One may not interrupt his Shemoneh Esrei (the standing Amidah prayer). And even if a Jewish king greets him, he may not answer him. But regarding the king of a gentile nation — if he is able to shorten (his prayer), meaning that he can say the beginning of the blessing and its end before the king reaches him, then he should shorten it in this way. Or, if he is able to turn aside from the road, he should turn aside, but he should not interrupt by speaking. And if it is impossible for him (to escape the danger otherwise), he may interrupt.
(1) 'He may not interrupt' — even a mere gesture is forbidden. The exception is a crying child: he is permitted to gesture to him with his hands so that he will be quiet and not disturb him from his prayer. And if the gesturing does not help, he should distance himself from the child, but he may not speak with him. Likewise, a distinguished person who is standing in prayer, and the chazzan is waiting for him before saying Kaddish or Kedushah, and he is not pleased that they are waiting for him, and this disturbs him in his prayer — he is permitted to gesture to the chazzan to pray in his usual way. [This is from the ש"ת.]

(2) 'his prayer' — even where he stands to lose money, he may not interrupt. The ח"א writes [in klal 25, se'if 9]: One who is standing in prayer and becomes uncertain about some law of how to pray — for example, he forgot some item in the prayer — is permitted to walk from his place to a designated spot and look it up there in a book. But whether he may (verbally) ask the law requires further study, and it appears to me that it is permitted.

(4) 'Or if he is able' — it is better to shorten, when possible, than to turn aside from the road. [So write the Bach and the Eliyah Rabbah.] But the Pri Megadim writes that this requires further consideration, since it implies that walking for the sake of the prayer is not deemed an interruption.
(5) 'And if it is impossible for him, he interrupts' — that is to say, he is permitted even to initiate a greeting to him, when he estimates that without doing so he might be in danger; and all the more so he is permitted to respond to him. [So writes the Eliyah Rabbah.]

If one was praying while traveling on the road, and an animal or a wagon comes toward him, he should turn aside from the road but not interrupt (by speaking). But in any other situation he may not leave his place until he finishes his prayer, unless he is in the supplications that come after the (main) prayer.
(6) 'from the road' — that is to say, even though there is a danger that the animal and the wagon may come upon him, nevertheless, since he can save himself from this by turning aside from the road, it is forbidden to interrupt by speaking — such as telling another person to strike the animal with a stick, or to rebuke the wagon-driver not to come toward him.

(8) 'he may not leave' — one should rebuke those chazzanim who uproot themselves from their place on Yom Kippur, when they reach 'Va'anachnu kore'im' and during the Avodah (the account of the Temple service), as is stated in siman 621, se'if 4, in the gloss (of the Rema). Rather, they set up a shtender (a lectern) for him, as is customary, between him and the reader's table, and during the Avodah they remove the shtender, so that he need not uproot his feet.
(9) 'in the supplications' — for then it is permitted (to move), if the moving is for the sake of even a minor mitzvah, such as our practice with the chazzan, who immediately after the repetition of the prayer uproots his feet and sits down for Tachanun, in places where the custom is to say Tachanun while seated; and likewise he goes up to the bimah for the Torah reading, even though he has not yet reached the Kaddish with 'Tiskabel,' at which he takes the three steps. Or, like that which the Gemara says about Rabbi Akiva, that a person would leave him in one corner and find him in another corner, from his many bowings and prostrations — and this was during the supplications that follow the prayer. But for something that is not a need, a person is forbidden to move from his place until he takes the three steps. [So writes the Magen Avraham.] The ע"ת writes: after one has finished the prayer, before he has said 'Oseh Shalom,' there is no prohibition if he uproots his feet for a minor mitzvah, such as when he was honored to open the Holy Ark at the time they say 'Avinu Malkeinu,' which people consider somewhat of a mitzvah. Nevertheless, it appears that he should first say 'Yihyu leratzon...' beforehand.
Even if a snake is coiled around his heel, he may not interrupt. The Rema adds: (But he may walk to another place so that the snake will drop off his foot.) (This is from the Ri, at the beginning of the chapter 'Ein Omdin.') But for a scorpion he does interrupt, because it is more prone to cause injury. And a snake too — if he sees that it is angry and ready to strike, he interrupts.
(10) 'he may not interrupt' — that is to say, by speaking, such as telling another person to remove it. And likewise this entire se'if, and the one after it, wherever it mentions interrupting, all refer to interrupting by speech. But by walking it is permitted, for walking is not called an interruption. And this is specifically here, where it is for the need of removing the snake, even though we assume that ordinarily there will be no danger; but for something that is not a need, walking too is deemed somewhat of an interruption, as the Mechaber ruled in se'if 2.

