The threads of the tzitzis must be spun for their sake — that is, with the express intent that they are being made for the mitzvah of tzitzis. The Rema adds: Some are stringent that even the combing of the wool must be done for its sake; but the custom is to be lenient regarding the combing. (Mordechai and Agudah, siman 23.) The maker should state at the beginning of the spinning that he is doing this for the sake of tzitzis, or he should say to the woman spinning, “Spin tzitzis for me for a tallis.” And if they were not spun for their sake, they are invalid.
(1) “The threads” — In the words of the Rambam: one who finds tzitzis-threads in the marketplace — even if they are cut to length and twisted — they are invalid, because a person will take the trouble to make threads that merely look like tzitzis, and so perhaps they were not made for the sake of tzitzis. But the Magid Mishneh disagrees, and in the Kesef Mishneh it is likewise written that the Rambam later retracted this in a responsum — thus far the words quoted by the Magen Avraham. But the Vilna Gaon, in his commentary at siman 301, writes that the law follows the Rambam as he ruled originally — see there.
(2) “Spun for their sake” — this is a Torah requirement, for it is written “you shall make yourself twisted fringes” — for the sake of your obligation.
(3) “To be lenient regarding the combing” — because what is written “you shall make” refers to the spinning and onward, since that is the essential making of the fringes. And see the Perishah, in the name of the Maharal of Prague, who agrees that at the outset one should be stringent to comb the wool for its sake.
(4) “He should state” — explicitly and aloud, not by mere thought. And even after the fact it requires further study whether mere thought is effective. See siman 32, se’if 9 and se’if 19, and the novellae of Rabbi Akiva Eiger there.
(5) “At the beginning” — and this single declaration suffices even for another day’s work, for from then on an unspecified act is presumed to be for its sake, since whoever acts does so with his original intent in mind, unless he explicitly stated afterward that he is doing it not for its sake.
(6) “The spinning” — if he spun a little and only then made the declaration, it does not help for what was already spun, because we are in doubt whether we say that his later conduct proves his intent at the start. But if at the outset he also had in mind that it be for its sake, only that he did not state it explicitly, it appears to me that there is room to be lenient in this, since it is a double doubt (sfek sfeika).
(7) “He should say to the woman” — this means only at the beginning of the spinning. And the same is true if the woman herself says she is spinning for the sake of tzitzis — it is effective, and she is believed regarding what she said, unlike a non-Jew or a deaf-mute, an incapable person, or a minor, who are not believed. An apostate out of appetite — who would not trouble himself to put tzitzis on his own garment — may spin, and is believed when he says he spun for its sake, and all the more so if he transgresses only other sins out of appetite. But an apostate to spite is a heretic toward the entire Torah, and he certainly acts on his own intent according to all opinions.
If a non-Jew spun them while a Jew stands over him and tells him to do it for its sake (lishmah) — according to the Rambam it is invalid, since the non-Jew acts on his own intent rather than the Jew’s instruction; according to the Rosh it is valid. The Rema adds: The custom is that the Jew assists a little in the spinning. As is stated later in siman 32, se’if 9, and in Yoreh De’ah siman 271 concerning tefillin and a Torah scroll. And the threads require twisting (sheziroh), and they must be twisted for their sake.
(8) “A non-Jew” — as to the spinning of a deaf-mute, an incapable person, or a minor — whether it helps when an adult Jew stands over them and teaches them to do it for its sake — see siman 460 in the Beis Yosef, where there is a dispute about this, and see the Bi’ur Halachah, where we have explained the consensus of the later authorities on this.
(9) “Stands over him” — see the Bi’ur Halachah, where we wrote that this applies only if the spinning does not go on very long; but if the spinning continues for a long time, then it appears that even according to the Rosh it does not help that he taught the non-Jew at the start of the spinning to do it for its sake, and all the more so if he interrupted the spinning and only later resumed — then certainly all agree that he acts on his own intent, and it is invalid.
(10) “Invalid” — [the Rambam] holds that a non-Jew acts on his own intent and does not heed what the Jew commands him — namely, that he do it for its sake.
(11) “According to the Rosh it is valid” — in pressing circumstances, when he has no Jew to spin it for its sake, one may rely on this; but otherwise not, for in the Vilna Gaon’s commentary it is written that the view of the Tosafos and the Mordechai is also like the Rambam.
(12) “The custom is that he assists, etc.” — all this is according to the Rosh, but according to the Rambam none of this helps. And see the later authorities, who conclude that this custom is only a preferable enhancement, but after the fact it is valid according to the Rosh even without any assistance at all, since the Jew stands over him and teaches him to do it for its sake. And if the Jew is not standing over him to instruct him, the assistance does not help according to all opinions, for we hold that “one who merely assists has no substance.”
(13) “And they require” — this refers to tzitzis threads in general, not to those spun by a non-Jew, for in that case, according to those who invalidate, it does not help even if a Jew afterward twisted them for their sake.
(14) “Twisting” — this means that after spinning he folds each thread in two and twists them together; and if he folded each thread into eight and twisted it, that too is unobjectionable. The reason for the twisting is as taught in the Sifri: “And they shall make for themselves tzitzis” — I might think one may make the tzitzis just as it is, unspun and untwisted; therefore the verse teaches “and they shall place on the tzitzis of the corner a cord of techeiles” — indicating it must be spun and twisted (that is, like the threads of the Mishkan, which were twisted; or alternatively, because a “cord” is by default twisted). I know this only of the techeiles; from where do I know it of the white threads? The Torah says: assign techeiles, assign white — just as the techeiles is spun and twisted, so too the white is spun and twisted. And see the Bi’ur Halachah.
(15) “For their sake” — because from the spinning onward everything is included in the “making,” for which we hold that it must be done for its sake. The Magen Avraham writes that it is even indispensable after the fact if they were not twisted for their sake, and so it is implied by the Vilna Gaon’s commentary. But some are lenient after the fact even without any twisting; and see the Bi’ur Halachah, where we explained that one should not rely on this. However, if the twisting was done without specific intent, there is room to be lenient after the fact, since the spinning was for its sake, and whoever acts does so with his original intent in mind.
