One should strengthen himself like a lion to rise in the morning for the service of his Creator, so that he himself wakes the dawn rather than letting the dawn wake him. The Rema adds: In any event one should not delay past the time when the congregation prays (Tur). The Rema adds a further teaching: 'I have set Hashem before me always' is a great principle of the Torah and among the virtues of the righteous who walk before God. For a person's sitting, movements, and dealings when he is alone at home are not like his sitting, movements, and dealings when he is before a great king; nor is his speech and free talk, spoken as he pleases while among his household and relatives, like his speech in the king's court. All the more so when a person takes to heart that the great King, the Holy One, whose glory fills the whole earth, stands over him and sees his deeds — as it says, 'Can a man hide himself in secret places that I shall not see him? says Hashem.' At once awe and submission, in fear of Hashem and shame before Him, will reach him constantly (Moreh Nevuchim, part 3, ch. 52). And he should not be embarrassed before people who mock him for serving Hashem; and even in walking modestly [in private], and when he lies down on his bed, he should know before Whom he lies. And as soon as he awakens from his sleep he should rise with alacrity to the service of his Creator, may He be blessed and exalted (Tur).
One who rises early to plead before his Creator should aim for the hours at which the watches [of the night] change, which are at the end of the first third of the night, at the end of the second third of the night, and at the end of the night. For a prayer that he prays at those hours over the Destruction and over the exile is favorably received.
It is fitting for every God-fearing person to feel distress and to be anxious over the destruction of the Holy Temple.
Explaining 'it is fitting for every etc.': the Kabbalists dwelt at great length on how great the merit of rising at chatzos (midnight) is, for it is very great. The order of conduct according to the writings of the Arizal has already been printed in the siddurim. The time of chatzos is always the exact middle of the night, in every place, even on the long nights or the short ones. It falls twelve hours after midday. The time to lament over the Destruction is better set slightly before chatzos; from chatzos onward he should engage in Torah, and at the end of the night he should request his needs. Some say 'Shomrim laboker' [the morning-watch supplications] at that point. And if it is close to sunrise, he should say the psalms alone and skip the dirges, and afterward say 'Shomrim laboker.' After the Tikkun [Chatzos], a set portion of Mishnayos comes before anything else; and if one has merited the wisdom of truth [Kabbalah], that time is especially propitious. The later authorities received a tradition that from 'shichvi' to 'kumi' — that is, from Shavuos, when we say 'shichvi' (lie down), until Tishah B'Av, when we say 'kumi' (arise) — one need not rise at night. And some say that from the fifteenth of Av until the fifteenth of Iyar one should rise. But those who conduct themselves according to Kabbalah hold that one must rise always. A group that has joined together to say Tikkun Chatzos communally should not be prevented; on the contrary, 'in the multitude of people is the King's glory.' And it is better that they say the Tikkun in the synagogue than in an adjoining room, for the synagogue is holier, and also so that they be among the first ten [to arrive]. And one must be especially, extremely careful about idle chatter while awake at night. One who cannot rise before daybreak, because he is weak by nature, or who knows of himself that if he rises at the night-watch he will fall asleep during the prayer — it is better that he sleep as much as he needs. Even so he should be very careful to rise an hour, or at least half an hour, before the beadle's call to the synagogue, so that he can prepare himself to pray with the congregation and in cleanliness.
Explaining 'that he feel distress': [he should feel distress over the Destruction,] but Torah and prayer should be [engaged in] with joy.
Explaining 'the destruction of the Holy Temple': the Shelah wrote that at every meal one should say 'Al naharos Bavel' (Psalm 137); and on Shabbos, as well as on days on which Tachanun is not said, he should say 'Shir hama'alos beshuv Hashem' (Psalm 126) etc. And the main thing is that he know what he is saying, for these matters follow the intent of the heart.
A small amount of supplication said with concentration is better than a large amount said without concentration.
Explaining 'without concentration': but if the one who says much also concentrated, then saying much is better. And if the one who says little has a constraint and cannot lengthen, or he estimates of himself that if he lengthens he will not be able to concentrate, so he says less supplication but says it with concentration — he is regarded before Hashem like one who has leisure and lengthens his supplications with concentration. About this we learned: 'Both the one who does much and the one who does little [are equal], provided he directs his heart to Heaven.' So too regarding Torah study the matter is the same, for everything depends, before Hashem, on whether one does all that is within his power to do. One who is a Torah scholar and has the mind to understand and learn may refrain from saying the many supplications and requests printed in the siddurim, and it is better that he learn in their place. A person must set himself a time to study works of mussar every single day, whether little or much, for the greater a person is than his fellow, the greater is his evil inclination. And the antidote to the evil inclination is the reproof of the sayings of Chazal.
It is good to recite the passage of the Binding [of Isaac], the passage of the manna, and the Ten Commandments, and the passages of the burnt-offering, the meal-offering, the peace-offerings, the sin-offering, and the guilt-offering. The Rema adds: Only in private is one permitted to say the Ten Commandments every day, but it is forbidden to say them in a congregation (Responsa of the Rashba, siman 184).
