If all the strings of the corner were severed but there remained in them enough to tie a loop of all the severed strings together it is valid. But if enough for a loop did not remain, even in a single string that was severed entirely, it is invalid. Therefore, since each of the four strings is folded into two, so that there are eight ends, if two ends were severed it is invalid, for perhaps these two ends belong to a single string that was thereby entirely severed. And according to our practice, to be careful at the time of making the tzitzis to place a mark on four of the ends, in such a way that the four marked ends always stay on one side of the knot and the other four ends on the other side — if two ends were severed from one side it is valid, for they are certainly from two different strings, and behold, from each of those strings the second end remains, which is more than enough for a loop. But according to Rabbeinu Tam we validate only if two whole strings remain — that is, four ends, each of the ends being twelve thumb-breadths long. Then we validate when the other two strings were severed, provided enough for a loop remained in them; but if three strings were severed, even though enough for a loop remained in them, they are invalid. And because of this, when three ends were cut: if he was not careful at the time of making the tzitzis that the four ends on one side of the knot be distinguishable, we are concerned that perhaps each severed end is from a different string, and it turns out that only one whole string remains here. Therefore, out of doubt, it is invalid. The Rema adds: And all the more so, if he was careful that the four ends on one side be distinguishable, and three ends were severed on that one side, it is invalid, for then certainly three strings were severed. And if they were severed on two sides it is likewise invalid, for perhaps they are three strings. (Beis Yosef in the name of Ben Chaviv.) But if only two ends were cut, we validate with enough for a loop. And the halacha follows the first opinion; however, where possible it is good to take into account the opinion of Rabbeinu Tam. The Rema adds: And we follow the practice of Rabbeinu Tam. (Agudah, siman 15.)

"But there remained in them" — meaning, in each of the severed strings there remains enough to make a loop — which is called a "Schleif" — around all the severed strings together. And if not all of them were severed, it is enough if there remains enough to make a loop around the severed ones alone, and not around all the strings.

"It is valid" — but this is only after the fact; if he untied the tzitzis, it is forbidden to place them on another garment, for that would be like making tzitzis from the outset, where the full measure is required. And this applies even if only one string was severed and its length no longer has twelve thumb-breadths.

"That was severed entirely" — meaning that in both of its ends there did not remain enough for a loop; it is invalid even though the rest of the strings were whole. And if enough for a loop remains in the two ends only by combining them together, there is doubt whether that helps. And it is implied from the A"R, and likewise from the D"H, that one should be stringent in the matter, and even if there is a doubt whether the two ends are from two strings or from one — so that there is here a double doubt: perhaps they are from two strings, and perhaps a combined remnant is effective — even so one should be stringent, because tzitzis are commonly available. And the Are"ch is lenient in such a case. And it appears that if in one of the ends there is enough to tie a loop around a single string, one may certainly rely on it.

"It is invalid" — see below in se'if 3. And according to all opinions, if one string was severed at its root — that is, at the place of its attachment to the corner — it is invalid. And the Taz wrote that therefore it is fitting for every God-fearing person, at the time of checking the tzitzis, to inspect also the very beginning of where the tzitzis emerge — that is, the place of their attachment to the corner — to see whether there is a tear there.

"Two ends" — this is specifically where enough for a loop did not remain in any one of them; but if in one of them there is enough for a loop, it is valid.

"For perhaps one string was severed, etc." — meaning, even if the two severed ends are on one side, nevertheless perhaps both of them are from a single string, since he was not careful at the time of making them.