If they came unraveled from their twist and became sixteen single strands, they are still valid, provided that enough of the twist remains to tie a loop (kedei anivah). The Rema adds: Ideally it is good to tie the threads at the bottom, as explained later in se’if 14 of this siman. (Beis Yosef in the name of the Rokeach.)
(16) “And became sixteen” — meaning that all eight threads came apart; and it stated this as the greater novelty in the opening clause. But the same is true if only two threads came apart and became four — there too we require that enough remain twisted to tie a loop (kedei anivah), for otherwise it is invalid, since it is as though two of his threads are missing from his tzitzis, which is invalid, unless he was careful at the time of making that there always be four ends on one side, as explained later at the beginning of siman 12.
(17) “Enough to tie a loop” — and although some invalidate if all the threads were severed, even if enough remains to tie a loop, as stated in siman 12, nevertheless, regarding the twisting we rely on the first opinion, since the law follows it, as he ruled there (Magen Avraham and Pri Megadim — see there). Know further that the Shulchan Aruch is speaking specifically where each thread was twisted from two strands; but if it was folded and twisted into four or eight, as is common in our times, and it unraveled into sixteen, it is valid even if not enough remains to tie a loop, since in any case the threads remain twisted from two strands. And regarding the prohibition of “do not add,” see the Bi’ur Halachah.
(18) “It is good to tie” — but some say that, on the contrary, it is better not to tie, and it is proper to be stringent not to tie if they are well twisted, since it is then uncommon for them to unravel (from the Magen Avraham in se’if katan 23, and Pri Megadim — see there).
The length of the eight threads must be no less than four thumb-breadths (gudalim), and some say twelve thumb-breadths — and so is the custom. Beyond that there is no maximum measure. The Rema adds: If one made it too long, he may shorten it, and this involves no problem of “you shall make” — and not from what is already made (ta’aseh velo min he’asui). (Mordechai, בה"ק.) One of the threads should be longer, so that the coil (gedil) can be wound with it — that is, the coil being the part of the tzitzis that is not left loose but wound around the others. The Rema adds: The aforementioned measure must be present in the tzitzis after it has been knotted, apart from the length that lies upon the corner of the garment. (A view of the Beis Yosef.)
(19) “Than four thumb-breadths” — the measure of a thumb-breadth, wherever it is mentioned, is that of an average person. and one measures it at the upper joint, at the wide part in its middle (and see the Sha’arei Teshuvah). And see the Magen Avraham and the Shach, רע"ב, who cite in the name of the Rambam that the measure of a thumb-breadth is the width of seven barleycorns set side by side snugly, which equals the length of two barleycorns set loosely.
(20) “And so is the custom” — and so the Levush ruled. Accordingly, the sellers who skimp on the length do not act properly, and it comes close to being a blessing said in vain, for although by Torah law any amount suffices, by Rabbinic law we require twelve thumb-breadths after the knotting, apart from what lies upon the corner of the garment. One should warn them about this (Pri Megadim), and see the Bi’ur Halachah.
(21) “Measure” — and the Ri was accustomed to make it longer, so that if part of it should tear, the required measure would still remain.
(22) “Shall be, etc.” — if one thread is not long enough to make all the windings with it, he may make some windings with one thread and some windings with a second thread, for in the time of the techeiles they would make some windings from the techeiles and some from the white. And one must see that all the threads retain their length of twelve thumb-breadths after the winding and knotting, as the Rema wrote, and even this long thread should retain twelve thumb-breadths after it is wound.
(23) “The coil” — he called it a “coil” with respect to what it will become, for it becomes a coil after the winding thread is wound around it, and this is what the Rema then wrote, “that is, the part, etc.,” meaning that at first it is plain and smooth, without coil or braiding, and through this winding the thread becomes a coil. (Yad Efrayim.)
(24) “After it has been knotted” — because of the knotting made in the coil it becomes shorter, so an additional finger-breadth is needed — namely thirteen thumb-breadths — apart from what lies upon the garment, and this is indispensable even after the fact. People are lenient about this, and it is fitting to protest against them.
One does not make the tzitzis from wool that gets caught on thorns when the flock lies down among them, nor from the loose hairs plucked from the animal, nor from the leftover warp-threads that the weaver leaves over at the end of the cloth. The reason is that using such inferior wool disgraces the mitzvah (bizui mitzvah).
(25) “One does not make” — and it is invalid even after the fact (Taz and Pri Megadim).
(26) “That the weaver leaves over” — one should not object that in any case there is a disqualification, since the threads were not spun for the sake of tzitzis. One may answer that it is speaking even of a case where the threads were initially spun for the sake of tzitzis and only afterward woven into cloth, and even so it is invalid because of disgrace to the mitzvah (Taz). And in the Sefer HaMaor he wrote the reason: because we require the “corner” to be of the same type as a proper corner, and these types are not fit to make cloth from, being the refuse of the wool, and no cloth is made from their like — these are his words. Accordingly, all inferior kinds of wool from which no cloth is made are invalid for tzitzis (Magen Avraham).
If he made them from stolen wool, they are invalid, for it is written “and they shall make for themselves” — implying from what is their own. The Rema adds: This applies specifically where he stole the finished threads; but if he stole wool and made it into threads, they are valid, since fashioning it into threads effects a change that acquires it, however, at the outset it is forbidden to make them this way. (Beis Yosef in the name of the Nimukei Yosef in Hilchos Tzitzis.) (And regarding the blessing, see later at the beginning of siman 649.) See what is written at the beginning of siman 15.
(27) “For themselves — from their own” — it appears obvious that the same applies if he took the tzitzis on credit, and the seller keeps coming and going demanding his money while this one refuses to pay him, for by law they are not his, as stated in Choshen Mishpat siman 190 — see there — and in any such case. Therefore, strictly speaking, he has not fulfilled his obligation with such tzitzis. And see the Bi’ur Halachah.