(11) 'and ready to cause harm' — even when it is not coiled around his heel, but he merely sees it coming toward him, he interrupts. And if he is able to slip away by turning aside from the road before it reaches him, he should turn aside and not interrupt by speaking, as (explained) above in se'if 1.

If he sees an ox coming toward him, he interrupts, for one must keep his distance from a tam ox (one with no established habit of goring) [explanation: 'tam' means one that is not in the habit of causing harm] a distance of fifty cubits, and from a mu'ad ox [explanation: one that is in the habit of causing harm] as far as the eye can see. But if the oxen in that place have an established status of not causing harm, he does not interrupt.
(12) 'But if the oxen' — and a castrated ox — even if he does not know its temperament — he does not interrupt. This is specifically when it has never caused harm, but if it has caused harm even once, he interrupts, even in places where the other oxen are not in the habit of causing harm. [So write the later authorities.]
Whenever one interrupts: if he paused long enough to finish the entire prayer, he returns to the beginning. And if not, he returns to the start of the blessing in which he interrupted. And if he interrupted during the first three blessings, he returns to the beginning; and if during the last three, he returns to 'Retzeh.'
(13) 'if he paused' — even a mere silence, without any speech, and even only between one blessing and the next.
(14) 'the entire (prayer)' — even if he is standing at the end of the prayer, we measure (the pause) from the beginning of the prayer until its end.
(15) 'he returns, etc.' — and if he did not return to the beginning but only to the place where he stopped, and finished, he must return to the beginning and pray the entire prayer. [So writes the פר"ח.] But this applies (only) where it was a complete, unavoidable compulsion; but for the compulsion of bandits and the like, mentioned above, after the fact he has fulfilled his obligation, for perhaps the law follows the lenient opinion mentioned above, that this is not called (the kind of) compulsion (requiring a return to the beginning). [So writes the Magen Giborim.]
(16) 'to the beginning' — Now, according to our practice, which follows the ruling of the Rema above in siman 65 regarding the Shema, in accordance with the authorities, that one returns to the beginning only when the pause was due to compulsion — likewise in the (Shemoneh Esrei) prayer the law is the same. However, some say that in our case, where we are dealing with a scorpion, or an ox coming toward him, or where he interrupted on account of bandits and the like, this too is called an interruption due to compulsion, since at that moment he was unable to pray; it is deemed an interruption, and through it he returns to the beginning. And some say that this is not called (the relevant) compulsion, except where the interruption was because he himself was unfit for prayer, or the place was unfit — unlike another (external) compulsion. The Magen Avraham, and many other later authorities, ruled that in the (Shemoneh Esrei) prayer even another (external) compulsion is called compulsion, since some of the Rishonim hold that in the prayer, if he paused long enough to finish it entirely, he returns to the beginning even without any compulsion at all; but regarding the Shema and all other matters, it is not called compulsion except where the person or the place is unfit.
(17) 'and if not' — that is to say, that he did not pause in silence long enough to finish the entire prayer, but nevertheless he paused a great deal; for if he paused only enough to finish that one blessing, then according to all he returns only to that place alone. [So writes the Pri Megadim.] And see in the Biur Halacha what we wrote in the name of the דה"ח.
(18) 'he returns to the start' — for it holds that the (Shemoneh Esrei) prayer is more stringent in this matter than the Shema; and therefore, in the Shema or its blessings, it is enough that one who interrupted return to the place where he stopped, but here we require (returning) to the start of the blessing, because through a long pause the blessing has been spoiled. And this is specifically if the pause was in the middle of a blessing; but between one blessing and the next, after the fact it is of no concern, as long as he did not pause long enough to finish the entire prayer. And see in the Biur Halacha.
(19) 'the blessing' — See the ח"א, who writes that after the fact, if he did not return to the start of the blessing, then since he has completed the blessing he may not go back. And the Magen Giborim disagrees entirely with the ruling of the Shulchan Aruch, and writes that by the essential law, if he did not pause long enough to finish the entire prayer, it is not deemed an interruption, and he returns only to the place where he stopped. And that which Tosafos wrote, that he returns to the start of the blessing, refers to a case where he paused long enough to finish it entirely, and Tosafos holds that this (external) compulsion is not deemed (the relevant) compulsion even in the prayer. And in the commentary of the Vilna Gaon he agrees with the approach of the Rashba cited in the ב"י; see there. And it is implied from him that in all cases he returns only to the place where he stopped alone, unless he paused long enough to finish it entirely and due to compulsion — for then he returns to the beginning of the prayer.
(20) 'in the first three, etc.' — for all of these are considered as a single blessing, and therefore, even if he did not pause, he returns to the beginning of the prayer or to 'Retzeh.' But according to what I wrote in the name of the Vilna Gaon and the Magen Giborim, here too he need only return to the place where he stopped.
(21) 'he returns to the beginning' — The ח"א writes: this is specifically when he has already finished the blessing; but if he interrupted in the middle of a blessing, he returns only to the start of that blessing, for anything in the middle is not called 'returning' but rather correcting the wording.
That which we said, 'if he paused long enough to finish the entire prayer' — we measure this by an average reader (how long it would take him to recite it). If one spoke during the prayer, his law regarding returning is like the law of the interruptions stated in this siman.

