beracha. And it is obvious that if he has a wool tallis gadol, he should recite the beracha on it and intend to exempt this one. And in the מ"א it is written — and it seems to him — that he should make corners of leather on it and place wool tzitzis on it; but the later authorities cast doubt on this.