(28) “Specifically, etc.” — and then, even if the owners despaired of recovering the threads, it is invalid, for despair alone does not effect acquisition; and even if the threads were not twisted and he twisted them, this nevertheless does not count as a change that acquires, since their name is not thereby changed (Pri Megadim).
(29) “That he stole the threads, etc.” — see the Magen Avraham, se’if katan 10; according to his words, this gloss of the Rema disagrees with the Mechaber, who holds that the verse excludes as invalid even where he made the threads from stolen wool.
(30) “They are valid” — the Taz explains that the Rema is speaking of a case where there was also despair of the owners, and it is acquired through the despair together with the change of name — for originally it was wool and now it is threads. But the Magen Avraham writes that since the Rema stated it without qualification, it implies that he holds it valid even before despair, since it is acquired through a change of action; and so it is implied by the Vilna Gaon in his commentary, that the reason is a change of action — see there. And if he stole ready-made threads and sold them to another before despair, the second person does not fulfill his obligation with the tzitzis, for a change of domain without despair does not effect acquisition, and “and they shall make for themselves” does not apply to it (Pri Megadim). And if the owners despaired after it came into the second person’s hand, see Choshen Mishpat siman 353, se’if 3, where there are differing views on this. And if they despaired and only afterward he sold them, the second person acquires the tzitzis, and even regarding the blessing, it is implied by the Magen Avraham in siman 649, se’if katan 2, that he may recite the blessing over it, and there is no issue of “a mitzvah that comes through a transgression,” since he himself did not steal — and so the Machatzis HaShekel ruled. However, the Pri Megadim there, in the name of the Levush, is stringent in this, and also the Taz in siman 25 and the Vilna Gaon there are stringent in this.

