One should have intent (kavanah) when responding to Kaddish. The Rema adds: One should not interrupt between 'Yehei shemei rabba' and 'mevorach' [Hagahot Ashri, in the name of the א"ז, writes that according to the first interpretation one should not interrupt between 'shemei' and 'rabba,' and according to the interpretation of the Ri one should not interrupt between 'rabba' and 'mevorach'] and to answer it aloud, and to make an effort to run in order to hear Kaddish. The Rema adds: One should stand when responding to Kaddish and to any matter of sanctity (davar shebikdushah); and one who comes to the synagogue and hears the congregation responding to Kaddish answers together with them even though he did not hear the chazzan (sheliach tzibbur) say 'Yisgadal,' etc. [Hagahot Chadashim in the Mordechai of Berachot]; and the chazzan too must say 'Yehei shemei rabba.' And when he begins 'Yisgadal,' one may say: 'And now, may the strength [of the Lord] be great, etc.; Remember Your mercies, etc.'

(1) 'One should have intent' — for our Sages of blessed memory said: whoever responds 'Amen, yehei shemei rabba mevorach' with all his strength has his decreed sentence torn up. And the Rishonim explained that 'with all his strength' means with all his concentration and with all his limbs — that is, that he say it with heart and soul, and not merely mouthing it with his lips while his heart is not with him. He should also intend to hear the Kaddish from the mouth of the chazzan, so that he knows to what he is answering 'Amen, yehei shemei rabba' and the 'Amen' after 'da'amiran b'alma.' And all the more so must one be very, very careful not to talk in the middle of Kaddish or Kedushah, as it is stated in Tractate Derech Eretz, that Rabbi Chama found Eliyahu [accompanied by] several thousand camels laden with anger and wrath to repay these [who talk], and of everyone who talks in these places the verse says, 'yet you did not call upon Me, O Jacob' [cited in the Beit Yosef, siman 125]. And it is written in Sefer Chasidim: a story of a certain pious man who saw another pious man after his death, and his face was greenish; he said to him, 'Why is your face greenish?' He answered him: 'Because I used to talk while the chazzan was saying Vayechulu, and the blessing of Magen Avot, and Yisgadal.' And in Sefer Mateh Moshe, siman 411, he brought in the name of a Midrash that a certain sage appeared to his student in a dream, and the student saw that he had a blemish on his forehead; he said to him, 'Why did this happen to you?' He answered, 'Because I was not careful about talking while the chazzan was saying Kaddish.' And even to think about words of Torah (divrei Torah) is forbidden while the chazzan is saying Kaddish, because one must concentrate greatly on responding to the Kaddish [the Pri Chadash]. And there is no difference between Kaddish [recited] over Scripture (Tanach), or Aggadah, or Mishnayot [the Pri Megadim].

