All four tzitzis are indispensable to one another: if even one of the four is missing, the mitzvah is not fulfilled at all. For as long as the garment does not have all four tzitzis on it, it is not fringed according to the law -- it counts as having no tzitzis whatsoever. And therefore one who goes out into a public domain (reshus ha-rabbim) wearing such a garment on Shabbos is liable to bring a sin-offering (chatas), since the tzitzis threads are then a forbidden burden rather than a permitted adornment. (See further, in Orach Chaim siman 301, se'if 38, where this is discussed.)

SK 1, on the words "to one another": All four tzitzis together constitute a single mitzvah. So if even one tzitzis is lacking, it is as though he affixed no tzitzis to the garment at all, and he has completely failed to fulfill the positive commandment of tzitzis.

SK 2, on "into a public domain": And going out into a karmelis is forbidden by rabbinic law (even though it does not carry the chatas liability of a public domain). And the same applies to all other cases of invalidity: for example, if the greater part of the garment's edge was sewn closed (so it lacks the required open corners), or if the tzitzis were made not in their proper place -- higher than three fingerbreadths from the corner, or lower than a thumb's-joint measure, and anything of that kind, or if the four-cornered garment was smaller than the minimum size stated in siman 16 (see there) -- in all these cases it is forbidden by rabbinic law to go out in them even into a karmelis. And regarding a garment that is open exactly half its length, see earlier in siman 10, in the Mishnah Berurah, se'if katan 27.

SK 3, on "is liable to a sin-offering": Because the garment is now a forbidden burden on account of the remaining tzitzis threads still attached to it. These remaining threads are not considered nullified (batel) to the garment, for tzitzis threads are significant and do not become nullified. And even if those remaining tzitzis are themselves also invalid, nevertheless, as long as some valid threads are found among them, his mind is upon them, and they are significant and not nullified. This is unless all the threads of all four tzitzis snapped and there does not remain in them even enough length to tie a loop (kedei anivah) -- for then they are nullified to the garment and are not a burden. Therefore, if this fact -- that all the threads have snapped down to less than a loop's length -- became known to him on Shabbos while he is walking in a public domain, he need not remove his tallis, since it is no longer a burden.

If the garment is properly fringed according to the law -- with all four valid tzitzis in place -- one is permitted to go out into a public domain while wearing it on Shabbos, whether it is a small tallis (tallis katan) or a large tallis (tallis gadol), since the tzitzis are then an adornment of the garment, not a burden. This applies even nowadays, when we do not have the techeiles (the blue thread) and use only the white threads, provided only that he is actually wearing it and it is not merely draped resting upon his shoulders (which would not be a normal manner of wearing it, and would make it a burden). (This is the ruling of the Ran and the Ri, in the chapter "Chavis," folio 108b.) And we establish the tallis on its presumptive status (chazakah) that it is properly fringed as required -- we assume the tzitzis remain valid as they were. Therefore one need not inspect the tzitzis before going out wearing it on Shabbos. (This is from the responsum of the Rosh, kelal 2; the responsum of the Ramban, siman 215; and the Kol Bo citing the Rambam, chapter 19 of the Laws of Shabbos.)

SK 4, on "one is permitted to go out": This is permitted even at night, which is not the time obligated in tzitzis, because the tzitzis are still an adornment for the garment (and hence not a burden). And this holds even for garments of other kinds of material -- even according to the authorities cited earlier in siman 9, se'if 1, who hold their obligation is only rabbinic -- for they are nonetheless an adornment of the garment, since in any case one is obligated in them with certainty. And this is not comparable to a garment that is half open and half closed, about which the Shulchan Aruch ruled earlier in siman 10, se'if 7, that one may not go out in it on Shabbos -- for there its obligation is only from doubt (safek, whether it even requires tzitzis at all), so the threads are not a certain adornment. [This is from the Pri Megadim and from the work abbreviated ארה"ח, against the view of the Shev Yaakov; afterward I found that the work abbreviated הע"ת also wrote plainly in accordance with them.]