Borrowed threads — regarding tzitzis this counts as a loan, since they are not returned in their original form, and so they are considered as his own.
(33) “Borrowed threads” — meaning: the term “borrowing” (she’eilah) implies that he will return to him the very same object, whereas the term “loan” (halva’ah) means it was given to be used up and replaced in kind. And these “borrowed threads” are presumably a loan, so “from their own” applies to them.
(34) “And they are considered as his own” — but if he lent them to him on the understanding that he return the very same ones, he should not recite a blessing over them, for one could say he lent them to him for some other work; but if he lent him ready-made tzitzis, like ours, which are twisted and cut to length, he may attach them on his tallis and recite a blessing over them, since he certainly gave them as a gift on condition to return, as stated in siman 14 regarding a tallis (Magen Avraham).

(35) “Its wool, etc.” — even though a worshipped object is forbidden only for a sacrifice, but for ordinary use it is permitted, nevertheless it is forbidden for the mitzvah of tzitzis, since — being for a sacred purpose — it is repugnant toward Heaven, because it has not changed so much: its appearance is still upon it, and it is evident that it is wool. This is unlike one who bows to planted flax, which is like a tree rooted in the ground, and once he made it into threads its original appearance has passed and gone.

(36) “Invalid” — see siman 586 in the Magen Avraham, se’if katan 6, who concludes that according to the Mechaber’s view there, this invalidation is only l’chatchilah, because it is repugnant, but after the fact he has fulfilled his obligation; and so the Vilna Gaon wrote in this siman, that regarding after the fact it is subject to a dispute.

(37) “For tzitzis” — the Olas Tamid wrote that the wool that was on it at the time of the bowing becomes forbidden, and all the more so what grew afterward; but in the Sefer Bnei Chayya he wrote the opposite, that what grew after it was worshipped is permitted. (And in the Be’er Heitev it is written that the Taz also holds this way, later in siman 649, se’if katan 5; and see there in the Eliyah Rabbah and the Pri Megadim.)

He should make a hole along the length of the tallis, not higher than three finger-breadths — meaning thumb-breadths — from the edge, (Kol Bo siman 22; Maimoni; and Hagahos Semak siman 31.) because above that point it is no longer called the “corner,” but the body of the garment, and not lower than the measure from the knuckle of the thumb to the tip of the nail, because it is stated “on the corner,” and if it were lower than a full thumb-knuckle’s measure it would be beneath the corner — off the corner itself. The Rema adds: This is measured straight, not diagonally from the corner. (Beis Yosef.)