(2) 'The Kaddish' — the wording of the Kaddish, 'Yisgadal v'yiskadash,' was instituted based on the verse 'v'hisgadilti v'hiskadishti' ('And I will magnify Myself and sanctify Myself') stated in Ezekiel 38:23, regarding the war of Gog and Magog, for then the Name of the Holy One, blessed be He, will be magnified, as it is written, 'On that day the Lord will be One and His Name One.' One should pronounce the 'dalet' of 'yisgadal v'yiskadash' with a tzeirei, since it is Hebrew and not Aramaic [see the Beit Yosef], and not with two sheva's, as though the 'tav' and the 'gimel' were vocalized with a sheva, but rather the 'gimel' with a patach. And one should give a dagesh to the 'gimel' of 'yisgadal,' so that it not sound like 'yiskadal,' which would suggest the word 'oref' (nape) — whose Aramaic translation is 'kdal.' And one should not put too strong a dagesh on the 'bet' of 'yisborach.' And one should articulate well the 'hei' of 'v'yishalal.' 'Di v'ra' are two [separate] words. After the word 'kir'utei' one should pause slightly, for these words refer back above to 'yisgadal.' 'Ba'agala uviz'man kariv, v'imru Amen' — it is proper that the chazzan say them together as one and not interrupt between them, since the custom is that the congregation does not answer 'Amen' until the chazzan says 'Amen.' If the chazzan draws out the melody of 'v'imru Amen' at great length, they need not wait for him before answering the 'Amen.' When the one responding says 'Amen, yehei shemei rabba,' he should pause slightly between 'Amen' and 'yehei shemei rabba,' and similarly between 'Amen' and 'Modim,' for the word 'Amen' is a response to the chazzan, whereas 'yehei shemei rabba' is a statement in its own right. 'Yehei shemei rabba,' etc., is the Aramaic translation of 'May His great Name be blessed forever and to all eternity' [the Beit Yosef, and according to the interpretation of the Ri]. 'Shemei' — without a yod, and also without a mapik in the 'hei' [the Taz]; though from the words of the Pri Megadim it appears that it is better to say it with a mapik in the 'hei.' 'Mevorach' — with a kamatz under the 'bet' and a patach under the 'reish.' 'L'alam' — with a kamatz under the 'ayin'; and 'ul'almei' — with a vav. And the chazzan too must say 'Yehei shemei rabba,' etc., quietly; and he should not say 'Amen' again, but rather begin 'Yehei shemei,' etc. Afterward he begins 'Yisborach,' etc., aloud; it contains eight expressions of praise, corresponding to the seven firmaments and the firmament that is above the heads of the Chayot (celestial beings). And at the beginning one says 'Yisgadal v'yiskadash,' which are two expressions of praise — so that there are ten expressions of praise in all, corresponding to the Ten Commandments. 'Min kol birchata' is three words; and on the days when the Kaddish is doubled with 'l'eila l'eila,' one should say only 'min kol birchata,' so that in total there will be only twenty-eight words.

(3) 'And one should not interrupt' — see the Pri Megadim and the Machatzit HaShekel: this means that one should not interrupt with silence between them, but one need not say them in a single breath.

(4) 'To mevorach' — see the Magen Avraham; and according to his words, one should also not interrupt between 'yehei shemei' and 'rabba.'

(5) 'Aloud' — for through this the concentration is aroused, and through this [raised] voice harsh decrees are nullified; nevertheless, one should not make very loud sounds, lest people mock him and he thereby cause them to sin.

(6) 'To hear Kaddish' — for responding 'Amen, yehei shemei rabba' is a very great mitzvah. 'Yehei shemei rabba' takes precedence over Kedushah and Modim; therefore, in large congregations in a courtyard where there are several minyanim, when one hears both at once he should answer 'yehei shemei rabba.' Nevertheless, if there are two synagogues before him — in one they are reaching the Kaddish that follows the Shemoneh Esrei, and in the other they are reaching the Kedushah — he should go and answer Kedushah, since there he will also hear the Kaddish that follows the Shemoneh Esrei. It is forbidden to interrupt in the middle of 'yehei shemei rabba' in order to hear Kedushah; and the reverse case requires further study [the Chayei Adam].

(7) 'One should stand' — until after he has finished 'yehei shemei rabba'; and some say that one should stand until the 'Amen' that follows 'Yisborach,' etc., 'v'imru Amen.'

(8) 'Matter, etc.' — and some say that one need not stand; rather, for any Kaddish that catches one already standing — such as after Hallel — he should not sit down until he answers 'Amen, yehei shemei rabba.' And one should be concerned for the words of those who are stringent; and one may learn a fortiori (kal vachomer) from Eglon king of Moav, who was a gentile and yet rose on his own from his throne for the word of God — all the more so we, His people. And in the [Sha'ar] HaKavanot it is stated that the Arizal's practice, for all the Kaddishim that follow the Amidah of Shacharit, Minchah, and Maariv, was to remain standing; and for the one containing 'Tiskabel' and that of the returning of the Torah scroll he would respond and afterward sit; and for the Maariv Kaddish of Shabbat, according to those who have the custom to say Kaddish before Barchu, some say too that one should stand.