SK 5, on "the techeiles": For we have an established ruling that the techeiles (blue) and the lavan (white) do not hold one another back -- each is valid on its own, so the white threads alone fulfill the mitzvah. As the verse states, "and you shall see it" (in the singular) -- implying that the seeing applies to each and every one of them individually.

SK 6, on "upon his shoulders": When merely draped on the shoulders it is not an adornment but a burden, for this is not the normal manner of wearing it on a weekday. However, if it covers the greater part of his body, that is sufficient to count as wearing it. And see further in siman 301, se'if 30, what we will write on this matter.

SK 7, on "before he goes out in it": Since he inspected them in the morning at the time he recited the blessing upon donning it, and they were found intact, it is not usual for them to snap in such a short interval -- even if he took the tallis off in the meantime. [Magen Avraham] And it is proven from this that on Shabbos too one must inspect the tzitzis in the morning, and so wrote the Bach explicitly in siman 8. But people at large are not careful about this; and see the Biur Halachah.

If it became known to him on Shabbos, while he is in a karmelis (a rabbinically defined intermediate domain), that the tallis he is wearing is invalid, he should not remove it from himself until he reaches his home, because human dignity (kevod ha-berios) is a great value -- and it overrides the rabbinic prohibition of carrying in a karmelis. The Rema adds: Even a small tallis (tallis katan) worn under his outer clothes he need not take off, and the same law applies if one of the tzitzis snapped and he would be embarrassed to sit without a tallis: he may put it on without reciting a blessing, on the strength of human dignity. (Beis Yosef, in the name of the responsum.) And this is specifically on Shabbos, when it is forbidden to make tzitzis (so he cannot remedy the invalid tallis). But on a weekday, in such a case, it is forbidden -- since then he could and should repair it. (Mordechai, first chapter, folio 91.)

SK 8, on "on Shabbos": And if he knew from yesterday that it lacked tzitzis and forgot to affix them, it appears that we likewise do not penalize him (by requiring him to remove it). And there is proof for this from further on, siman 355, se'if 3, in the Rema's gloss, in the case where they forgot and did not make an eruv -- see there. [From the novellae of Rabbi Akiva Eiger]

SK 9, on "while he is in a karmelis": A karmelis is a place where the prohibition of carrying is only rabbinic. Therefore he need not remove the tallis, for human dignity overrides a rabbinic prohibition. And although tzitzis is a positive Torah commandment, and we do not override a Torah law on account of human dignity -- nevertheless it is permitted here, because the Torah did not say "do not wear a garment without tzitzis"; rather there is only a positive commandment to affix tzitzis to it. And since he is unable to affix tzitzis on Shabbos, he is not transgressing a positive commandment by wearing it; only the rabbinic prohibition of carrying rests upon him -- and therefore it is permitted on account of human dignity, and he need not remove the tallis. But in a full public domain, where carrying is a Torah prohibition, he must remove it -- whether it is a tallis gadol or a tallis katan, and even if he will be left standing naked as a result -- for human dignity does not override a Torah prohibition such as this under any circumstances. And further on, in the Laws of Shabbos, God willing it will be explained that there is a dispute whether nowadays we have a domain with the full status of a public domain or not. And it appears that if the coil (gedil, the wound portion) is intact and the invalidity is only in the loose strands (anaf), we can combine with this leniency the view of the Ri cited earlier, who deems such a case valid -- so he need not remove it immediately, but should hurry to go to his home.

SK 10, on "invalid": That is to say: whether a corner of the tallis itself tore off, leaving it with only three corners, or whether just one of its tzitzis snapped. And even if it was already invalid at the time he left his house, since at the moment he put it on it was not yet known to him, we do not penalize him -- for human dignity is a great value. And even with our tallis gadol, which we are not accustomed to wear all day but only at the time of prayer for the sake of the mitzvah, and there is no disgrace in its removal -- even so he need not remove it, for the Rabbis did not distinguish between one type of tallis and another. But Rabbi Akiva Eiger, in his novellae, raises doubts about this.

SK 11, on "under his clothes": For the matter is not noticeable afterward -- no one would notice that he is going about without a tallis katan -- yet the act of removing it (which would require undressing in public) is a very great indignity.