(39) “He should make a hole” — the Beis Yosef wrote that although some say one should make two holes, like a tzeirei (the two-dot vowel), insert the tzitzis into them, and bring them out to one side, there is no need to be concerned with this, and one who comes to be stringent upon himself in such a matter is not among the stringent but among the astonishing, since it appears as arrogance — these are his words. But the Bach wrote that on a small tallis (tallis katan) one should make two holes, for in this it does not appear as arrogance, since it is not visible to all; and so it is written in the Kavanos that the Arizal, of blessed memory, practiced thus (however, in the Birkei Yosef it is written that Maharash testified that his father, the Maharchu, did not practice thus). And so the custom spread in the land of Poland; however, in the land of Hagar and in Ashkenaz they do not practice thus — and each river follows its own course.

(41) “Not higher than three” — because above that point it is not called the “corner” of the garment but the body of the garment, and the Torah wrote “on the corners of their garments.” And see the Beis Yosef, who wrote that one may measure off exactly three finger-breadths and then make the hole there, but many authorities disagree with this and hold that once it is a full three finger-breadths it is already called the body of the garment and not the corner, and therefore one should be careful that the hole begin within three finger-breadths. The Magen Avraham wrote: if he made the hole higher than three finger-breadths, then even though when he tied the tzitzis he made the threads over the garment short and the corners folded up so that it now lies below three, it is invalid, for in any case the corner contains the measure of “garment.” And likewise, if he made the hole higher than a thumb-knuckle, and through the tying the garment folded up until it is less than a thumb-knuckle, it is valid, since in any case the required measure was present in the corner.

(43) “Because it is not called a corner” — and this is indispensable even after the fact. And even if, after he had made the tzitzis on it — even just a single chulyah — he then cut at the hole so that the tzitzis should hang lower, it is nonetheless invalid, because of “you shall make” — and not from what is already made. And the same is true in the reverse case: when he attached them within a thumb-knuckle, then cut above in the garment and raised the tzitzis to above a thumb-knuckle and sewed below, or hung a patch upon the corner — this too is “you shall make and not from what is already made.” A woolen tallis that was fitted with tzitzis according to law, and there were found — in the silk selvage made at the edge of the tallis — threads of linen, so that they needed to draw the selvage out of the tallis: it is fitting to be stringent to untie the tzitzis and re-tie them.

If the hole was a full thumb-knuckle away from the corner, and some of the weft-threads then tore away so that the required measure no longer remained, it is still valid, since the measure was present at the time he attached this tzitzis to it. The Rema adds: The custom is to make a hem (imra) around the hole so that it should not tear there and become less than the measure, and likewise a hem is made at the lower edge of the garment for this same reason. (Beis Yosef in the name of the Semak and Kol Bo.) Some say that within the width of the garment there is no minimum measure, and some say that the law of the width of the garment is like the law of its length, and their words appear correct.

(50) “At the time” — for the verse states “and they shall make for themselves tzitzis on the corners of their garments” — the Torah insisted only that at the time of making they be on the corner, but not afterward. And this applies specifically to those tzitzis that were attached in a valid manner; but if he wishes to attach other tzitzis to it, which is a new act of making, it is invalid until he first sews the tear, as explained later in siman 15 — see there.

(51) “Less than the measure” — even though after the fact it is valid, it is nonetheless good to make the hem, so that onlookers should not come to say it is invalid, since not everyone is learned in the law (Beis Yosef).
(52) “Some say that within, etc.” — for they hold that the essential term “corner” applies to the lower edge along the length of the garment, not to the width of the garment. The “width” of the garment refers to the dimension in which a person is clothed along his height, from his head to his feet, and the “length” of the garment refers to the dimension in which he wraps himself, since the manner of wrapping is along the length.

If the woven selvage — called orillo — is wide, one should not attach the tzitzis in it, and if he did attach it there, it is invalid, for it is written “on the corners of their garments,” and this selvage is not considered part of the garment. But it does count toward the measure of a full thumb-knuckle and toward the distance of three finger-breadths, since the hole itself is within the garment. The Rema adds: It is good to measure the thumb-knuckle amount without the selvage, while keeping the hole within three finger-breadths including the selvage. (Beis Yosef in the name of Rashi and the Rashba.)