(23) 'if he spoke' — and likewise, if he mentioned an occasion of other days in his prayer — such as mentioning Shabbos or a Yom Tov on a weekday, and the like — his law too is as if he had spoken. [So write the later authorities.] And this will be explained further on, at the end of siman 108, in the Mishnah Berurah; see there.

(25) 'like the law of the interruptions' — that is to say, that if he spoke a brief conversation in the middle of a blessing — even if he did not thereby pause long enough to finish that blessing — he returns to the start of the blessing; and if, through the conversation, he paused long enough to finish the entire prayer from its beginning to its end, he returns to the beginning of the prayer. And according to what we explained above in se'if katan 16, this law applies only where he spoke due to compulsion — such as by an aggressor or bandits and the like, as above. But if he spoke not under compulsion, but rather inadvertently — through some error, or because he thought it was permitted — then even if he paused long enough to finish it entirely, he does not return to the beginning but only to the start of the blessing. And if he spoke between one blessing and the next, although he transgressed by doing so, nevertheless no correction applies to it according to all; rather, immediately after the conversation he finishes his prayer. And if he spoke intentionally, this law requires great study: some say that he returns at once to the beginning of the prayer, even for a brief conversation, and some say that there is no difference between an inadvertent and an intentional speaker.

Rather, he should remain silent and concentrate on what the chazzan (prayer leader) is saying, and he is considered as one who has answered. The Rema adds: [If he was standing in prayer and they called him up to the Torah, he does not interrupt.] [This is from the Rashba, siman 185.]

But if he thought that it was permitted to interrupt, it is like an inadvertent act, and he does not return to the beginning, as above. And if they called him up to the Torah and he is standing after the Shemoneh Esrei — even if he has not yet begun 'Elokai Netzor' — he interrupts and goes up, but he should be careful to say 'Yihyu leratzon' beforehand.