SK 12, on "of the tzitzis": This means: whether he came to the synagogue and wished to don his tallis, and before putting it on he found the tzitzis invalid, and he is embarrassed to sit among the public without a tallis -- in which case he is permitted to put it on without a blessing; or whether, in the midst of wearing it, he sees that his tzitzis have snapped -- in that case too he need not remove it. [Birkei Yosef, the work abbreviated ארה"ח, and other Acharonim] And see the Acharonim, who agreed that it all depends on the feeling of the person wearing it: if he is genuinely embarrassed, he may wear it without a blessing; but if he is not embarrassed, the leniency of human dignity does not apply here.

SK 13, on "that he may put it on": And this is specifically if it became known to him only today (on Shabbos itself). But if he knew already from Erev Shabbos that the tzitzis were invalid, it is forbidden to wear it on Shabbos, for he should have repaired it the day before. However, if he forgot, there is room to be lenient. [Novellae of Rabbi Akiva Eiger]

SK 14, on "on the strength of human dignity": And this leniency applies specifically if he cannot obtain a borrowed tallis in the synagogue -- for if a valid one is available, there is no indignity in using it instead.

SK 15, on "and specifically on Shabbos": That is, because on Shabbos there is only a rabbinic prohibition (of carrying), as explained above. But on a weekday he is transgressing a Torah obligation at every moment -- the duty to "get up and act" (kum va-aseh) by placing tzitzis on it -- and a Torah matter -- even one that is merely of the passive "sit and do nothing" (shev ve-al ta'aseh) type, such as this, where he holds himself back from a mitzvah -- is not set aside on account of human dignity, except in a case of great indignity. Therefore it is forbidden to wear the tallis gadol when he sees it has no tzitzis, for to sit without a tallis the Rema holds is only in the category of a minor indignity. And likewise, if it became known to him in a public domain, while walking in a tallis gadol, that one of his tzitzis snapped, he must remove it at once -- for in our times taking off a tallis gadol in the marketplace is also only a minor indignity. However, if in the synagogue it became known to him -- after he is already wearing the tallis -- that one of its tzitzis is invalid, many of the Acharonim are lenient that he need not remove it immediately, for they hold that since he is among the public in the synagogue, removing it there is a very great indignity; rather he should hurry to go to his home, or to the vestibule in front of the synagogue, and remove it there. But the Chayei Adam is stringent in this, holding that removing a tallis gadol is only a minor indignity, since in any case it is people's normal practice to take off the tallis among the public in the synagogue regularly. Afterward I found that the Pri Megadim, in his introduction to the Laws of Tzitzis, also holds like the Chayei Adam. Therefore it is proper to adopt the counsel written in the work abbreviated ארה"ח: that he should declare the garment ownerless (hefker) -- for then he is exempt from placing tzitzis on it -- and when he reaches his home he should re-acquire ownership of it.

SK 16, on "it is forbidden": See the Magen Avraham, who concludes that the stringency the Rema states for weekdays does not refer back to what he wrote at the outset -- namely, even to a tallis katan. For with a tallis katan, if it became known to him that the tzitzis are invalid -- since it is a great indignity for him to strip it off from under his clothes, whether in the synagogue or among the public -- he need not remove it, because in a case of great indignity human dignity overrides even a Torah prohibition of the passive "sit and do nothing" type. But he must hurry to go to his home, or to the vestibule in front of the synagogue, and remove it there -- even though he is occupied with a matter of mitzvah in the synagogue -- because this is a Torah prohibition (on a weekday). But on Shabbos he need not hurry to leave the synagogue, so long as he is occupied with a mitzvah (since on Shabbos it is only a rabbinic matter). And one who notices that his fellow's tzitzis have snapped should not tell him until he comes to his home -- that is, he should call him to come to his house, and there tell him to remove it (so as not to shame him publicly). The Magen Avraham further wrote that if there are no tzitzis available in the town (so he could not repair it in any case), its weekday law is the same as its Shabbos law. And the same applies to a tallis whose obligation is only rabbinic -- such as one borrowed, after thirty days -- its weekday law is the same as its Shabbos law.
