The Rema: One recites the passage of the Tamid (the daily continual offering). Some say one also recites the Order of the Arrangement (Seder HaMa'arachah, the setup of the altar's service). along with "Master of the worlds, You commanded us, etc." (the prayer said together with the offerings). And if it is not possible to recite it together with the congregation, he may recite it at home, and then repeat just the passage of the Tamid alone together with the congregation. On this second time he should intend it merely as reading in the Torah, not as offering the sacrifice again. [Tur] On Shabbos one adds, alongside the passage of the Tamid, the verses of the Shabbos Musaf (additional) offering. But one does not do so on Rosh Chodesh or Yom Tov, because on those days one reads the Musaf verses publicly from the Torah. The Rema adds: Some say that one mentions the Musaf of Rosh Chodesh as well. And so is the custom, in order to publicize that it is Rosh Chodesh. And so it is stated later, in Siman 421. [Tur] The meticulous have the custom to sway while they read in the Torah, in the manner of the Torah, which was given amid trembling. And likewise while they pray, based on the verse "All my bones shall say: Hashem, who is like You?" [Abudraham]

(1) "The Tamid" — on the words "the Tamid" (the daily continual offering): Reciting this passage stands in place of actually bringing the Tamid offering. For our Sages received a tradition that in a time when the Beis HaMikdash (the Temple) does not stand and we are unable to bring offerings, whoever occupies himself with the offerings and with their Torah passages — Scripture regards it for him as though he had brought them. For this reason, some recite the Order of the Arrangement (Seder HaMa'arachah) as well. This is why the custom has spread in our times to recite each day the passage "Abaye would arrange the order of the service, etc." It appears clear to me that one who is able to learn should, as a mitzvah, study in the Gemara the meaning of this teaching, and likewise the matters we recite each day concerning the making of the incense (ketores), so that he will understand what he is saying. In this way the recitation will be reckoned for him in place of the actual burning of the incense. So too the sefarim have written: what the Gemara said, "whoever occupies himself with the passage of the burnt-offering, etc." — its intent is that one engages himself to understand its subject matter, not the mere pronouncing of the words alone. The Magen Avraham wrote that the passages of the offerings should be said while standing, in the manner of the offerings, whose service was performed standing. But see the Sha'arei Teshuvah, in the name of several later authorities, who dispute this. And the Pri Megadim wrote that, in any case, for the passage of the Tamid it is fitting to stand, since it is read aloud with the congregation. Also, regarding what the Be'er Heitev wrote in the name of the "Derech Chochmah," that one should be careful to say the passage of the Tamid together with the congregation and along with the chazzan (the prayer leader) — see the Sha'arei Teshuvah, who challenges this. The Pri Megadim wrote: as for what is printed in the siddurim in the text of the "Yehi Ratzon" prayer — "as though we have offered (hikravnu) the Tamid offering" — and some have the reading "hikravti" ("I have offered," in the singular) — this singular reading is not correct, because "hikravti" would refer to the individual owner who brings the offering, as in the passage of the sin-offering, whereas regarding the Tamid no individual is called its owner, since it is a communal offering. In the Tur the reading is "as though the Tamid was offered in its proper time, etc.," and this is correct. The Sha'arei Teshuvah, however, defends our reading as well.

(2) "With the congregation" — on the words "with the congregation": This refers to a place where the practice was to recite only the passage of the Tamid alone in public.

(3) "And to repeat" — on the words "and to repeat": Their custom in earlier times was to say the whole passage together, aloud. Consequently, such a person cannot simply remain silent while they recite it publicly, for his silence would make the matter conspicuous.

(4) "And he should intend" — on the words "and he should intend": See the Tur, that this is only for added assurance, so that it should not appear as though he is offering two Tamid offerings.

(6) "In order to publicize" — on the words "in order to publicize": But regarding Yom Tov there is no need to publicize it, for it is already well known from the day before. Shabbos, however — even though it too is well known — its Musaf portion is recited at the morning service, since one cannot read it publicly from the Torah, because it contains only two verses, as will be explained in Siman 283.

(5) "While they pray" — on the words "while they pray": There are halachic authorities who disagree with this, and hold that during the Shemoneh Esrei prayer itself one should not sway, and that only during Pesukei D'Zimra, the blessings of the Shema, and Torah study — even the study of the Oral Torah — is it the custom to sway. The Magen Avraham wrote: whoever acts in accordance with the one master has a valid practice, and whoever acts in accordance with the other master likewise has a valid practice (both customs are legitimate). It all depends on the nature of the individual: if he concentrates well by means of swaying, let him sway; and if not, let him remain still, provided only that he directs his heart in concentration. Some sway with an improper motion: the body stays fixed in its place while only the head turns, now to the right and now to the left, in a haughty manner — one should not act in this way.