Explaining 'the passage of the Binding': it is said before the passages of the offerings. One may say the passage of the Binding and the passage of the manna even on Shabbos. And mere recitation is not enough; rather one should contemplate what he is saying and recognize the wonders of Hashem. So too the Gemara's statement that 'whoever says Tehillah LeDavid [Ashrei] three times a day is assured to be a son of the World to Come' is likewise [meant] in this manner [with contemplation]. And the reason for reciting all this: the passage of the Binding, in order to recall the merit of the Patriarchs each day, and also to subdue one's inclination, just as Isaac gave over his life. The passage of the manna, so that one believe that all his sustenance comes through individual Divine providence, as it is written, 'He that gathered much had nothing over, and he that gathered little had no lack,' teaching that abundant effort accomplishes nothing [on its own]. And it is stated in the Yerushalmi Berachos: whoever says the passage of the manna is assured that his sustenance will not be diminished. The Ten Commandments, so that he recall each day the standing at Mount Sinai and strengthen his faith in Hashem. And the passages of the offerings, for we say in Menachos [on] 'This is the law of the sin-offering': whoever occupies himself with the law of the sin-offering is as though he had offered a sin-offering, etc.
Explaining 'and the peace-offerings': the same applies to the passage of the thanksgiving-offering, for it too is included in the category of peace-offerings. And after the burnt-offering, peace-offerings, and thanksgiving-offering he should say the passage of the libations, for there is no [such] sacrifice without libations. But the sin-offering and guilt-offering do not require libations.
Explaining 'and the sin-offering': see the Magen Avraham, who wrote that if one knows he has become liable a sin-offering, he should say the sin-offering passage first. But from the words of the other poskim it does not appear so.
Explaining 'in a congregation': [the Ten Commandments were removed from the fixed daily prayer] because of the heretics, who would say, 'There is no Torah but this.' And especially in our times; therefore one also does not write it on the pamphlet designated for the congregation. Some wrote that it is not forbidden to say it in a congregation, only to fix it among the blessings [of the Shema] like the Shema itself; but before Baruch She'amar it is permitted even in a congregation. But we hold [that it is] forbidden in a congregation entirely. And for an individual, [it is permitted] specifically when not within the [fixed] prayer; but to fix it among the blessings is forbidden even for an individual [per the cited authorities].
The passages of the offerings should be said only by day. (And see further, siman 47, se'if 13.)
Explaining 'only by day': because the offerings are brought only by day. But the passage of the laver and the passage of the removal of the ashes he may say before daytime. And if he has no time [by day], he may say even the passages of the offerings at night. And as to whether they require standing, see siman 48 in the Mishnah Berurah, se'if katan 1. The Shelah wrote that on Shabbos and Yom Tov one should not say the 'Yehi ratzon,' since no free-will offering is brought on them; but there is no harm in reciting the passages themselves, like one who reads in the Torah. Even so, if one is a Torah scholar, it is better that he occupy himself with the weekly Torah portion of the day. A mourner should not say the passages of the offerings (because he is forbidden in Torah study).
When he finishes the passage of the burnt-offering he should say 'May it be Your will' that this be regarded and accepted as though I had offered a burnt-offering; and so too he should say after the passages of the meal-offering and the peace-offerings, since these are brought as free-will offerings.
Explaining 'brought as free-will offerings': but after the passage of the sin-offering he should not say so, because it is not brought as a free-will offering — unless he actually transgressed a sin for which one is liable a sin-offering. And the same is true of the guilt-offering. And as for the suspended guilt-offering [asham talui], we hold that it too is not brought as a free-will offering. The Acharonim wrote in the name of the Maharshal that one may say the 'Yehi ratzon' even after the sin-offering and guilt-offering, provided he says it in a conditional formulation, namely: 'May it be Your will that, if I transgressed a sin for which one is liable a sin-offering, this be reckoned as though I had offered a sin-offering'; and if not, let it be like one who reads in the Torah. And in the same manner he should say it after the passage of the guilt-offering as well. But the Magen Avraham raised a further difficulty: how can he say 'if I became liable a sin-offering'? For we hold, regarding a sin-offering, that it requires prior awareness that he sinned! Therefore the Magen Avraham concluded that regarding the sin-offering he should not say the 'Yehi ratzon' at all; only regarding a definite guilt-offering and a suspended guilt-offering may he say this conditional 'Yehi ratzon.' But if his heart smites him that he may have transgressed a sin and had awareness that he sinned and then forgot, he may say the conditional 'Yehi ratzon' after the sin-offering as well [Shaarei Teshuvah].
Together with the offerings one should recite the verse 'He shall slaughter it on the north side of the altar, before Hashem.'
Explaining 'together with the offerings': and nowadays the custom is to say it after the passage of the Tamid.
Explaining 'he shall slaughter it': for it is stated in the Midrash that whoever says this verse, the Holy One recalls the Binding of Isaac.
Some have the custom to recite the passage of the laver, and afterward the passage of the removal of the ashes, and afterward the passage of the daily continual-offering (Tamid), and afterward the passage of the altar on which the incense was burned, and the passage of the incense-spices and its preparation.