(54) “That is called orilleza” — this is where one leaves some warp-threads without weft, and at the end weaves them; and some have written that this is what we call in our language kraykes. And there is no difference whether the selvage is along the length of the garment or along its width.

(57) “Without the selvage” — and if the selvage is two or three finger-breadths wide, he should cut off part of it. And the same is true if warp-threads protrude without weft, or weft without warp — there is a doubt whether they count toward the measure, and therefore he should cut them off at the corners. And therefore the edge of our tallis, which is called shlak, that has no threads woven of warp and weft, he should cut off at the corners before attaching the tzitzis.

The number of tzitzis threads on each corner is four, doubled over, making eight. And if he added more than that, it is invalid. He cuts the ends of the four threads, inserts them through the corner, and doubles them over, and then they are eight.

(58) “Four, doubled over” — for we say in the Gemara: “gedil” implies two, “gedilim” implies four; that is, had it been written “gedil” (singular) it would imply two, since there is no “coil” with fewer than two; now that it is written “gedilim” (plural), it implies four. And in the time when there was techeiles, they would make two from techeiles and two from white, and nowadays white takes the place of techeiles, and one makes four long ones of white.

(60) “Invalid” — because he transgresses “do not add.” But the Vilna Gaon in his commentary agreed, as a matter of law, with the view of the Ittur cited in the Beis Yosef, who holds that there is no “do not add” in this, and that when the Gemara invalidates in this case, it is specifically where he added another kind to the threads (such as hemp threads or cotton), but with the same kind we permit adding as many as he wishes, even at the outset. And see the ארה"ח, who cited several other great early authorities who hold this way, and who therefore concludes that if he already made them and it is impossible to correct them, he may go out wearing them; but as soon as he is able to correct them, he must correct them. And where one reduces below the required number of threads, all agree it is invalid, as stated in the Beis Yosef.

He should take care to cut the ends of the threads to make them eight before he begins to wind the coils, for if he wound even a single chulyah (segment) (that is, the section of the tzitzis between one knot and the next) and tied even one knot, and only afterward cut them, it is invalid, because of “you shall make” — and not from what is already made, for he made them while they were in a disqualified state.

(64) “And tied, etc.” — this means: if he made a chulyah and also a knot after the chulyah — even just one knot — he has fulfilled his obligation by Torah law, even if he did not make the knot adjacent to the corner at all, and therefore cutting afterward would be “you shall make and not from what is already made.” But if he did not make the knot after the chulyah, then even though he made the first knot before the chulyah, the making of the tzitzis is not yet completed, for without the knot the chulyah does not hold at all, and there is no “coil” here, and therefore he may still cut the threads; but some are stringent, and at the outset it is proper to be concerned for their words. And know that when it says “one knot,” it means one of the five knots that are customarily made, but that knot was made twice, one on top of the other, as explained later, for otherwise it is not called a “knot,” since it does not hold.

There is no fixed number for the windings, only that the entire wound portion together with the knots be four thumb-breadths long, and the loose fringe (anaf) eight thumb-breadths. The Rema adds: If he made the tzitzis longer, he should see that one third of it be the coil (gedil) and two thirds the loose fringe (anaf). (Rambam, chapter 1.) The custom is to make seven windings in the first space, nine in the second, eleven in the third, and thirteen in the fourth, which all together total forty, corresponding to the numerical value of “Hashem Echad,” which is thirty-nine, and with the Name itself counted it is forty. The custom is to make a knot at the end of each thread so that it holds its twist.
(65) “For the windings” — this means the number of windings; and also the number of chulyos and knots is not indispensable by law, but is only for the sake of the choicest fulfillment of the mitzvah, for the five knots are an allusion, so that through them one will remember the five books of the Torah, and the doubling of the five knots, which comes to ten, alludes to the ten Sefiros of the Holy One, blessed be He, as stated later in siman 24; and for the reason of the chulyos, see the Beis Yosef.