"Two ends, etc." — the same law applies even if all the ends on one side were severed, and of the four ends on the other side there remained in each only enough for a loop — it too is valid, for according to this opinion it is disqualified only if a full string is lacking in both of its ends. And what the Mechaber wrote, "for the second end has more than enough for a loop," is not to be taken precisely. A question: tzitzis strings that were severed and which he then re-knotted — does it help that they were made whole again by knotting? And the Acharonim conclude that the law is as follows. If at the very outset, before he made the tzitzis from the strings, the strings were severed and he knotted them with a permanent knot, and afterward made tzitzis from them, it is valid, for a knot is a complete joining. And likewise after it was already made in a valid manner — that is, if one end was severed after the tzitzis were placed on the garment — even if enough for a loop did not remain in it, it helps to knot it now, and even if afterward the second end of that same string is severed, it will remain valid, since at the time of the knotting the tzitzis was valid. But if the strings became shortened in a way that the tzitzis was thereby already disqualified — such as when two ends were severed and enough for a loop did not remain, or the string was severed at the place of the hole — it does not help that he afterward went back and knotted them, for this falls under "you shall make it" and not from what is already made — made by way of something invalid. And all the more so, if the string was shorter than its required measure at the very outset, at the time of making — certainly it does not help that he afterward went back and knotted it after the winding and tying of the first segment, for this is literally a case of "you shall make it and not from what is already made," and as above in siman 11, se'if 13, concerning cutting the ends of the strings.

"And according to Rabbeinu Tam, etc." — his reasoning: two strings, which are four ends, we set in place of the techeiles, and two strings, which are four ends, we set in place of the lavan; therefore at the very least one of these two kinds must remain whole.

"If he was not careful" — this is difficult, for it is all the more invalid if he was careful, as the Rema wrote in the gloss afterward. And one may answer that he stated "was not careful" because of the latter clause, which concludes: "but if only two ends were cut, we validate with enough for a loop" — for that leniency of a loop's worth applies specifically where he was not careful. But if he was careful, then if two ends were cut from one side it is valid even if no loop's worth remained, since the second end of each string still remains; but if two were severed from the two sides and no loop's worth remained, they are invalid, for perhaps they are from one string.

"We validate with enough for a loop" — meaning, even if the remnant of a loop's worth was only in one of them, and as [explained] above in se'if katan 5.

"And the halacha, etc." — it is obvious that one is permitted to recite a blessing over them, as we explained in the Bi'ur Halacha.

In a case where one needs enough for a loop, and because the strings are thick he cannot tie them into a loop, yet were they thin there would be enough in them for a loop — it is valid. The Rema adds: And we estimate the measure using average-thickness strings. (His own words.)

"It is valid" — for they are in fact long enough for a loop; it is only because of their thickness that he cannot tie the loop.

The requirement of "enough for a loop" — according to Rashi it must remain from the anaf, the loose hanging threads; but according to Rabbeinu Yitzchak, even if the entire anaf was cut off and enough for a loop remains only from the gadil, the wound upper portion, it is valid. And the custom of the world follows Rashi; and where it is not possible, one may rely on Rabbeinu Yitzchak.

"One may rely on Rabbeinu Yitzchak" — and it is permitted to wear the garment. And above in se'if 1, where he wrote "where possible it is good to take into account the opinion of Rabbeinu Tam" — the meaning is where it is possible to find other tzitzis easily, but he need not go searching after them if they are not readily available to him, or if he would thereby miss praying with the congregation. And here, where he wrote "and where it is not possible" — that means in a place where no tzitzis are to be found at all — one may rely on Rabbeinu Yitzchak, but nevertheless he should not recite a blessing over it, and it is also forbidden to go out with it on Shabbos into a public domain. And in such a case one may, in pressing circumstances, validate even where a bit of the actual gadil was severed. [Teshuvas G"V, see there.] And know that all of this has no bearing on a string severed at the place of the hole, for there, even according to Rabbeinu Yitzchak, it is invalid by Torah law. And it is obvious that when the tzitzis become invalid he must remove the garment, and it does not help to stand still in his place so as not to walk four cubits, for the law of four cubits applies only to one who walks about in a garment without tzitzis. He should also not repair the tzitzis while the tallis is still upon him, but rather removes it and repairs it.