The Mishnah Berurah explains why one must rouse himself for his Creator's service: for this is the very purpose for which man was created, as the verse says, 'All that is called by My name, for My glory I created it,' etc. And even if his evil inclination entices him in winter, saying, 'How will you get up in the morning, for the cold is great?' — or entices him in summer, saying, 'How will you get up from your bed when you have not yet had your fill of sleep?' — he should overpower it and not listen to it, and reflect within himself: had he been required to stand and serve before a king of flesh and blood, how careful and eager he would be to rise early to prepare himself for his service; all the more so, by an incomparable a fortiori, before the King of kings, the Holy One, blessed be He.
Explaining 'the dawn': the Shelah wrote a mystical reason — to join day and night together through Torah or prayer, both in the morning and in the evening. And as soon as one awakens from his sleep and no longer wishes to sleep, he should wash his hands, even while still lying down. And all the more so he should not walk four cubits without washing his hands; one must be very careful in this. The holy Zohar greatly stresses how severe the punishment for this is, for by it he keeps the spirit of impurity upon himself. Nevertheless, God forbid that one transgress any prohibition on account of not having washed — such as holding back his urine because of it, or taking water that his fellow prepared for himself, unless he is certain he will immediately replace it with other water; and some stumble in this. If it happens that the water is far off and there is no one to bring it to him, some scrupulous people had the custom to walk in stretches of less than four cubits at a time. But the Shaarei Teshuvah wrote that this is not sound; it is preferable that they walk quickly, so as not to keep the evil spirit upon his hands longer. Some say that for this matter we regard the whole house as though it were four cubits, but one may rely on this only under pressing circumstances. If it happens, when he rises at night, that he has no water to wash his hands three times properly to remove the spirit of impurity, even so, God forbid that he neglect Torah study on this account until daybreak; rather he should wash a little, or clean his hands with anything that cleans, and recite the blessing and study, as the law of the Talmud and the poskim requires.
Explaining 'that the congregation prays': that is, even though the time for prayer will not yet have passed, there is still the mitzvah of praying together with the congregation. And see below, at the end of se'if katan 9.
Explaining 'the righteous': that is, one should always picture in his mind that he stands before Hashem, may He be blessed, for the Holy One's glory fills the whole earth. They wrote in the name of the Arizal that one should constantly picture the four-letter Name before his eyes vocalized as 'yirah' (awe), like this — and this is the secret of 'I have set Hashem before me always,' and it is of great benefit for [attaining] awe. Because of this, some were accustomed to make menorah-shaped figures on parchment to place in their siddurim, on which they would write 'I have set Hashem' etc., the four-letter Name and other [divine] Names; and such a figure was called a 'Shviti.' The reason is so that, out of fear of the Name, one be reminded not to engage in idle chatter during the prayer. But the Shaarei Teshuvah wrote in the name of the Tevu'at Shor that it is proper to gird oneself to abolish the custom, since most people do not guard the parchment properly, and they get scattered about in the streets, and it also often leads to the erasing of the [divine] Name. It appears, however, that regarding the large figures drawn on parchment that are fixed in the synagogue before the prayer-stand beneath a glass plate — where the above concern does not apply — there is nothing wrong with it; end of his words. But those who fix them on the prayer-stand without a glass plate should be protested, for through the candles set on the stand it often comes, God forbid, to the erasing of the Name.
Explaining 'before people': in any event he should not quarrel with them, for the trait of brazenness is very ugly and unfit to be used at all, even in the service of Hashem, since [by doing so] he would acquire brazenness as a fixed trait in his soul, [to be brazen] even where it is not in His service (Beis Yosef).
Explaining 'who mock him': similarly, if one is an ordinary person standing among great people, he should not be embarrassed before them to learn and to perform the mitzvah. But if he is able to perform the mitzvah out of their presence, that is better. However, before ordinary people who would learn from him, one could say it is better to do it in their presence, so that they learn from him to act as he does. But he should direct his heart for the sake of Heaven, and not, God forbid, to glorify himself.
Explaining 'even in walking modestly': that is to say, even when he is at home in private, his conduct too should be a walking with Hashem his God, as [the Rema] goes on to conclude.
Explaining 'with alacrity': this is not meant literally [to leap up]; rather he should wait a little and not stand up suddenly, for that is harmful to the body [Gittin 70]. It is good to say immediately upon rising: 'I thank You, living and eternal King, for You have restored my soul within me with compassion; abundant is Your faithfulness.' The word 'be'chemlah' (with compassion) should be said with a pause [an esnachta], and 'rabbah emunasecha' (abundant is Your faithfulness) without a break after it. It is drawn from the verse 'They are new every morning,' etc., for the Holy One keeps His faithfulness by restoring each morning the souls entrusted to Him. This requires no washing of the hands, even if his hands are soiled, since this formula mentions neither a [divine] Name nor an epithet. To study, however, it appears forbidden before he has washed his hands, and in any case it is forbidden before the blessing over the Torah. And see above, at the end of se'if katan 2.