(66) “Only that they be, etc.” — and as to what is stated in se’if 13, that if he wound even a single chulyah and knotted, cutting afterward disqualifies it — I will explain the root of the matter. For the Sages received a tradition that we require in the tzitzis a “coil” (gedil) — that is, that it be wound — as it is written “you shall make yourself twisted fringes (gedilim),” and that there also be in it separate, loose threads, as it is written “tzitzis,” like in “by a lock (tzitzis) of my head.” However, by Torah law there is no minimum measure for the length of the coil; rather, even if he wound only three windings and made a knot over them above — which too is a law given to Moshe at Sinai — the term “coil” is fulfilled thereby, and with this the mitzvah is already completed by Torah law. This is the reason for the words of the Shulchan Aruch there. And one may rely on this on Erev Shabbos at nightfall, when he has no time to make it in its proper form, and it is permitted to go out with it on Shabbos and to recite the blessing (and it is better that he then also make the first knot, before the chulyah, as is our custom, in order to satisfy also the view of some authorities who hold that it is this knot that the Sages intended as being of Torah law). All this is by Torah law; but by Rabbinic law one must make one third coil and two thirds loose cord, and since the length of the threads is twelve thumb-breadths, as above in se’if 4, he should make four thumb-breadths of coil — the windings — and leave eight thumb-breadths of separate threads, for such is the beauty of the tzitzis. And therefore, if he made only a single chulyah on Erev Shabbos at nightfall, he must complete it immediately after Shabbos, for otherwise he transgresses the words of the Sages — and there are those who stumble in this.
(67) “Wide, etc.” — this is at the outset; but after the fact, even if he wound most of it, it is valid, since there is in any case also loose cord here; but if he wound all of it, it is invalid.
(68) “Four thumb-breadths” — together with the knots. And in the Ra’aya Meheimna it is written that between one knot and the next there should be a space like a full thumb. The Rosh wrote that all the chulyos should be equal, for this is the beauty of the tzitzis; and accordingly, in the first space he should make the windings farther apart from one another, and then in each successive space closer together (Magen Avraham).
(69) “And two parts loose fringe” — see the explanation of the Maharshal on the Semag; and according to all it is not indispensable after the fact, as above.

(70) “And nine in the second” — but in the Kavanos it is written eight in the second, and so the later authorities agreed, for seven and eight together are the Name Kah (fifteen), and then eleven — in combination they form the Name Havayah (twenty-six) — and then thirteen equals the numerical value of “Echad”; and this spells out “Hashem Echad.” And in the tzitzis of R. Shlomo Molcho there were ten windings in the first space, then five, and so on, corresponding to the Name Havayah (Magen Avraham). And see further in the Levush and the Eliyah Rabbah concerning the windings.
(71) “At the end of each thread” — see above in se’if katan 18, what is stated there. It is good to make the threads of medium thickness, neither thick nor thin, on account of “this is my God and I will glorify Him” (Eliyah Rabbah).
Some say one must be careful to hang the tzitzis along the length of the tallis, for we require that they droop over the corner (meaning: hanging down upon the corner), whereas if it were hung along the width it would not droop over the corner, since it would hang toward the ground. Some say one should not place any piece of cloth in the holes of the tallis through which the tzitzis are inserted, and some permit it — and so the custom is.
(72) “Along the length of the tallis” — see above in se’if katan 52 what “length” is. And see the Bi’ur Halachah.
(73) “For we require, etc.” — this means both at the time of hanging and afterward: if they slipped downward he should return them to their place; and all this is at the outset, but after the fact there is no strict concern in this. However, he should at least be very careful that the tzitzis not hang diagonally over the corner-angle, because that is the practice of the Karaites, who do so, and if they are hanging that way, it is a mitzvah to return them to their proper place.
(74) “Any cloth” — for we require that the tzitzis rest upon the corner itself, and not upon something that rests upon the corner.
(75) “And some permit” — because one does this only to strengthen the garment so that it should not tear, and it is subordinate (batel) to the garment; and even a patch of leather is permitted — and so the authorities agreed.