(9) 'He answers with them' — even if he arrives when the response of 'Amen, yehei shemei rabba' is being concluded — that is, when they are saying 'mevorach' and the like — even so he should say 'Yehei shemei rabba,' etc., and not say 'Amen,' for 'Amen' refers to the chazzan's 'Yisgadal,' whereas 'yehei shemei rabba' is a praise in its own right. And likewise regarding Kedushah: if he arrives before they have finished, he may say it with them. And if he arrives when most of the congregation are saying 'yehei shemei rabba,' he too should say 'yehei shemei rabba' with them, provided he is then able to direct his mind in answering the 'Amen,' to reflect upon what he is answering. [So it appears to me to be the intent of the Magen Avraham in his se'if katan 5; and see the לבש"ר.]

(10) 'And when he begins' — that is to say, before he has begun; for while the chazzan is saying 'Yisgadal' one must listen and be silent, as is explained at the beginning of siman 125, that one must give ear and understand what the chazzan is saying, and also so that he will afterward know to what he is answering 'Amen.'

(11) 'And now, may [the strength] be great' — the Arizal, of blessed memory, did not want it said, and he would almost stammer over it, saying that it is not among the [proper] tikkunim (mystical rectifications). Therefore one should not say it between Yishtabach and Yotzer, nor at the Maariv Kaddish, which comes between [the blessing of] redemption and the Amidah (tefillah), nor in any place where it is forbidden to interrupt.

When the sheliach tzibbur (chazzan) says 'Yisborach,' the entire congregation answers 'Amen'; and likewise when he says 'Brich Hu'; and likewise when he says 'v'imru Amen.' But the custom is not to say 'Amen' after 'Yisborach,' nor after 'Brich Hu'; and one should not interrupt between 'Brich Hu' and 'l'eila min kol birchata,' etc.

(12) 'After Yisborach' — but after 'Yisgadal v'yiskadash shemei rabba' the custom is to answer 'Amen' [and it is astonishing that the Shulchan Aruch did not record this 'Amen,' which is stated explicitly in the Rambam and which he himself recorded in the Beit Yosef].

(13) 'After Brich Hu' — some err in that, when the chazzan says 'Brich Hu,' they too respond these words, 'Brich Hu l'eila,' and this is surely a disgrace, for it implies that He is blessed only above and not below, God forbid; rather, they should say also 'min kol birchata,' or should say only 'Brich Hu,' as is our custom.

(14) 'And one should not interrupt' — see the Sha'arei Teshuvah, who brought that from the Sefer HaKavanot the opposite is proven: that the word 'Brich Hu' is joined to the word 'd'Kudsha,' and afterward there is a slight pause, like an etnachta, and then one begins anew 'l'eila,' etc. — that is to say, may the Name of the Holy One, blessed be He, be blessed and praised above, etc.; and so the Vilna Gaon agreed in his commentary.

Those who respond only up to 'l'olmei olmaya' are mistaken, for it is forbidden to separate between 'olmaya' and 'yisborach.'

(15) 'Olmaya to yisborach' — it appears from the Beit Yosef that one should say the entire text of 'Yisborach' up to 'da'amiran b'alma' — twenty-eight words; but see the Magen Avraham, who concludes that the practice of the early authorities is the primary one — to say only up to 'Yisborach,' and from there onward to be silent and to direct one's attention to what the chazzan is saying, for one who hears is as one who responds. And in the Vilna Gaon's commentary he wrote to say only up to the word 'olmaya' alone, for here is the conclusion of the praise of 'Amen, yehei shemei rabba' and of 'Yisborach,' and beyond that begins another section, and one should not mix them together as one; and it appears that if he says them in two separate breaths it is permitted even according to the Vilna Gaon. And as for the essence of the matter, there are places that differ in their custom regarding this. In any case, if he is standing at a place where he is not permitted to interrupt, he should be careful in this to say only up to 'olmaya' [the Chayei Adam].

When the chazzan says 'Yisgadal,' one bows; and likewise at 'Yehei shemei rabba,' and likewise at 'Yisborach,' and likewise at 'Brich Hu,' and likewise at 'Amen.'

After he has finished the Kaddish, one takes three steps back, and afterward says 'Oseh shalom,' etc.
